Things You Dislike About the MLP Fandom

Recommended Posts

One part of the fandom that grinds my gears is so-called "fans" of MLP:FIM who bash bronies, the brony fandom, and/or common brony fanons. There are several communities, blogs, and DeviantArt groups by people who claim to love My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, but bash and demonize the fandom in every shape and way possible.

For those who claim to love the show, they don't demonstrate that at all by bashing the brony fandom, whether it's mocking screenshots, vulgar brony-bashing art/stamps, and brony-bashing comments. For one, the brony fandom and staff are extremely close, and we've seen a lot of contributions the community has given, such as donating money to Kiki, a little kid that Tara Strong is very close with, to help battle her cancer; as well as the Brony Thank-You Fund, which uses part of the funds to donate to Toys for Tots. Just because we have sour apples or sour moments in the brony fandom doesn't give brony-bashers the excuse to stereotype the fandom and bash the crap out of it.

When you bash a fandom, you're passive-aggressively bashing the product as well as the people behind the scenes. Without a fandom, the product and communication with the professionals can't grow. You may not enjoy the fandom as much, but bashing the bronies (especially if you claim to love My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic itself) is extremely disrespectful to My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the people who work on the product so people can enjoy it. Whether you like it or not, the brony fandom has earned that respect because it's vibrant and appreciates the show and creators; therefore, the creators appreciate them in return. if you go out of your way to bash that fandom (or any fandom in particular), then you give MLP:FIM a massive disservice and frankly, tells me you're no fan of the show at all.

Another is when people claim to not be bronies because they have a different viewpoint compared to other sectors of the fandom. That's an extremely pretentious line of thinking. You don't have to follow every common viewpoint to be a brony. Take me, I'm a Sonic fan with a completely different viewpoint in comparison to most of the Classic fandom. But that doesn't change the fact that I'm a Sonic fan and respect the Classic division. If you love the show and try to positively promote the community in any method — whether it's music, fanart, customs, and even forum discussions — then you're a brony. Just don't bash the brony fandom, and I won't tear your opinion apart.

This last peeve applies to all fandoms, including this one: when people stop enjoying a character/episode/show/'ship because of fandom reaction or drama. If you truly loved what you loved, then you would love it regardless of fandom reaction. Losing appreciation to something because of a fandom is a sorry excuse and tells me nothing more than the fact that you weren't even a fan to start with.

The only thing that annoys me about the fandom is the people who try to convert everyone to bronies like it's some religion. I mean, guys; I'm an atheist but you don't see me yelling at every Catholic and Christian out there to change their beliefs.

Cloppers don't annoy me at all. I don't clop, but I'll admit that I do read the occasional clopfic.

Grimdark artists and writers? I love them! ^^ I love gore and horror and things like Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory I can say I enjoyed.

I like Rule 63. Genderswaps can sometimes be hilarious.

I feel like anyone who has been a part of the fandom for any decent length of time will understand me when I say that there is only one thing I hate about the fandom: /mlp/

I'm pretty cool. I think.

Also, new OC (it has a cutie mark this time!).

Wow, great thread! Pretty much everything that I get annoyed with is in here too. I won't go into too much detail with those but here we go:

Bronies who try to "convert" people, or even use the word convert to refer to becoming a brony. Guys. Seriously. Would you say that Star Trek fans converted? Would you say that anime fans converted? No? Then stop treating MLP like a religion and start appreciating the show for what it is - a cartoon.

The whole love & tolerate thing. I agree with the message, but the problem is that people don't even try to adhere to it. And yet they claim to. Also, you don't need to shout "love and tolerate" everywhere in order to love and tolerate. You should just do it and let your actions speak for themselves.

Pornographic ponies. That is just gross and disturbing. Thank goodness for Tumblr Savior, otherwise I would never be able to browse the MLP tag without getting pictures of pony vag and ass. I also do not like porn at all because it sexualized women and turns women into sexual objects. And you are doing this to characters in a show for little girls. Maybe bronies aren't pedophiles, but don't you people look like pedophiles when you look at pony porn? Why don't people see anything wrong with this?

On that note, when I was at Youmacon, there was a panel called Equestrian Embassy, where the panelists talked about the history of the show and the fandom and whatnot. They went into a little bit about fan influence and how it can be a good thing or a bad thing. And this socially awkward and annoying person sitting by me raised his hand and said, for everyone to hear, "I think that the people who complained about Derpy were all retarded parents!" The panelists handled his outburst really well, but I sat there embarrassed for being a part of the same community as this kid. I know that MLP is just a cartoon, but even if only 1 out of every 100 bronies acts this way, it reflects really badly upon the rest of the fandom. I wasn't so much embarrassed for myself as I was for the rest of the normal people who like the show.

Fighting on YouTube. In soooo many videos, there are arguments between bronies and anti-bronies. Some of them behave rather well in arguments, but most people don't, on both ends. Internet arguments are stupid. We don't have to fight people who are different from ourselves...

