Well from the word Go it takes a Government-funded research program about 25 years to get there using the best technology. It's not a sprinting pace but it's a darnsight faster than waiting for the stars.

What is unfortunate is that it has been decades since the last moon landing by the US, and the Chinese are well on their way to getting to the moon themselves….

 

What happened to the US being the undisputed leaders in manned spaceflight? Aside from Mars rovers and R&D, NASA has pretty much been outsourced….

Well NASA basically kickstarted all other nations in getting their own rears in gear. Roscosmos (Russia's Space Program, the successor to the OKB) only exists because NASA really wanted it to continue to exist after the Soviet Union collapsed, and funded it for several years, on top of their own initiatives with the Shuttle Program (and planning for the Freedom Station, which was eventually merged with ESA plans, forming the International Space Station). China is running under its own steam because several Spaceflight Organizations asked if they wanted to be part of a larger joint effort, and they refused. Several times. India too.

 

It's not like we didn't try friendship, so it's not our fault.

 

That said, it's not like they're slouches either. China's developments have been very impressive. They'd just be even more impressive and develop slightly faster with the cooperative efforts built upon the existing experience of the United States, Russia, Canada, France and Germany.
