Should Rarity get a boyfriend?

Forlong

Recommended Posts

Okay, we've all had a laugh about Rarity and her desire for a Stallion in her life that isn't named "daddy", but should the writers hook her up?  Would it be good for the show and her as a character?

I think it would help her develop as a character, if she got with the right guy.  With Blueblood, she realized that what she wants isn't really what she needs.  I'd say she needs a guy that's down to Equestria (you see what I did there? wink.png ).  Somepony that likes the simple things in life and doesn't need everything perfect to ballance out Rarity's extremities.  It would also be even better if he had problems that Rarity helped him with, like being a bit of a slob or not thinking ahead.

Yeah, I'm all for Thunderlane being that guy, but let's be real.  He doesn't have much of a personality and they could just as easily make a new character as make him that guy.

It's entirely possible in my opinion, that atleast 1 of the mane 6 will gain a partner at some point during the following seasons. Who it will be, Im not quite sure, but relationships are universal, and just so long as they don't  ruin it by making it some pathetic Gen 2 or 3 love story, then Im completely fine with it...

I don´t know, but wouldn´t that completely break spike´s heart? :´c

But, yea, it has been at least hinced before, and maybe will find it´s place in season 4, I wouldn´t lay my hoof in the fire for it, though...

I agree with you. I mean it's a nice idea that's been mentioned before and all but....Would it put too much stress on the Mane 6 remaining whole? I mean it might make for a good episode if Rarity was trying to juggle time between her friends and her boyfriend, but I doubt it would go very much farther...It might be one of those, "Yes it's around but not mentioned." type of things if Rarity does get involved in a serious relationship.

I'm not sure if I would do that in the show. Remember the original intended viewership for the show, being younger girls. I don't know if they really want to insert relationships and shipping into the show like that. I mean I guess it could be done harmlessly, but I pretty much doubt that they would do it.

However, if they did do it, Rarity would definitely be the first to experience this, since they had hinted at in multiple times throughout the show.

This could go either way. I mean yeah it may muddy up the show a bit but...it could also maybe teach some young ones not to be clingy...maybe to still have your own life OUTSIDE the relationship. There are plenty of "lessons" the show can teach with this topic. It could be a good idea...

Can we please stop using the argument that "the show is intended for little girls"? It's actually kind of insulting to kids, who can handle more mature themes and ideas than adults give them credit for.

And who says that a romantic relationship on the show has to be explicit or have an entire story dedicated to it? You can show that kind of love in a kids show if it's done with subtlety and in conjunction to a larger narrative. Just look at Adventure Time and Regular Show.

So I'd be up for it if the writers gave it a shot.

Don't worry, it'll most likely happen in Equestria Girls. I mean they are going to High School and all.

And Thunderlane becoming her boyfriend? A bit too sudden, don't ya think?

With Rarity's good looks, background, and grace, it wouldn't be the most shocking thing in the series to introduce a romantic interest of the sort in her aid. Rarity is, of course, into being in relationships with handsome stallions though with the way "The Best Night Ever" episode turned out, it would hint that her outlook on stallions may have changed since then. Rather than daydreaming of marriage, she may now understand that it does take time and effort to build even a decent relationship, and it may not be like her fantasies at all. After all, Prince Blueblood turned out to be the exact opposite of what Rarity was expecting: rude, pompous, conceited, and the epitome of haughty.

Then there is the controversy with Spike's little dragon heart being torn to pieces should this happen to take place. Since we cannot predict how any of them will evolve over time due to the inconsistent characterization in season three, it will be - at the very least! - difficult to come down with his response to that scenario. Of course, there are many fanfics that over-exaggerate Spike's disappointment in Rarity's newfound love life with another man, going as far as to introduce him to suicidal thoughts and a negative outlook on life, but let's face it. That is a reach beyond proportions and more likely an accurate reflection of what happened in an author's love life.

My main objective in making Sparity canon is to let kids (and perhaps more importantly, parents) understand that inter-racial relationships or marriages are never a bad thing: it is the person inside that counts. Though it isn't a necessity, it wouldn't be a bad thing to introduce it just so long as the producers don't turn it into a soap opera. This also cannot resemble fanfiction, so it can't feel "cute" all over without a practical purpose; that humour is already there with Spike's infatuation with Rarity including his antics around him.

All in all, however, romantic love in general needs not be explored in this series asides from the perspective of Shining Armour and Princess Cadence. I do not think it would provide much in the way of substance should it be developed in any of the Mane Six and would most likely be a waste of episodes. A more appropriate time would be an epilogue sequence of the sort where all of them do eventually settle down with their future partners, as that sort of stuff is always implied in some way near the end of any series -- because although FIM has some of the best characterization of any cartoon yet, it is not a Japanese anime where certain themes are more deeply explored.

yes and then they should make a porno

No but seriously, I think introducing relationships would maybe be an interesting twist in the series, although I could see it turning into some stupid "high school drama" type show...

I actually find it a bit odd that not a single character besides Rarity has ever shown a romantic interest in anypony...

