technology Are we moving too fast technology-wise?

No, I don't think technology is moving too fast, or even fast enough for that matter. Science mixes with technology, but science is starting to advance faster than technology is now, which is causing an unfortunate delay in discoveries.

If anything, technology isn't advancing fast enough, if we advance fast we should be able to explore space sooner and stop pollution sooner, cure diseases sooner and hopefully come closer to world peace.

i believe that we should all have some moderation and that if u wanna use your phone use it but dont excesorize it. Use it when it is absolutly neccisary like to call someone or find directions but dont use it to post a dumb pic of your cat ur food, overall we should use moderation and use it but not rely on it fully.

In terms of technology, we can never move fast enough. The world will be a better place when we have the technology to provide basic healthcare, shelter, and food to every last person on Earth. Until that happens, technology has not advanced far enough yet.

Call me crazy, but we should go faster -with proper oversight, both from peer review and from market review.

First, if Graphene had been more known 4 years ago when it was discovered and tested with more financial backing, electronics would be much cheaper and smaller today.

Second, the Google Glass system (from my perspective) is simply amazing, and it's already rumored to be released at the end of this year - Which is insane, considering that it is a simple graphic user HUD with minimal casing, and is usable by anyone who has vision. All those sci-fi dreams that were born in the 80s are now coming to life.

Third - quantum computing has been achieved, though it was done with a very simple math problem. This means computing can be done at the atomic level and without the need for massive, dedicated systems such as the home PC or a supercomputer.

Fourth - The Higgs boson was reportedly discovered last year. This supports the current String Theory and Membrane theory, which also have the probability of having alternative dimensions that are created and destroyed on a massive scale.

As a researcher and a scientist, I believe science shouldn't be hindered, though I do believe it needs oversight. While Scientists and researchers must study previous, horrendous acts of cruelty in the scientific community (which is good - it teachers us and enforces what is immoral or wrong, as dictated by the Nuremburg Codes) they must also pave the way for the future. Risks will be taken, but they always must be taken with the best security, and the best plan.

While companies will always try to press a gimmick, such as 3D, upon the users, the more practical functions of new technologies will always stick, with our without market influence.

Yeah, I think we are moving too fast. In the last 50 years, technology has improved very quickly.... only to grow even more in the next few years. I recently discovered Google Glass.... Sure, it looks cool, but I don't know... Its scary.

I think we are and I wish we'd stop going to fast. I CANT KEEP UP Dx

Well, as for smart phones, they're more like dumb phones. They need to improve that. Like, every smart phone I get is mentally dumb. My computer is smarter and easier to cooperate that any of my phones.

But, even video games, they're evolving too fast and same as TVs. I dunno, I just cant keep up :P

...So you think the human works too fast with their technology, because thats just plain up wrong if we did work too fast the world would have ended in WW2.

Um, no I am answering the question, we are moving too fast. The topic was asking if we are moving too fast and yes, we are. So many things are being invented.

Not really because ihpone 4 is just an iphone that has more details laid into it nothing else at all so you were saying that iphones were 'invented' theres already been able to do that since 2009.

The more people there are, the faster we're going to progress. It's a fairly natural correlation, and I see no problem with progression. Heck, we need to get off the planet. I'd love to live on Mars. And it's looking more and more likely that something like that might happen during our lifetimes.

I see people denying that technology is progressing due to the slow progression of gaming. Hate to break it to ya, folks, but videogames are probably the worst place to look to see new technologies. All videogames are owned by corporations. Sure, they progress as technology does, but at a slower rate, as the company attempts to milk the console for all it's worth. Heck, a lot of the time companies hold back and don't use all the available technologies in their consoles in an attempt to milk yesterdays technology for all the money that can get from it.

You want real tech talk? Solar power production is skyrocketing the discovery of dipping solar cells in spinach juice quadruples output. You heard me right. Spinach juice. Companies like Walmart and IKEA are in the process of outfitting all their stores' roofs with solar panels, which would give them far more energy than they need to run the building, and they will make millions off of selling energy back to the energy market, which is by law required to accept excess energy. Major countries are taking steps in the Green Revolution as well. Brazil plans to be fossil fuel-free by 2015.

The CyberWorld has opened an entirely new type of warfare upon us. It's entirely possible for hackers to hack into a country and shut down everything controlled or regulated by computers, including stocks and nuclear weapons.

The Cloud. 'Nuff said.

Heck, just check this article out. http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/21/tech/mobile/smartphone-developments-mobile-strategy/index.html

I for one embrace our rapidly advancing technology new robot overlords.

Some would argue we aren't moving fast enough. If things like war didn't exist i would think we as a human race would have at least had a moon colony up and running by now. I think change is good (sometimes) but that's just the way it is. My grandma knows how to text and use the internet.. Quite a step forward from crossword puzzles and soap operas.

