How Much is a "Bit" Worth?

Trade between our world and theirs would be catastrophic. I mean they could give us a trainload of gems and we would supply them with enough food that they would never have to farm. This would bankrupt all of the earth ponies and ... It would just be "bad."

We wouldn't likely trade with them. We would likely steal all of their resources and valuables and then leave.

Well, according to the word of Cereal Velocity, 1000 bits is $1,499,499.99.

Using simple math, it's easy to calculate that one bit is $1,499.50. Rounded up. Whether this is proof of hyperinflation considering that a single apple would cost about $3000 or proof that technicolor ponies can run the economy better than humans is your opinion.

I was always guessing it was worth a dollar, but seeing stuff like cherries being 10 bits or something, it seems really overpriced. But then again, maybe that guy just wanted to scam his customers. We also heard Flim and Flam say "Cent" when they lost the Cider competition, so I'm still gonna say a bit is worth a dollar, even though its a coin.

I dont get it, a peach could cost 4 bits and a cherry 2. A peach is way more expensive then ONE cherry. How much is a whole BAG of cherrys?

well i used to work at the grocery store here in town and we had our bag of cherries reach 7.50 a pound!!!!!! it was rediculous so i don't think peaches are worth more than cherries right now in terms of unit pricing.

As far as we know, Equestria has just 'bits', so no cents or pence.

Cents were mentioned in Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000.

Someone says they wouldn't pay one cent for Film and Flam's Cider. They go as far as offering 2 bits for a barrel

Hmm... I would estimate a bit to be maybe half a dollar to two dollars. They are pretty vague about the actual worth of a bit in the show. Maybe in a future episode we'll get a better explanation of how bits work.

Kinda like reverse Yen. 1000 yen (I don't have the currency sign on my keyboard and don't know the command) is £8 and $12, so the 'bit' currency is similar to Yen, because is 1 small amount, and then it being worth much more in other currency, except it is reversed (this is getting kinda complicated).

If we had the opportunity to rob Equestria, we would have solved all world debt problems.

Us bronies sure are over-analyzing the amount of bits too much.

If I watch all of Season 1 to 2 I'll remember to write it down, calculate it with the prices IRL and average it.

I'll make a thread if I actually do that.

Yea, I've figured on my two weeks on the forums (I'm a veteran, huh?) that me and lots of others like to overanalyze xD. But please do make a thread, I would like to see solid references and such :)

Depends. If the coin is made from solid gold, which is probably the case as I doubt they can plate metal, then it'd be worth at least as much as $1 USD when the gold standard existed. Which means it'd be worth quite a lot. Figure its probably an ounce of gold, so well over a grand in USD by todays market value.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

I'm guessing that:

1 Bit = 1/2 USD

2 Bit = 1 USD

Their economy seems to be more trashy and unpredictable than mine in the UK.

One day, 3 or 4 bits is enough to buy a cherry,

Another day it seems 3 or 4 Bits is enough to buy just about anything,

I blame it all on Rarity - She uses Dragon-child labour to harvest Gems, thus meaning that gems become worthless due to her over-farming of them. The gems used to be worth a lot of Bits, 'til they became worthless, now, about a million faultless diamonds of considerable size and pure Emeralds and Rubies are worth a couple of bits.

The gems used to be valued in bits, showing how much a 'Bit' was worth...Thanks to Rarity and the collapse of the Gem market, Bits cannot be valued and are instead used as however much a shop keeper decides to value them...

Or something like that...^-^

  • 5 weeks later...

I know this may seem strange, but im starting a discussion about currency.(Yes,currency,Money,Bits, you know).

You can post Equestrian economic theories on like how the currency works and so on. I will start it out.

If you have 8 bits, why wouldn't it be called a byte, and if you have 8000 bits, why not call it a kilobyte?

and so on.

I agree with Star Weaver, also that they're not far enough in technology to have the words "Kilobytes", computers, or anything like that. (though they have arcade games  ) Relevency, I don't know. Equestria's logic goes against everything natural.

I think Equestria's economy is suppose to stay relatively simple

They just go from ten's to thousands and millions if possible. Although kilobyte would make a funny computer reference.
