And more importantly, what was it used for? what was/is it's purpose?

Forged eons ago by some dark unicorn wizard or something. If there's been good magic, then there's always been bad magic; dark magic, in this case. It appears to be fiercer and more intense than good magic as well, simply in appearance. I assume thousands and thousands of years ago, back when alicorns or unicorns first started coming up with magic, all it would take is one bad guy to take the spells and create his own branch of magic. Dark magic.

 

Probably used for evil, at first, by it's creators. Once they were defeated, good magic users probably studied it, and occasionally used it for non-evil purposes, like Celestia and Twilight. They used it in moderation, to keep it from affecting them. But then there were those like Sombra who let it consume them.

Celestia invented it eons ago to try to take down Discord. It didn't work so she and Luna used the Elements of Harmony instead. Later she taught it to Sombra who was her first student. He was corrupted by it and the Alicorn duo had to whip his flank when he started enslaving people.

I assume it was created by some ancient civilization and discovered later on by other's, but forbiden to most unicorns due to the dangers of it. This is why only Celestia Luna and twilight know about it. As for sombre I think maybe he either stole it from someone who had the knowledge, or was taught it by Celestia or someone else who knew it. He may have also found some kinda old copy of a book of dark magic somewhere.

 

I can't say theres any names present for who specifically made it. I really hope we get answers in this season though, or maybe even next season.

My thoughts are that Starswirl might've discovered the dark arts, and that is what is listed in the book Luna was holding up. Either that or maybe Sombra discovered the dark arts and was consumed by it.

It wouldn't make sense if dark magic DIDN'T exist. As far as how Celestia uses dark magic, I believe that dark magic can be used because of guilt as well.

Think of the days, the months, the years after Celestia banished her sister to the moon.

Luna probably attacked her, and she had to fight her back.

She was probably scared as well, I'm presuming more scared for Luna then for herself.

When magic comes to be, or exists in their universe as it always has, there will always be light and dark. Why we haven't seen it until now? Convenient plot device. Looking at this from a physical standpoint, It would make lots of sense for dark magic to exist. It would be essential to balancing forces and movement in the universe they live in. It wouldn't be dissimilar from our own energy and dark energy, the difference being their laws of physics allow for a direct physical control of matter through these energy mediums. Dark energy in our universe serves to push the universe appart, as opposed to normal gravitational energy that brings it together. Dark energy is much weaker than gravity, so there is more of it; about 75% of all matter in our universe is dark matter. Odds are, dark magic existed at the same time as normal magic. So from this sort of a perspective, it makes sense.

I'd like to imagine that, since Discord is the embodiment of Chaos and all things unharmonious, when he was imprisoned the first time, the darker aspects of his powers were unleashed and solidified to form pinnacles of dark magic, which, in turn, created strife and anger between ponies which lead to the conflict between the three races, allowed Windigos to be created, allowed Nightmare Moon to form and, ultimately, gave King Sombrero-Roche the rather sinister powers he has at the moment, or had.

 

I'd like to think that but it would most likely be that dark magic has existed for as long as harmonious magic because equal and opposites, blah, blah, blah. In order to balance the forces when the Elements of Harmony were created, dark magic had to be created in order to maintain said balance. Its purpose would be to make sure everything remained equal, etc etc. I prefer to think that this is all Discord's doing somehow but it seems unlikely given how he is constantly frozen in stone.

Dark Magic is like the Dark Side of the Force. Always been there since Magic bega. It's probly easier to give into and use, with really powerful results, but at a great cost to be payed eventually.

Two sides of the coin is pretty much my theory. With Celestia talking about "Love" and light when she energized the crystal, and then "Hatred and Fear" when energizing the crystal, i'm thinking magic maybe emotionally charged.

 

The stronger that emotion in ponies, the more it influences their magic. However, the catch comes in the form of a sort of "connection" where the stronger the pony's emotional connection to their magic, the stronger they are as a unicorn. Alicorns probably symbolize the top level of this since Celestia raises the sun and Luna raises the moon, not sure about Luna atm though, and Cadence symbolizing Harmony/Rhythm/Love of ponies.

 

Twilight, hopefully not becoming an alicorn, symbolizes a strong with magic, if not the strongest a unicorn can potentially have. Speaking about Trixie, she symbolizes a strong affinity for magic, but doesn't have that strong emotional connection Twilight has obtained/been born with.

Twilight seems to approach magic like we approach science, with rational rules. So I'm thinking that all magic is a more or less neutral presence that ponies have just formed opinions about. Dark magic is easier to use for destructive purposes, but that's not necessarily the only way to use it. Like how nuclear reactions are dangerous and we associate nuclear weapons with war, but nuclear reactions themselves aren't evil -- and they can also be used for good purposes like generating power.

My guess would be that it had always been there like normal magic, but normal unicorns don't know how to tap into said Dark Magic because of how powerful it would be. I would assume that the more powerful unicorns such as Twilight (Or Starswirl the Bearded because he had to be super powerful or something) could use it. Obviously we know Twilight can. Celestia can, and I bet Luna could to. Now what was it used for, most likely for evil things, destroying old civilizations, and terrorizing ponies. I bet that there are quite a few books on this subject somewhere in the Canterlot Royal Library, that most ponies don't know about since it seems most ponies don't read or study magic.