Don't sit here and argue with me, then answer your opinion to the topic, not my opinion, okay thanks! I didn't ask for a war here, I just stated my opinion, I thought that's what the point of these topics are about. Don't like my opinion? Well, leave it to yourself and answer the topic with your own opinion and try not to pick a fight with anyone. I never do, I ignore the posts that I think are ridiculous from others. Other wise, I post my opinion to the topic and not to someone to else to piss them off. The point here is to not fight and its all about THE OPINIONS! Move along.

I already said my opinion, so your argument is invalid, anyways why do you think its moving too fast you need to use more than just 3 or 4 that dont even advance further in technology than you.

Technology's coming along nicely, but I don't believe any speed could ever be considered "too fast". Technological advancements on the whole have been largely beneficial more so than anything. As tech grows, so does mankind's abilities. We have diseases that need curing, places that need exploring and inhabiting, questions that need to be answered.

That should be welcomed, not feared.

Oh boy, you're in for a suprise, technology is perhaps moving faster than you might think. Did you know that the things we see now being developed for consumers are actually inventions of the last decade? The things most people see as "futuristic" have actually already been developed. Things like Force Fields, prostheses that you can move with your thoughts, camera's that can film light and can look around corners, chameleon tanks and helicopters, chameleon suits.

Heck, you don't want to know what they're developing these days. Heard about the warp drive? No? Let me explain, this thing is able to shorten SPACE in order to travel perhaps, in a sense, faster than light.

What about the fusion reactor that's being build in France? This beast makes MASSIVE amounts of energy from WATER, our Earth has TONS of that. Through fusing hydrogen from water we can create massive amounts of energy, combine this with a nuclear reactor to split too heavy molecules we can create even MORE energy. That would mean energy will become DIRT CHEAP.

Still not impressed? Okay, we're also working on plasma drives, that create plasma out of electrolyzing gas, any type of gas is sufficient. This means that we won't need to send a rocket every so and so years to correct the both and increase the speed of our satellites (They bump into gasses and slow down, so they need to get a little "push" to stay at the same speed). Not only that, the resources of such a rocket would be reduced a LOT, meaning not only we have a rocket that can both go BACK AND FORTH to our satellites, we do this with things like oxygen, nitrogen or argon. Heck, we could collect gas from space with our satellites and use that in their plasma drive so that they can adjust their velocity themselves.

So, is technology moving to fast? Nah, it has to be faster, I want to become ageless, I'm still waiting for the Grand Unification Theory, I'm waiting for forms of time travel (creating 2 wormholes, connect them to eachother but allow the path from one wormhole to the other be so that it goes around a neutron star, giving perhaps the ability to go BACK in time). I'm extremely excited for the future, perhaps now when these developments are finished people will start thinking more rationally, heck, if the oppertunity arises we might slowly change into unified earth, instead of still living in seperate countries. That would be wonderful.

Both HDTVs and smart phones took a long time to proliferate to the levels they're at now. When Smartphones were taking off it was all about the blackberry. Yes, RIM used to be very relevant and it wasn't until around '04 that High res meant something outside of your computer display. I'd post the XKCD comic itself but apparently this forum hates XKCD so here's the hyperlink. The same goes for 3D. 3D movies have been around for quite some time. I remember watching one on a field trip around 2002. The tech has been around for quite some time, but we're just now upgrading.

Are we moving too fast? No, not at all. Silicon based ICs have been around for about 40 years if not longer and Moore's law says 2017 is when they "top out" in terms of die size. It took at least 30 years for CPUs to have more than one core on the same die. Quantum computing is just getting started. SSDs still have under a million writes per bit.  The most efficient warp drive we could build as of now (provided we could even build one, which we can't) would take exajoules worth of energy to drive. The most high tech battery we have outside of a lab is still Lithium ion. The most power efficient CPU in existence has less computational power than that of a underclocked Prescott Pentium 4. The best "cloaking" done thus far was a few microns in outer space. Solar energy generation is still under 50% We don't have any permanent establishments outside of Earth. The most high tech bionic eye we have is a pixellated, monochromatic mess (though it is an excellent stride forward). Various cures, medical augmentations and maybe even regenerations are years off. And the icing on the cake is people are still using Windows XP.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

Ironically the lower standards of the 21st century Lithium Ion doesn't help.  I still have some that are going on 10-15 years that defy any and all Li-Ion standards.  GG Sanyo and Sony.

As for the question I've kinda felt that technology typically lags in business vs. personal use.  I know it's been going a bit faster than it was many years ago but at the same time we're hitting some massive hurdles (LTE, Windows 8, etc.).in that one they pass it'll slump back down to around 2003 when XP was the norm and the sixth generation of gaming consoles were doing strong.  There is always better technology being made behind closed doors until it's ready for consumer use (although I will say the flexible OLED is kinda creepy).

Now, where we are going too fast is in terms of firmware (software that drives a piece of hardware internally, not to confuse with drivers).  I've seen way too many devices being released that have bad firmware and it's annoying to troubleshoot.

Of course most of my primarily laptops are still 4:3 aspect ratio and single core.  My T60 gets little use.
