technology Sites using CAPTCHA?

For some reason, all day today, certain sites i visit on the regular (Furaffinity, Derpibooru even Equestria Daily and TVTropes) i've had to do a CAPTCHA before i could access the site. These sites have never used this before,

I know Derpi was using it to deal with a DDOS attack a few weeks ago, most likely to weed out trolls and bots. That's typically what they're for

Those things are bloody annoying.

No I don't want to find all the traffic lights. Do one and then suddenly there's another. Find all the fire hydrants! Whoops! You appear to have missed that tiny, obscure one in the blurry background. It's like having some random bastard trying to hinder you while trying to cross the road. I understand why some sites have to use them from time to time. But at the same time, I'm like "Get outta mah way!"

My translator site of choice (Yandex.Translate) has an old style captcha (the ones that a computer could probably do better than human) if you close it and open it again within a few mins

It also could be that your IP got blacklisted because your computer is infected etc. Some sites use Cloudflare or similar DDOS protection services and they would sometimes show you a CAPTCHA if they though it was likely that your traffic is part of an attack.

Please identify all the traffic lights (shows basically random traffic lights from different angles, and very low resolution)

 

Why couldn't just the "I am not a robot" check work? Did they figure out how to make the mouse move more like a human? Probably.

The other ones I hate are those 'type out the number and letters you see in the image above' ones. They always look like they've been written out by the world's angriest 5 year old in crayon. You end up squinting, trying to figure out if a character is a B? Or an 8?Or if it's the letter "O" or a zero? Or perhaps it's just some random splodge that is part of the background that resembles a really horrific acid trip.

Its actually how the google autonomous cars work - if you don't select all the stoplights fast enough, they will run the red light...

I despise captcha and it seems to be everywhere. I understand its purpose but it seems there could be a less intrusive way to keep bots, etc away. Some captchas just look as though they’re made to show off how inventive their creators can be, like making me slide a puzzle piece into a blank spot, or mark certain images not once, but sometimes three or more times! Once should be enough, and if it isn’t screw it. Let the bots or whatever do their thing. I doubt any would be desperate enough to go through all that nonsense since most regular users have given up by the third round.

Captcha doesn't even deter trolls and bots. It just creates more of an inconvenience than having any sort of benefits. Why does it even exist again if it serves almost no purpose other than obvious annoyance?
