music About Rap.

Ok i was going to post this on the Unpopular opinions thread but i think this needs its own thread because i want people to see this and give some feedback as to why this is so common.

My Input:

SO many people...and i mean SOOOO many people dislike and or hate "rap" music, which in all honesty i don't get, BUT to each his own ya know? but the part that bothers me is when people say it isn't real music, or it takes no skill, that's bologna.

Rap music indeed requires skill and just as much skill as any other form of vocal.....talent...usage..thingy, i would know, i write the stuff, and not the lame BS 1 word per 10 seconds kinda rap, when trying write rap with even a modest level of speed, having the words sound good, rhyme without sounding generic, sound catchy, deep at times, unusual etc etc, is not a walk in the park by any means.

And not to flip the script on other forms and styles of music, but i don't see how any song writing for any other style, (Rock, ballads, R&b, Blues, even screamo) are any more skillful, they do take a different level of vocal skill to Sound good(sometimes), but not everyone sounds good rapping either, and alot of the skill in rap is like i said, writing it, writing songs is of course also a huge skill thing as well, but there is no discernible difference in skill needed when you compare writing both song songs and rap.

I really don't see why people say it doesn't require skill, the beats for rap can SOMETIMES be Basic poop, and ALOT of rappers are also Poop, But the thing is, most people dislike -->Hip-hop<--, not rap, -->hip-hop<-- has changed and its subject has become dull, Repetitive and i will say to some degree skill-less.

Shee rap itself is the entire style of how you put words together and say them. Not a subject or theme, its a very broad word and encompasses ALOT.

Example: You may say you dislike haiku's or limericks, but you wouldn't say you dislike Poetry in general, because that is way to broad a thing to dislike. and there is always SOME piece of poetry someone likes.

Another thing is i have heard rap IN non-rap songs, eg. a rock song or so with a small snippet of rap in it, yep people who supposedly dislike rap like those songs....da fuu?.

SO peeps who read this, if yall really just don't like words said in a rhythmic fashion....then do what yall do, but yea that what be in my head, so please.....discuss.

I used to love some rap artists. Young M.C. was my favorite one becuase his rap was honest and had a real positive message. I even listened to NWA waaaay back in the day. Now days, I just have listen to the lyrics of some of todays rap and it's all about bitches and money and dope and gangsta style and owning the streets. In other words, nothing. (don't flame or hate me it's just the way i see it) At least Eminem turned his around a little after he finally "got it" so to speak.

@@TheSeji,

You are 100% right and people nowadays lack respect for other genres in music. I cannot stand it when someone hates on something without any prior knowledge of what they are hating on. It just goes to show you how annoying ignorance can be. Yeah I may not like rap but I do respect the talent and effort that goes into it. I would never say that rap is "talentless/not real music".

Just because someone does not like a certain genre does not give them any right to bash it!

I like rap, although it's not a genre that inspires great emotion in me or really speaks to me. That's fine, I have my instrumental music for that. I guess I'm a fan of "nerdcore" and stuff like that. I first found out that rap doesn't have to be somebody talking fast with no musicality about it from Epic Rap Battles Of History. Now I understand that beat and rhythm is crucial to rap, more than most other genres of music, and that rap can be very clever with rhyming and flow. It's helped me appreciate other varieties of vocal music more.

TL;DR: Rap is not Crap

I know this may not be the thread for posting up our favorite rap music, but I thought I'd share something with you guys that I consider rap... it may be a subcategory though, rapper/singer style? I feel that someone's taste for rap will vary, depending on other genres they like... Some will like the more melodic stuff while others will like the ones that are more lyric emphasized rather than rhythm emphasized.

I dislike rap. However, music is a form of self expression, and saying it is not a legitimate type of music is simply a stupid thing to say.

I have a Fluttershy quote:"I don't hate [it]. I just really really really really really really dislike [it]." That's how I feel about 80% of rap. The only time I like it is when it's actually saying something worth hearing, now the bullcrap they're playing these days, so I kinda tend to lean more toward brony rap. :P

Okay, my jazz with rap is mixed:

I don't like the newer kind of rap.

It's too sewious for my tastes. Although I give respect to the rappers today.

Seriously, nobody has fun anymore..... I'm cereal. It all sounds like they're rapping about how much their life sucked. At least to me.

