Human-Like Technologies in MLP, and the Strategy of Attacking Equestria

Note: I'm very new to the series, so there are bound to be questions that overlook things in the series or go against lore. But, hey, I guess that's why I asking these things. Being the avid roleplayer I am, I want to get acquainted with the lore before I RP.

 

1. Is it possible or likely that firearms might exist in the world of MLP, despite not being showcased in the show? What about other weapons?

 

2. If there is any, what is the extent of electronic technology in MLP? What about communications? Radios, phones, carrier pigeons, etc.

 

3. Transportation? Is it possible that cars, aircraft, etc. could exist? I'll admit, most of this is all because I'm normally lore-hound I like to know the lore of what I'm interested in down to the last detail.

 

Bonus: If you were the Commander in Chief/ Chief of Staff/Field Marshal of [insert a country here], how would you go about invading Equestria? If any, which factions would you ally with, and which would you make war upon? How many troops/vehicles/ ships would you requisition?

Usually, in fantasies like this, modern technology doesn't exist, especially in the presence of magic and supernatural themes. That being said, I doubt there are guns, cars, etc.

1.) The closest thing to dedicated weapons that has been seen so far are spears. That being said, i wouldn't rule out the existance of firearms, in fact I think they may have primitive black powder cannons.

 

2.) They do have motion picture and phonograph like technology, video games have also been depicted in the show. My theory is that the technology is actually magic based, and the unicorns use gems to power their technological devices (refrence Flim and Flams Cider Machine which ran on magic). Think Harry Potter tech and you probably won't be too far off.

 

3.) They do have steam powered trains (well at least one anyway), and as I said Flim and Flam's magic based cider machine which was also an automobile of sorts. There are also balloon powered flying machines, which includes an airship that was seen (albeit breifly) in the episode 'Sweet and Elite.'

 

Bonus: The secret to invading Equestria is in dividing the three main racial factions, the Earth Ponies, the Unicorns, and the Pegasai.. this actually isn't too hard as they are inclined to infighting, however their leader, Princess Celestia, has a remarkable ability to quell such infighting... my advice, assassinate Celestia and conquest will be easy... conquest that is... ruling over will be an entirely differant matter. Funny thing is, you may be best served by hiring each faction to fight one another, hire the unicorns to take on the Pegasus since they have the cloud walking spell and the most air ships and their arrogance works well against them, hire the pegasus to take on the earth ponies cause they have been bullying them for centuries anyway, and hire the earth ponies to take on the unicorns cause the earth ponies hate magic and aren't going to be fooled by their tricksy magic.

1: As mentioned, spears and swords seem to be the only real weapons in the FiM setting.  

 

2: The technology depicted in the series seems to around the same level that humanity was at the early 20th century, just without any firearms. They do have appear to have some sort of power grid, as we saw a dam (which I'm assuming is hydroelectric) in the Mysterious Mare-Do Well. So that puts them about 80-100 years behind humanity. But their magic kinda makes up for it, so the gap isn't all that big, unless military tech gets involved. 

 

3: Trains and pony pulled carts/wagons. That's all we've seen. But as 1/3 of the pony population can fly, it doesn't really slow them down. 

 

And If I were to be in charge of an invading army? Easy, target the earth ponies first. They're the only group that can work the land and grow food efficiently. Without them, the food supply would run out in time and give my side an edge. The Pegasus soldiers would be of little concern as they would be no match for modern anti-aircraft weaponry. Yes, they control the weather, but military grade hardware can take the abuse. That leaves the Unicorns. Up close, their magic could prove problematic, but I would just keep them at range and hammer them with air strikes and artillery. And add the fact that ponies would be overwhelmed by our military toys as they have never had to fight a modern type of war, so humanity would have a HUGE advantage on the battlefield. That is, until Celestia and Luna showed up. I'm not sure how well those two would fare when pitted against our weapons, as I have no idea of how powerful they really are.  

 

But if I had to get one side to join me, I'd go for the Earth ponies. No food=victory for me. I'd use the argument that the other two Pony groups have been using them as cheap labor and that I'm here to liberate them. Underhanded I know, but war is never pretty XD

Well, Rainbow Dash did mention, in the 'Find A Pet' episode, that she needed a pet "real fast like a bullet" to keep up with her. She also named the tortoise who became her pet "Tank." So, unless "bullet" and "tank" have different meanings/connotations in the FiM universe, they must have some concept of these artifacts of war.

 

The previous two posts pretty much sum up where technology and transportation stands at the point in time the ponies are living in, although I believe the history of invention and manufacturing in Friendship is Magic is based on necessity of adaptation. That is to say, certain inventions, such as trains, telescopes, and printing presses, were invented at the times they would have been of greatest use or profit. This isn't too different from mankind, but ponies do not live in a world driven by manufacturing-based competition. We see that they use modern tech alongside older tech, such as flashlights alongside oil lamps.

 

This shows that the ponies are not quick to discard technology simply because quicker or more advanced equipment has come into existence. They also seem to adapt their environment somewhat to their own needs, such as building houses and creating plumbing, but they do not overdo it and do not face problems of urban sprawl or overpopulation such as man (as far as we can see). This demonstrates a close, harmonic relationship with nature and a peaceful acceptance of manual labor.

 

They are probably driven by the mindset that if every pony helps pitch in, society will be productive, peaceful, and accommodating.

