technology Your thoughts on 4chan

Sooo, it's 4chan's little brother that doesn't even have the slightest sense of humor? Makes sense why people hate it so much........

Did it spread the "Arrow to the knee" thing, or was that 4chan's fault?

Yeah, that's a good description of it. It steals a lot of content too. As for the arrow to the knee thing, that was the work of both of them, I think.

4Chan...A nice place to go if you want a laugh. Just went there last night and left in tears. Haha.

I've been going there for a few years now and I think they are pretty cool dudes. You just need to get their humor, it's a weird kind of humor...

I used to be an avid user, but I stopped going there as often as I used to

I still go back every now and then though. Once you start there's no going back

Also, many have said over the years that 4chan was a place where "smart people go to act retarded." This is getting less and less true as the years pass by. It's still somewhat correct to say that, but I think eventually it'll be more a place where "retarded people go to act retarded"

As for the arrow to the knee thing...

That was Youtube.

Not to mention there are places on Reddit that are actually far, far worse. I would way rather be on 4chan than Reddit.

I heard that Reddit used to allow child pornography and only started cracking down after they noticed considerable attention brought to that fact. That alone makes the site a complete no no in my book.

4chan is a dark eldritch abyss, filled with porn and malice. 4chan is the one who shall bring about the dark ages of ancient lore.

4chan causes more chaos and the burning pubes of a thousand Discords. And above all, 4chan is wonderful, in a dark and twisted way.

4chan is the most extreme place on the Internet. The people there are willing to try anything, but really, is that a good thing? They are quick to tell you to kill yourself or insult you, but at times they can be friendly. There will be porn if you go there, and most of it will be creepy fetishes. If you go to /b/, 1: Don't, and 2: be very careful. they can photoshop almost anything, and they can find you, like in the picture i posted with this.

I once saw /v/ work together to solve this incredibly hard set of questions just so they could win a game.

Needless to say, they won. I have never seen them work together so well before...or even after that.

They can be extremely awesome at times.

Respect them for bringing about some of the most famous memes and internet sensations (such as the Brony fandom), but other than that, it's a very hostile group of boards with nothing really special you'll find in it.

4chan... Just another section of the internet's cesspool. I've been there a few times. It was alright. Full of blithering idiots going on about how y is superior to x therefore die in a fire. At least moreso than other sites. Apparently there's a lot of hard to stomach things on there but I've seen some of the worst the internet has to offer so it was like a walk in the digital park. I do have some screencaps of threads that were on there thanks to stumbleupon and I still laugh when I read them. All in all, not a great site but the internet would be different without it.

On a side note, has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

ITT: people mistake /b/ for 4chan

Even 4chan hates /b/ guys. The rest of the site isn't all that bad. A bit of anarchy, but it's acceptable. Places like /tg/ are especially friendly. Just avoid the porn boards, /pol/ and /b/ and you should be fine.

  • 1 year later...
(edited)

So I was originally going to post this article on my Tumblr (If any pony thinks I still should put this on my tumblr so more can see it leave a comment telling me so and I'll put it up there). Anyway last night I wrote an opinion piece on the internet culture that is 4chan. With this as a starting point, what do you think of the society and culture of 4chan?

4chan

4chan is an imageboard, this is similar to a text based forum with the obvious difference being it is designed for the posting of images. The site is born out of other similar sites of the early 2000's, most noteably '2chan' from Japan. The pecularity of 4chan is that it is simultaneously an old site and one where undeniably a lot of today's newest memetic and viral material is created. In addition to these factors the site itself is completely anonymous, allowing any user to post without attribution.

4chan is infamous for being a bridge for trolls, and a place for the plotting of illegal activity both online and offline. Contrarily the site was not designed with the intent on becoming malicious, it is fundmentally just an internet forum where people can discuss practically any topic; from anime to videogames.

An interesting aspect to the culture of the site is it's use of coded language specifically in the offensive terminology used on a regular basis for one user to communicate with another. In addition to the coded language there is also a lot of in-referencing to themes based around the culture of the site itself.  I believe the reason for this combination of factors is to repel users who would upset the culture the site has created. In other words, like any internet forum where users have the ability to discuss common interests the main reason for anyone doing so is acceptance into a community. The offensive nature of the site can perhaps be explained further by it's age, the site predates a time when social media was as prevalent as it is now. A time before Facebook, Twitter etc. Users want to hold onto an outdated model for online communication ie where you are completely anonymous because of the kind of unbridled discussion that can come out of such a free platform.

I heard that some bronies hate it, but they fail to realise 4chan was the cradle of our fandom in the first place ;) Other then that I don't know anything about the place at all.

, there already happened to be a thread for discussing 4chan in general and sharing how we feel about it, and since that's what your thread was based on, they've been merged together. Just letting you know :)

Most of what I saw on 4chan were disgusting, objectifying, and demeaning things towards girls and women, which wasn't funny and this is coming from a pretty lighthearted, non activist type person. Have since not returned.

It's true I have never seen anything that is in-offensive to women on 4-chan. That said the site is also deeply homophobic, ant-semetic, and offensive to any group of people.

Well, I've heard things about 4chan but I've never actually visited the site myself. I might go one day just to look around out of pure curiosity.