I love old-school rap, stuff that's fun, funky and catchy.

Namely, these too are my favorites:

Yeah, I said Will Smith.

I especially like RUN-DMC.

About those who hate rap.... Well, they just don't have an open mind.

If they haven't given it a try, they shouldn't talk trash.

I listened to your Nikki Minaj  and One Direction....  <_<

i do like rapping as a lyrical style. i think it's cool when some bands blend in singing and rapping into the lyrics. it's a really good blend (i want to do something similar when i write lyrics for songs. i actually kind of did in the lyrics i wrote for Quake 2's Gravity Well).

hip-hop the music i have my likes and dislikes for, but i have quite a bit of stuff i like.

I used to dislike rap and I still dislike lots of the generic stuff, but my boyfriend let me hear some different kinds of the style this summer, not only the crap I hear on the radio and around me at school and I actually liked some songs. It's definitely not one of my favorite genres, but I appreciate it a lot more now.

Quick note though: Rap does take skill, however the mainstream rap doesn't, well it does, but EVERYTHING is done for Lil' Wayne, Nicki, Drake, etc.

They have people write their lyrics, they are told in what fashion to rap said lyrics, they are then auto-tuned FOR them, making them literally do nothing but spit some rhymes.

(Mainstream rap sucks BTW, real rap artists do their own stuff, even the stuff written for the mainstream rappers are very, VERY generic and is quite stupid, I'll stick with my Don Johnson big Band and D12, thank you)

Most people base their choices on rap just on the mainstream media and such.  I used to think this, and I used to bash rap, that was until I actually listened to some rap artists that actually are rap ARTISTS.  I can see why people think it's a horrible genre, they base it on the mainstream "rappers".  I personally like "Immortal Technique".

I may not be a huge fan of rap, but I acknowledge that there are good rappers and good rap music out there. I think it's really ignorant to hate on a genre of music just because you aren't a fan of it.

I just personally don't like violent and nihilistic lyrics of alot of it, I don't mind fun songs, but rap "party" music just comes off and douchey rather then fun for me.

I'm not much for the heavily bass based production either.

Well, of course there's rapping as a vocal technique, and as a genre. Just as there's hip hop as an instrumental style, and hip hop as a genre. I have quite a bit of stuff with rapped vocals.

I personally don't find much wrong with rap, even though I barely ever listen to it. I find that most of the criticism are attempts to justify someone's shit musical taste by insulting the music others listen to. Rap, being very popular right now is just a bigger target of these insults, along with pop and hip-hop.

As for "rapping not taking talent", that's a huge load of crap. Even in rap, are there discernible and intended pitches, done with rhythm. The thing is, rapping isn't clean-singing, and people are too brain-dead to notice any of these intentional touches, so they dismiss it as something talentless. It's almost as stupid as when people think that harsh vocalists are talentless, even though they're far from it.

Just my two cents.

For me it's just an acquired taste of sound for my ears. I am not a big fan of Rap or Hip Hop but I personally love certain individual artists like J Dilla because some of his Hip Hop has a lot of powerful meanings to it, but also he does a lot of Hip Hop/Ambient mixes which is what I love about him.

Some songs from guys like Notorious BIG, Tupac, and other earlier artists are good, but I have to admit that a lot of today's Rap (even other genres) do not appeal to me. Unfortunately, today's norm of rap seems to revolve around the promotion of hard drugs and alcohol as well as degrading women and many other issues, and that never works with me. However, some of their music does explain the pain and suffering they undergo in where they grew up, or what they witness around them and creates a monumental message for those that listen.

So over all, Rap is not necessarily bad, it's just poetry with a beat.

Its not the sound of rap,its the content. I REALLY dislike what the more common rap is focused on like sex and drugs. I wanna listen to music that makes me feel better, not dirtier or more pissed off for no good reason.

While a lot of rap can follow those sorts of themes, there is a whole hell of a lot that breaks out of that and focuses on things that are less... annoying.

I'm not a rap fan since it's really just recently turned to awful lyrics rife with curse words and bad values (materializing women, etc.) but it does require skill, and not all of it is about drugs, money, and sex, so I can't generalize.

I admit I do kinda like Grieves, though. I met him and he seemed really nice as a person, too.
