Inaccuracy of the MLP toys

Ok, so I went into a store with a few friends, and me, being the only pegasister in the group, decided to finally check out the my little pony toys. They only had a few left, mostly Applejack playsets and one fluttershy one if I recall, and a bigger one with two ponies, one was Rainbow Dash, only just, and I can't remember who else.

Rainbow Dash had a long curly mane and tail with colours that don't even appear in her mane in the show. Applejack actually looked OK.

The accessories did not match the characters they were put with, I can't really remember all of the accessories, but I remember seeing a bunny rabbit in with applejack and one in with RD... and of course the traditional brush and mirror.

Do you buy these playsets? Have you been noticing the same thing? Of course it's not really a big deal, but still. I'd rather purchase the unofficial plushies fans have been making, to be honest, they look much better!

I only like the little sets of three. Those seem pretty genuine to me. But I hardly buy merch.

The cancer-esque plushies are unsettling though.

the Unofficial toys and plushies are way better then the Hasbro stuff. what i never understand is why is celestia always pink in the toys but shes mostly white on the show that's not even nit picking shes just the wrong color most of the official merch sucks.

I don't like the figurines, mostly due to how they do the manes and tails on them.

Like that. See? When the mane is made with separate strands like that, it never stays the way the mane is supposed to look on the show. How could they do that to you, Fluttershy? HOW? :(

While I've not bought any of the playsets I have noticed the strange inaccuracies when compared to the show; like Rainbow Dash having butterfly wings etc. But thats marketing for you, they'll do different stuff to the show and perhaps the show might run with it and perhaps it might ignore it. It happened just the same with the original transformers and He-stallion (showing my age now).

I'll admit though I do wish they'd make things like Pinkies mane actually look like Pinkies mane.

It could be worse at least shes the right color too bad she looks nothing like fluttershy the eyes are wrong the hair is wrong the face is wrong and the over all shape is wrong -_- you would think for such a big franchise that the toys would be less..... rubbish

Yeah, that's what Dashie was like, except her mane was really curly and tacky-looking. :/ And eeyup, that annoys me too, I thought they might have deliberately done that so you have to style it yourself, but seeing as you've said that I guess not. :C

Well, we're talking about Hasbro here. They're going for quantity rather than quality. I'd happily pay more for a toy that actually looks like the characters do on the show.

Now, when it comes to pairing accessories with the wrong ponies, they do that everywhere. I remember, when I was into Pokemon, the figurines would be paired up seemingly at random. No, it wouldn't make sense to put all the eeveelutions in one pack, you have to pair Jolteon with Machamp and Vaporeon with Magmar...

shes the wrong color and it looks nothing like her. They even put a picture of what she actually looks like on the box. wtf.

Don't be silly, toymakers(Can't tell if Hasbro or off-brand). If you ignore the Cutie Mark, that's totally Princess Cadance. Not Celestia.

I dont understand how they can get something so wrong.... well actually i can because they care nothing about the show or the fans or the toys its all about money. where as the fan made stuff is MOSTLY made by people who actually care what their work turns out like I got a fan made rainbow dash plushie off of ebay and its about 1000x more accurate then the official plushie witch is possibly the worst thing i've ever laid eyes on.

I've seen this before, and I too thought it was supposed to be Princess Cadence. Until I got closer, that is.

I mean... wat...huh... Please, Hasbro, you've got a quality show on your hands, don't ruin it with...This!

There are ways to make their manes and stuff look more show-accurate. My fiance did this to a few of hers. I'll post some pics when she gets her Ponyville set up again.

Yeah, I think the toys are pretty terrible. I don't mind the blind bag ones as much, as they tend to be a bit more show accurate (Except Fluttershy). But even then, I got Zecora and she's huge in comparison to the others.

But, I went and bought a bunch of the toys and plan on taking them apart and customizing them. It's fun, and it'll be nice to have some show accurate figures! There are lots of people out there that do some amazing customs, if you're willing to shell out the money. I know they cost a bit, but you have to figure that you're supporting an artist as well as getting an awesome figure.

*shrug* From my perspective, the toys look pretty good to me. o 3o

I mean, yeah, the toys have a few hiccups to them. But most of the mistakes in the toys can be fixed.

One example is that Applejack lacks her freckles and her hat. But you could always get some white paint, and paint her freckles onto her face. And as for her hat, you can always make one for her. Or you could go and buy a Woody doll, take his hat, and place said hat onto Applejack. And then boom, Applejack now has her hat. xD

Also, there are white Celestia toys out there. Toys R Us has (or had) some, and in the... yellow (I think it was yellow) blind bag series there is a white Celestia.

Even still, the pink Celestias can be fixed; just paint them white!Posted Image Tada!

And as for the manes and tails of the brushable ponies; they're for stylizing, so those toys' manes and tails aren't going to look show accurate at first. But you can always style their hair to look show accurate if you really want to. I did that to my playful pony brushables, and for the most part, I think it turned out decent:

I'll also say that I honestly like Hasbro's newest plushies, even despite the funny noodle hair they gave them. They look really cute to me and I hope to get one someday~Posted Image (Plus they're a hella lot cheaper than the fan-made ones~)

Yea, the toys are mostly just updated versions of how the MLP toys have always been. Other than creating versions of fan favorite characters (Vinyl, Trixie, NMM, etc.) they aren't really directed at the Bronies. Blind Bags are the best at being official show accurate, maybe one day they will enlarge them as collectors items for the fandom.

Till then you have a few options:

Style their manes & tails yourself (http://countschlick.deviantart.com/gallery/36478258)

Buy custom kits (http://otakusquirrel.deviantart.com/gallery/32123217#/d4b1m02)

Buy completed customs or plushies of your favorite characters and just leave the Hasbro versions alone on your shelf "just to have"

I know.

Its extremly annoying. You would think since MLP has such a big fandom they would maybe try harder? Maybe their aimming towards the youngers fans. But I doubt a little girl would be put off from a white pony (Celestia)

Whatever.

Let them lose my money XD

Agreed. I don't think hasbro are aware of our side of the fandom to be honest, but then again, all they see in My little pony the show is still just a 20 minute long advertisement for their products. Shame, really.

the people who decide stuff like what color the toys are and how the hair should be probably dont even know what the mane 6 look like in their own show. some of the toys are so bad its like someone described a pony over the phone and that was that. Its all about spending as little money as possible to make as much profit as possible.

You know, as annoying as the toys are, I suppose you could always appreciate that it opens a window for fans to make a little bit of money off of them from customizing them. Hasbro meets their bottom line and fans get to take advantage of the holes that Hasbro leaves.

Yeah, that's true, I mean, there have been some pretty amazing custom ponies on the internet, particularly on the older generation toys. But still, with people who may not have the talent to customize them professionally, such as the younger fans, they are going to have to pay loads more for someone to do it for them.

It's because Hasbro has to stick with their original designs aimed for their primary demographics (little girls). If they appealed to the Bronies, it would probably make the other children turned off by the new design and you can kiss those profits goodbye.

Hasbro has also made it clear that the toy franchise and the show are two seperate fields. Sure, some characters from FiM make it to the product line but other than that, there's no "Faustian" design or any "Brony" fan suggestions added.
