It really does depend on the book. For things like Harry Potter, where I already generally know what's happening, I can do 120 250-word pages an hour, easy. But when I'm doing something like Stephen Hawking, I read really slowly so that I understand what's happening. When I'm reading a little paragraph, I can average about 750 wpm, with decent comprehension.

It's good to see that a a fair amount of you do read, I can read faster than stated in my first pst, but it varies, as those are books I enjoyed a lot I read them carefully, I do have on book that is takin mea long time to read, The Necronomicon, it is the collection of H.P Lovecraft's greatest works, as such it means that it is written using older English words and structure.

Side note, those of you who read, check out my latest blog entry, I would love to hear your thoughts.

I read pretty quickly for my age I guess. I finished the final Harry Potter book in less than 36 hours, taking time to sleep, eat, and play some games with my uncle. I don't have enough time to read or else I could spend all day doing it. I read Bitterblue, the third Graceling book, in two days and it's 539 pages.

Books, you know those things made of paper and full of words that people rarely glance upon these days..

Anyway.. Mybpointbis, none of my friends ever seem to read, and I know very few people who read often, I love reading and find myself quickly enthralled by the magic of books, too quickly in fact, for in my desire to know what happens next I find myself consuming books at aerator fast pace. I've just finished the last book in a trilogy, a book named "The Traitor Queen" it occurred to me after finishing it that the people I know who do read spend weeks or months on a single book, I devoured all 531 pages of this book in 13 hours.

So I ask, how quickly do you read?

As a secondary question to those who don't read, why don't you?

(as a comparison, I finished the last of the Harry Potter books in 2 days, which would be about 20 hours of reading)

Only 20 hours? Dude I finished it in 6-8 hours! (I read at ungodly speeds when the book is extremely good) I don't read so fast now though. Stopped reading for awhile because I got really hooked on video games. But now I'm starting to read faster again.

Your two questions mix into one answer.

I dont read because I read REAALLY slowly, Which sucks because I want to read but I just get put off by how slow I read.

The weird thing is, I LOVE Role playing.

And the one thing I enjoy reading is the walking dead... awesome books.

I am a pretty quick and avid reader. I've never measured my speed, but when I was a kid I could finish a Bailey School Kids book in under 30 minutes, a Goosebumps book in an hour and an Animorphs book in 2-3. I remember always sitting around waiting in class for most of the other kids to finish a test or reading assignment because I'd be one of the first to finish. These days I'm plowing through much bigger stuff at a similar pace: Enron, a Karen Carpenter biography, exposes on Sarah Palin, George Carlin's Last Words and more. But I've gotten through most of that, so soon I'll need something else. ^^

When it comes to books, I usually read only 5 chapters or so a day, which takes me about 30 minutes then I get bored 'till the next day.

However reading like a blog or instructions or a shortish paragraph or two and the ilk it'll only take me like 30 seconds, I read that stuff faster.

Do I like it?

Do I feel sick and have to sniff every five seconds?

Are there any people distracting me?

Am I concentrated?

Many things contribute to how fast I read, or if I can read at all.

It depends on what wind of book I'm reading. If I read too fast, I skip stuff, and then I don't know what's going on. But if I read too slow, I get bored.

Generally on a book with normal sized pages, I can read a page in about 2 minutes. I don't know if that's slow or not...

Well I don't really read often I just don't like reading much, why you ask? I don't know it just doesn't spark my interest. I get quickly tired of reading after a while my neck hurts and I get tired of trying looking at words I guess :P

I can read like... around 20 pages in 30 minutes? or was it 20 pages in an hour.. I don't really remember I've never really clocked myself on anything. It might be more then that, might be less. I just read in school when I have to, thats it. I'd rather just have live action of games or movies. After a while of looking at a big wall of words my head just gets tired of it I guess.

Its not like I have anything against books though. Just not a big fan of them.

  • 1 year later...

Depends on the book/how much enjoyment I'm having out of it and how much stuff I have on my plate honestly. Like for an example, I finished Veronica Roth's Allegiant in a few days, but it took me about a month to finish Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare.

So plainly, it just varies.

I read at a fairly quick pace. I just finished reading Steven King's "Rose Madder" in about four days and it's 412 pages. I couldn't tell you how long I read at each sitting, but I use an Aluratek Ereader Libre pro book reader and bring it with me everywhere I go. Due to my visual issues, I have to set the font to 400%, even with my reading glasses. I picked the Libre Pro because it does not have WIFI or any internet connectivity.

(Nopony can tell where I download my books from!)

I managed to find an image of it set to the default largest font size.

You can see that sometimes at the highest setting, it has slight formatting problems, but that usually only happens with PDF files. I usually stick with EPUBs, and hardly ever have a problem. Even if it's there, it's not a big issue and the large text size is well worth any inconvenience. I have to turn the page five or six times before I actually get to the REAL next page though, because only a paragraph or two fit at a time at that setting. I've had it for three years now (Got it on a Black Friday sale at Big Lots for fifty dollars!) and it has more then paid for itself. I literally have used it every single day since I got it! That is an astounding amount of reading, I can tell you!

I read pretty slow actually. I'm not sure why, I mean I read text on the internet all the time! Though.. I don't read books. Maybe like one book a year, lol. I've noticed that if me and a friend start reading the same text, they're always finished before me.

Well, it is one thing to read quickly and entirely another to read a lot in one sitting. I believe that i read somewhat slow most of the time, since there is no reason to rush, but i remember reading the last Harry Potter book ASAP the first time, meaning i skipped one night sleep and kept reading until i had to go to school, felt dead tired there and had issues staying awake, but as soon as i got home, i kept reading somehow and finished it. So yeah, didn't take long with that one, but i was motivated.

Truthfully, I don't read near as much as I should, especially books. I'll read articles on the internet or in the newspaper in addition to message board posts, but I really haven't sat down and enjoyed a book in quite a while, so it's something I'm looking to remedy soon. I can't give an exact number of words that I can read in a given time frame, but I do think I read quite fast and very well at that. Sometimes I read a little bit too fast and it becomes more difficult to comprehend and "absorb" what I'm reading, so sometimes I take it slow. I've always been placed in high level reading classes throughout my school years, so I can safely say I'm a fast reader. :)

I like to read, but I would just have to force myself to do so. When I was able to finish the first Harry Potter book after ten days, the rest of the series was a breeze. I did the second in 5 days, and the third in six. I think it took me no more than a month to finish the whole series.

Well, I read pretty quickly, but it depends on what I am reading.

If I'm reading a story, I read slowly just to taste the words before swallowing them. But if I read a theory book, then I read pretty fast. :P

I need to read more, but I don't really have a lot of free time...