Nice to see another lore hound

1. Although like others have said, all we have seen so far in the canon universe is spears...and deadly pies that can bring down a buffalo. I reckon guns/muskets would exist somewhere.

2: I think everything in Equestria is powered by magic. Although I see the griffons in a sorta steampunk age  

3: I had my doubts before. But after seeing babs seed, it is obvious that they have knowledge  of locomotives.

I think it's likely that what modern technology they do possess is powered by magic. I mean, we've seen Twi with all sorts of scientific equipment when testing Pinkies Pinkie Sense, so they obviously have some advanced tech.

 

Anyway, for an invasion plan, assuming I know everything I do now, the first thing to do would be to have covert operative assassinate the Alicorns and Shining Armor and any other high ranking guardsmen, followed by an immediate invasion of Canterlot and seizing of the EoH. While this is happening, other are capturing and containing the Mane 6 and keeping them sedated, as well as taking measure to prevent the Unicorns from using magic(most likely through damaging or removing the horn), the pegasi from flying (straight jacket would work, possible wing-clipping if they get out of hand), and prevent AJ from breaking things (also a straight jacket). As this is a serious subject, I assume that Pinkie can't reality warp her way out of stuff for comedic effect.

This not only devastates the morale of the ponies, it cuts off the most powerful and experienced ponies from the people. By keeping the Mane 6 alive but controlled, we can prevent a new group of ponies from linking to the elements; like this, we have control over the EoH and the only ones who can use them.

After this, an immediate invasion of all major cities. Unicorns are to be captured or killed with the highest priority, followed by Pegasi and Earth ponies. Resources allowing, all unicorns and any particularly rebellious pegasi or earths are to be dealt with as detailed above, to minimize the extent to which the equestrians can fight back.

At this point, I would try to extend communication to the Changelings and at the very least, secure an agreement that they won't interfere. They could prove extremely problematic, should they decide to enter the war on the Equestrians side. However, I think that, if offered a deal allowing them to come to equestria and feed off the love once we conquer it, they could be persuaded to he our allies, at least temporarily.

Anyway, after the major cities fall, armies would begin to sweep the countryside, take smaller towns and villages, and other things such as that. Once the initial invasion is over and we have taken the country, negotiations for pony freedom can begin, allowing them to live as they did, albeit under the fist of the human army and rulers.

Pegasi cities would have to be destroyed relatively quickly. Given there nature, they'd be nearly impossible to police, so they'd all have to be destroyed and the pegasi forced to live on the ground. Also, while probably not as problematic as Unicorn magic, and significant force of pegasi skilled at both flight and weather control could easily maintain air control over a fairly wide area, so taking out pegasi groups quickly and efficiently is vital if we are to have air support of any kind.

 

Another factor we can't dismiss: an invasion could quite possibl awaken Discord once more, and he'd probably go around fucking up whoever and whatever he felt like, which could very well end the invasion.

Also, it's possible that Windigoes might show up, with the high amount of negativity and whatnot generated by an invasion.

But,there is a fanfiction called Fallout:Equestria,which has a lot of guns/rifles/muskets,along with melee weapons.

1st I dont think they have guns due purely because of the fact they can't pull the trigger, but Bows and arrows plus spear and halbard weapons have been shown before.

2nd Yea I could see them having radios in the episode where Fluttershy and AJ went to Las Pegasus they had radio systems sorta...

3rd no they walk I think because they manually move most karts and stuff like the Cabs in Manehatten

That's not how it's gonna be in my show! There's magic AND technology! People don't seem to always agree on which is better in this universe! :3

Assuming this toy is canon from the movie, yes, Fighter jets and missiles are canon to the series.

And the pirates in the movie have flintlocks and whatnot of a renaissance level, plus we have airships already in the show. So We most likely have a "Steam punk with occasional high technology" type deal.

The tech needed to make a steam engine is the tech needed to build a cannon. Boast Busters shows they have fireworks, thus gunpowder.  Of course, just because they could make cannons doesn't prove they do make cannons.  For weapons, well it's plausibly been along time since they've had a war & the Wonderbolts have not shown much when trying to fight, so IMO their military has a bad case of Peace Disease.

 

They do have telegraphs (Family Appreciation Day), so they've got electricity.

 

If I was going to fight EQ, I'd start with bio warfare. Terrorists have been using Anthrax for decades & it will kill horses & cows (IDK about sheep).  Probably wouldn't affect either dragons or griffons but it looks like EQ is the Great Power & the others are militarily insignificant.  We could vaccinate against Anthrax.  The big bottleneck is going to be supplies.  The key variable is "How easy is it to get to EQ from Earth?"

1- Dashie mentioned the word bullet in May the Best Pet Wins or whatever that chapter was called, implying that the concept is known at least. No firearms shown, but they might have cannons or other powder-ignited mechanisms. I think they are limited to big-ass turrets or other platforms carrying them, but I don't think they carry portable firearms. Even if they do, I doubt they are more advanced than a musket, so thay won't help much anyway  

2- They normally communicate with letters, but AJ communicated with Rarity by unknown means in the chapter with the chimera  . Teleporting and Luna's dream wandering are also possible means of communications in times of war, but their evident lack of numbers is crippling (not many mastering in the former, and one of a kind on the latter)

3-Transportation. They have carriages, steam trains, boats, and zeppelins as far as we know

 

Even with all the magic in the world, I think the ponies will be obliterated by a strong, and even a mildly strong military force  if one were to invade Equestria