I would like her to have a date in an episode, BUT NEVER A BOYFRIEND!!!! JUST NO! FORGET IT! NOT GONNA HAPPEN! angry.png

now, just because Thunderlane caught her in Wonderbolts Academy doesn't mean that she should date him, my perfect stallion for Rarity would be Beat Spark Fancy Pants, he just need to get rid of certain b*tch dry.png

It would depend on how attached Spike is to her. I earnestly doubt he will be shattered or devastated if another stallion were to swoop in and win her heart, but he'd be very disappointed. However, I believe he's strong enough to pull himself together and move on from the hurt in due time. Spike is underestimated quite a bit, after all -- whatever happens, we'll see if he was simply infatuated or really did want to spend the rest of his life with her.

I really think it's just infatuation at the moment.

I think this has already broadened beyond the scope of just Rarity to the more general topic of what to do about love in MLP. We already have Shining Armor + Cadence, but... meh I shouldn't have even gotten myself started on that sham of a Twilight Sparkle plot device... but seeing the Mane 6 in developing relationships could be interesting. There are a lot of potential lessons up in there: finding love where you least expect it, learning to cope with differences, and all that good stuff. But, I think the dynamic of the show would really change if that were done. I'm just not sure if the time is right yet.

I kind of like Citrus King's idea of having the relationship, but keeping it mostly in the background. The problem with this is that if she gets any kind of love interest that isn't Spike, it would be out of character and somewhat poor writing not to call attention to the fact that he would have several massive problems with that, and this would likely bring it out of the background and have it dominate at least one episode.

Ways to resolve this are either to focus on Spike learning to cope with this new relationship (which sounds intriguing, if sad :( ), or to make Spike himself the love interest, in which case the relationship would likely be touched upon much more often. Personally, while Alfonzo made an excellent case for Sparity and why it would be a good idea, something about the age/maturity/level of interest difference between the two hasn't ever felt right to me.

I somewhat like the idea of exploring a more romantic relationship in the series though, provided it's done right (and I'm sure I don't need to spell out the countless ways it could be done wrong). So far the closest thing we have to that is Cadence and Shining Armor, and as their relationship is already formed and stable by the time that we meet them, there really isn't anything particularly novel about it. There's no conflict, no growth, nada. Going more in depth in the subject could be very interesting, and Rarity seems like the sensible character to eplore this with. As long as it doesn't hijack the series for more than an episode (with occasional references to it later if the relationship continues). I'd be fine with it.

There's plenty of good morals to be found in relationships and freindship is a part of relationship, plus Rarity is romantically focused, so why not?  Be really interesting if at some point, Rarity announced that she was pregnant.

I love you.

Unless it's Spike, I don't think that Rarity should get a boyfriend. Unless it's somepony that has an arrogant, horrid personality, so that Rarity realises that  looks aren't everything. Then maybe she could realise how much she actually likes Spike, and then go out with him instead. I think that could make a good episode :)

Since the series has become more made for the fandom I think season 4 would be more adult too. So I think it could be perfectly possible that Rarity will get a boyfriend. Would be awesome just because that means it's turning more and more adult don't you think?

I think it would be a good idea but, I don't think that Rarity has the time for a relationship right now. She is busy with her friends, running the Carousel Boutique, and trying to be a good sister to Sweetie Belle.

As long as it is done in the right way, and Rarity gets the right colt that can be her very special somepony/boyfriend then it can work like that. I never really seen relationships in cartoons except for My Little Pony.

So this will be a good idea for some, and when it goes well it will be a good idea for all.

I think it would mess with the show personally. The shows meant to teach good morals and friendship, not about relationships (except for the Spike subplot and Canterlot Wedding). There is a reason that none of the mane 6 have relationships, its not the shows focus or message. I feel like I got too philosophical there.

All though yeah, I could see this happening if it becomes more Brony fan geared.

To be honest, I think it would be really cool if ANY of the Mane Six got a litte crush, even if it's not Rarity. In fact, I think it would be particularly interesting if somepony like Twilight or Rainbow Dash got involved in the whole boyfriend situation; it would be interesting to see how they'd cope with it.

Also, just because this show is normally about friendship, that doesn't mean they can't explore the morals of relationships. There are important lessons for children to learn about having a crush; we all face that problem at some point in our lives. Plus, it would make an entertaining episode. :)

As for Rarity, I think her getting a boyfriend would be unfair to poor Spike. <3

You are vair vair clever, with that 'down to Equestria' comment. *applause* Hmm. I KNOW pretty much everyone would love to see Rarity gush over her new boyfriend. It would add to her character. Spike would be pretty, mad. XD I think that the producers should make a whole new character, if they would decide to get Rarity a boyfriend. I think I would be really cute and romantic. I'm actually getting excited for no reason right now. EEEEEK!! Rarity with a lover! Hehe. <3

I thought the show was intended for families? I've heard that before... huh.png

Anyways, I have mixed feelings on this. It's been said, it would mess with the show. We're talking about My Little Pony, not some teenage drama. :P

But then again, it wouldn't hurt to try. :)