I saw a couple of people complaining about Equestria Daily biases... and to that I say meh, it's their website, and pony news doesn't have to be super serious and unbiased. I am not a Trixie fan by any means but they can do whatever they want. It doesn't bother me as long as I get updated on the stuff that matters to me like the trading cards and episode synopses that get posted. Besides, they posted our Brony meet up from Youmacon on their Nightly Roundup a few days ago and I'm in the picture. :3

Another annoyance... I agree with the following points that were already made:

people who put ponies in the center of their lives instead of treating ponies as a hobby

-people who complain about the quality of the episodes in very nit-picky ways.

people who call anyone who doesn't watch ponies a hater, or someone who tries to force everyone to watch the show

-WORST PONY types. Best pony types are fine e as long as it's all in good fun and you don't take it too seriously, but worst pony makes me sad.

There is probably more... lol there are good things about the fandom! The negative is just easier to elaborate on...

Some cloppers just take it too far thought and just say allot of clop related term that really bugs me I just hate it..

I suppose how some people take it too seriously. I love the show too, but c'mon some of the ways people show their affection is unbelieavably annoying or straight-out creepy. Almost a dissociation of reality.

Other than the things Aquila mentioned on the 1st post, there are these bronies who claim that MLP:FiM is the freakin' manliest show in the world

Denial on the highest level~♪

All my brohoofs to you, good sir! I couldn't stop laughing when I saw this picture, especially within the context of your post.

The one thing that annoys me is the sense of blind devotion that a lot of the younger members seem to demonstrate. Now, devotion is obviously a good thing within a fandom. The only part that I find annoying is the lack of perspective that comes with the fact that for many of them, this is their "first" fandom. It's not their fault; they'll figure it out, without me having to say a word. A lot of times it's even cute, seeing a young fan's blooming aspirations to convert the world. Still annoying sometimes.

Cloppers and Spammers/missionaries. Every single negative stereotype out there about Bronies comes from these two groups.

I completely agree with you. I can't stand people that sexualise the characters in this show. It's disturbing. So very, very disturbing.

I really don't like it when anyone takes something from MLP and mixes it with some sort of adult content and heavy language.

I mean seriously, that's disgusting. It's a show for all ages. I think that the fandom should be for all, too.

It also gives a bunch of us a bad reputation.

Another thing that I don't really like is the whole "Love and tolerance thing" a lot of people who express that don't tolerate the people who don't tolerate.

And if someone doesn't follow "love and tolerate" then a non-brony goes on with "BUT WHAT ABOUT LOVING AND TOLERATING!? YOU'RE SUCH A HYPOCRITE!!!" When the brony wasn't agreed to any love and tolerance rule.

Such a rule is never even mentioned in the show.

I think tolerance is a nice thing, but in moderation. When someone does something awful, sometimes it's best to stand up against them, like that time Futtershy went up against that Dragon.

I despise the immediate hostility towards anyone that hates on the Brony fandom. People that hate on Brony's are not very kind, yes, but seriously, be the better person! Isn't part of this fandoms whole deal supossed to be Love and Tolerate?! Seriously when I first revealed to this site that I used to be a hater I got several messages saying that I deserved to be banned and that I was a queer (seriously, this is too stupid to make up) and even one saying that I was going to hell.

I also dislike the hatred that is given towards people who clop, write clopfics, or read them. Nobody should care what someone else enjoys on a sexual level, that's their business not yours!

I agree that it is none of anypony elses' business, but I don't like when people make "clop" things and then sorta throw it around where everypony can see it. Yes, it's their business, but if other people find it disturbing they should put warning tags on it so that they don't stumble on it by accident. I'm a great believer in openmindedness but I don't think porn of any kind should be put where children could potentially see it, and personally I don't agree with pornography of mlp characters so I guess I'm biased on that. they don't put it where kids can find it though. This is the problem I'm talking about! People aren't just out on the streets of the internet saying, "Hey kid! Here have some 'special pony art!'they hide pretty well, to the point twhere it frustrates their fans! and the fans also aren't sitting there posting videos of themselves just fapping away to a clopfic!

What I dont like is that some of us have obviously never heard of the saying "Don't feed the troll" :/ This seems to be a big problem with getting people to accept us, we get some of the younger members of the Brony community 'Feeding the trolls'

the fandom's attitude towards cloppers. kink shaming bothers the hell out of me. i mean personally clopping creeps me out a littlle and pony porn was never really my thing, but bronies who just bully cloppers and say that they "aren't true bronies" is just...really stupid.

I didn't mean that, oh dear...

I must admit, before I joined this forum I thought there would be a lot more clop art and fics, like everywhere. I was pleased to discover people were a lot more considerate than I was expecting. I was talking about tumblr, and other websites, where you search for mlp art and come up with a load of pictures of ponies screwing each other. Especially if someone else is in the room, it's quite embarrassing.

