I already haven't taken it to seriously but there seems to be a lot of people on this forum that get so defensive about them strictly being vegetarians. Pinkie Pie already talked about how she liked eating hot dogs, they use milk and eggs on their pastries, and really their diet isn't really canon. The writers just write whatever they want to make it amusing. I mean I would think horses eating that much pastries would get pretty sick as well.

You thought wrong. Have you tried Vegetarian Hot Dogs? If all pony diets are strictly vegetarian (I said if, not since), then their hot dogs could be made from tofu, egg whites, or soy protein instead of actual animal meat.

I think since, animals produce products like dairy and other materials that they need to make certain food. The ponies breed the animals, so they can get the things that they need. No meat needed at all, since they are vegetarians.

They will eat literally everything that can fits to their snout, be it rotten apples or leftovers from lunch or even dead ponies, and in return they shit out fertilizer. The machinery's available to them already. They can bake cupcakes, can't they? What are they doing? Mixing ingredients, putting it in an oven, and serving it, right? Vegan hot dogs are made by mixing ingredients, putting them in a steamer, and serving it. It's not any different.

 

Also, vegan hot dogs could be simply "hot dogs" with a basis of it's own. The idea comes from an innovator instead of an existing ingredient like in our world.

Unless the eggs put into baking cupcakes are unfertilized eggs that had no way of becoming a chick in the first place. In such a case, eggs are just a byproduct of chickens, like milk from a cow. They're meat-produced, but not meat itself.

 

And truffles are a type of fungus found in forests in Europe and North America. Hogs/pigs are domesticated and used to track them down.

Okay here is what I think they use animals for

 

Cows:

They are sentient beings as seen in the show. Yet I think they function to provide the Daniel products

 

Sheep:

Also elsnerint beings. As well as other sheep they can be used for their wool.

 

Chicken:

They are used to get eggs to be use to cook.

 

Pigs:

Ummm. Maybe they use them to get rid of all the bad food wast. Applejack once did say the bruised apples where fed to the pigs, so maybe.

 

Oh I almost forgot

About eating eggs. Unless they are fertilized they would never become hachilngs. Also vegetarians can eat dairy products. Eggs fall in the dairy catigory. Vegans can't eat dairy producs. If, and I am saying if, ponies are vegetation then by definition of a vegetation they can eat eggs.

It is important to realize that while in real life ponies are herbivores the ones in the show have extensive differences from the real world.  In regards to the show itself the only hint that they are solely vegetarian came from Pinkie's Over the Barrel song.  In the end though the fact they eat eggs and partake of dairy ruins any attempts at calling them vegetarians.  In the end though it doesn't really matter as like the technology level their diet will fluctuate to the writer's needs.

 

Finally my last argument is 'Little Piggington' in Spike at your Service and the pig awards in Sisterhooves Social.  The only logical argument to pigs getting that large (and being celebrated as such) would come down to slaughter.  I seem to remember them having bacon at some point as well but I was not able to find a picture of it.