Number one thing I dislike: Derpygate.

I know a lot of (if not most) of the people in this thread weren't around when it happened (January-February 2012), but let me tell ya: It was bad. The scars of it are still visible to this day. I've heard stories of people putting on the "Save Derpy" video (the one by Nomorehtan9 and PierceSmoulder) and half the attendees exiting the room in protest. Derpy's character can now scarcely be brought up without debates raging. In September Brony rapper Yelling at Cats released his controversial song What Went Wrong, part of which is a pretty blatant death threat to anti-Derpy activist Yamino (Cats defended himself by saying that the song was sung from the point of view of Derpy, not his own). Cats received death threats in response to that song and there are now serious efforts to ban him from all Brony conventions.

Can't we just move on already?

Personally, I really like the Brony community. Everypony is kind to eachother and I feel like here my opinion is respected and I don't get lectured for things I like and dislike. There are some amazing fan arts, fan fictions, fan characters and even fan gender bends and voices for them. I enjoy seeing how all my fellow Bronies are and what their view is on different things, however, there are a few little things that irritate me and/or I don't see are right about this fandom. I don't wish to try to change anypony's opinion with my opinion, but I'm just saying how I feel.

1. I think that Trixie Lulamoon is way too overrated. She humiliated most of the mane 6, boasted her 'amazing magic skill' across Ponyville, lied to Ponyville, especially Snips and Snails, they were so convinced they brought an Ursa to town. To bring her back in to the show to then humiliate the mane 6 (and possibly more ponies), cause more chaos and probably lie some more would be heartbreaking. Twilight is a great pony and to see her banished from her own hometown would be even more heartbreaking.

2. 'GOD POWER' OC's. This is mainly alicorn OCs that tend to have these god like powers. I've only done RP a few times, and those few times is why I don't RP anymore. People have these OCs that have more magic than Celestia and Twilight put together and more speed than Rainbow Dash. Healing powers and resurrection? A big no no for me. If someone's hurt or dead in RP people that say *she heals you with a touch of her horn* can't RP. Surely to make the RP interesting you wouldn't do that. That's what I think, anyway.

3. OC x one of the mane 6. It doesn't bother me so much, but I find it quite disturbing that someone has created an OC to make love with the ponies that we know the most. It kind of changes their personality and what I know them for.

4. 'GIRLS CAN BE BRONIES TOO!!!!'

Yes, we know. There are many female Bronies / Pegasisters around the world.

5. Hate on people who don't watch ponies. I agree that some non-Bronies lecture Bronies for liking the show and won't have it, but there are some people who either aren't ready yet or don't know yet. Some Bronies are a little too stereotypical. 'Oh all the non-Bronies are complete dicks.' Really?

I'll add to this when I can think of more or when something new that I never thought would annoy me pops up.

I hate people who force it and also I dislike clopping which is ok but people being open about it gets our reputation for being pedophiles...

I've only been a pegasister for a short while, but I've still noticed some things that I find to be somewhat annoying. This doesn't mean that I hate anyone and if anyone takes this the wrong way, I apologize, however, I will voice my opinion on the subject anyway. A lot of what was already said by Aquila, I agree with.

The missionaries - I don't approve of spamming unrelated sites with ponies in an attempt to convert people into bronies or pegasisters. You can be proud of being a fan of My Little Pony, but when you start forcing ponies upon people, you're going overboard. Doing this not only makes you look bad, but it also makes everyone else who is a brony or pegasister look bad as well. I've heard complaints about this as well and I agree.

The hypocrisy. We're all human (or are we?), and we all make mistakes, so hypocrisy is going to be inevitable. Yet, the brony fandom produces some of the biggest hypocrites around. We all know the brony slogan--love and tolerate, right? Yeah, except no. You might have seen those who go around with a victim complex, thinking that anyone who doesn't like MLP is a hater. You've probably seen cloppers around, too. And with them, the clopper haters screaming about purity or something like that. What happened to your love and tolerance? Yeah, most of us aren't like that, but it's prevalent enough that it makes a clear impact on how we're perceived by others.

The "X IS BEST/WORST PONY" people. Normally, this wouldn't be a bad thing. It's natural to have favorites. Mine is Twilight, and I'm not afraid to say it. What annoys me, however, is how some fans can't accept anyone not liking their favorites. I'm sure you've seen this one quite a few times as well. This issue ties in closely with the previous one.

I just remembered. *POSSIBLY SPOILERS IF YOU DIDNT SEE S3 EPISODES YET.*

Hating on previous generations is going to catch the show producers attention and will make them do more of what they did in 'Too many pinkie pies' with the G3 face. I saw a lot of hate on that.

Similarly, Gak. Hating on it will only bring more.

It's nice to know that my respect for opinions is appreciated. Also, thank you for the welcome. I will update if I find anything else that annoys me about the fandom. For now, I'm going to jam to my dubstep and work on finishing this rug I'm making.
