Removal of Green Brohoof Counter in Profiles

Oh boy... this topic matter brings back memories of another forum I used to be a part of. I am unfortunately all too familiar with this problem. The only difference is, instead of brohoofs, it was about the removal of a "reputation" system, but the concept was essentially the same. Instead of giving brohoofs, people would +rep a post if they liked it, and it displayed this reputation in the form of gems above their avatar.

 

Needless to say, the community was somewhat divided on the issue, but it seemed like most of them wanted it removed for very much the same reasons mentioned here. So it was removed, but then afterwards there was some community backlash.

 

The point of me bringing that up is this; it's probably just best to leave it be, or maybe provide the optional removal of it (i.e., a setting in the User CP that makes the counter no longer visible to others, if that doesn't already exist and I didn't see it).

 

Clearly, brohoofs have different meanings or values for each person. Some people don't care about them at all and just treat them as a meaningless statistic, while others really care about them. I'm in the middle-ground myself. I like them because it lets me know that people are reading my posts and either agree with or like what I posted. In a way it's kinda fun to see if I can post something that'll get brohoofs, but fun in the same way that you try to get points in a video game, not in the sense that I feel inferior because I have less brohoofs than probably 99% of this forum's population.

 

No, I feel inferior because I'm merely a cupcake, and that's very different (kidding). In the end, the brohoof count is just a stat. Just like your rank, post count, profile views, and time online. Having more of either doesn't make you "better" than anyone. Quality over quantity, after all, and the most brohoofs doesn't mean best quality, either. Quality is subjective in many ways, after all.

 

I think what I'm trying to say is, we shouldn't take the brohoof counter too seriously or to heart. Just have fun with it. If someone thinks they're better because they have more brohoofs, then I don't think the counter is necessarily the problem.

Interesting story. I guess it would be a step worse to have the brohoofs appear as something above your avatar all the time. Atleast now, you "have to" hold your mouse on the persons name to see their brohoofs.... I like the idea of having the ability to hide them yourself. i guess that would make everyone happy, certainly me. I want brohoofs, I care too much about them, I sit and refresh teh damn page waiting for brohoofs. What happens if I get one? Not much, I don't get happy or anything, I just want more, for no reason at all. Euh, it was the same when i played DOTA 2. I had a terribly low winrate, and all those 2000 hours that i spent on that game, I always tried so hard to get my winratio to atleast 50%, I never made it, I was always pissed about it.

Personally, I don't really think it matters.

It's just a green box that shows how much people like your posts.

Although, the brohoof system is sort-of actuate; I mean, Chaotic Discord, you are pretty awesome.

The brohoof thing is certainly useful in a topic, if a great sum of people brohoofed one post/one answer to a question, we could guess on that most people consider that the best answer, but the counter on the profile? Hmm, not sure what actual point there is with that, except showing off "Hey I got more brohoofs than you I'm so much better than you are!"

That sentiment is something I disagree with. Is the brohoof counter to be considered a badge of honor? I don't think so. Heck, I don't think it's even meant to be such. For one thing, if it really was meant to be that, you'd see it displayed everywhere like above your avatar like @@ePONYmous mentioned. Instead it's generally hidden out of sight and you have to put effort into checking how many brohoofs another person has.

 

Another point I want to make is that it really doesn't mean much. Heck, I can easily nail 7 brohoofs for making a post with one picture in the Best Cute Pony Pictures threads. That's 4 times as much as I would get for making a carefully thought-out post in the debate pit at best.

 

Here's what you could do; go post in the stickied picture threads in the Forum Lounge and see your brohoof count go up like gasoline prices on a 50-year time-lapse. Maybe that's what it'll take to convince you that there's no sense in attaching your pride or shame in the amount of brohoofs you have.

I rarely ever get brohoofs for my posts anymore. Besides, most of the 2000+ brohoofs I have is because of an epic roleplay I enjoyed with my friends.

 

So I'm ok with removing the green brohoof count. I'd suggest something else that would replace it though. Maybe we could place how many posts we made there instead to show how active the user is on the forums?

I personally don't have a strong opinion on this.  But if anything were to change, I would give the post count number prominence and deemphasize the brohoof number.

Don't see the problem with the counter. How is it really "braggy" if it's hardwired into each person's profile? People who make status updates like "Yeah, XXXX brohoofs! Suck it, everyone else!" are the ones who are really braggy, no? For the rest of us, it's just a nice little reminder that "Hey, looks like some people actually do agree with some of the things I say around here!" It's encouraging. Without it, some might get discouraged from posting since, hey, who the hell cares, right?

 

Like Commander Urdnot pointed out a while back, it would seem that those who are opposed to the counter have a pretty thin skin about the subject of popularity. I, for one, don't really think brohoofs even really say anything about a member's popularity one way or the other - while some members will have a lot of brohoofs because they are, indeed, popular, others will have a lot simply because they spam up Cloudsdale Colosseum where the posts don't count (but the brohoofs still do) anyway. Or perhaps artists who post a lot of artwork will get a crap-ton of brohoofs on their work, even though they may rarely contribute to any actual discussions.

 

My verdict would be to give people the option of keeping/hiding it, not just removing it outright.

 

(Plus, as a more selfish and/or lazy reason for keeping the brohoof system, I find that giving brohoofs is a good way of conveying approval of someone's message without having to respond. Like, "I agree with what you're saying, but I've got nothing to add to it.")

I think it should be made optional, though, so everyone can be happy.

 

The real problem, as stated before, are the people who are cocky about how many they have, and the people who try so hard to get them.

What is the reason to take it away? I like to have it on my profile for a quick view of how many brohoofs I've achieved.

 

So I guess I see no reason in it being taken away. Unless you put the brohoof count under all of the information on the "About Me" page.

The main issue is more the fact that it's so prominently displayed, at least that's why this thread was made. The idea is to hopefully dispel some of the notion that brohooves actually matter, and that they confer some kind of super cool internet status on people who have a lot of them. If we're going to have a green bar, I think it's perfectly fine where it is.

 

I won't deny that I'm pretty used to seeing the green bar there but I support the reasoning behind getting rid of it.

I rather keep it, it's not really a distraction in anyway and it's fun to see a little gauge of how much of a impact we're making with out posts.

Keep brohoofs to minimize the "^ THIS!" type posts, but remove the green box completely. A total brohoof counter isn't needed. It does more harm than good in my opinion.

Twice as many people want their braggy green box according to the poll, I don't think saying 'too bad we're doing it anyway' will work all too well. Though I personally think it doesn't matter. Moving it to the appropriate location for brohoof stats seems logical.

Basically, 'Brohooves recieved', the info the green box tells, would move over into the 'Stats' section of your profile, right under where it says, 'Brohooves given'. The info would be together, and the pointless green box would go away :3 Makes a hell of a lot more organizational sense.

I'm with this guy,He is right,removing it completely would be pointless in my opinion,if the brohooves are there it's obvious in my opinion that there is the need to see them,not because with them visible the users could say "Yo I have more brohooves then you you suck" but because the number of the brohooves can say if a person is "good" or "bad" (for the lack of a better word) in a way,more brohooves means that the person has good ideas and that many users agree with them,surely it is a loose term of "explanation" (for the lack of a better word) and has to be based on some facts,like the "grade" of the user (Cupcake,Parasprite....) but it can come handy in one way or another,if the Staff thinks that the big green thing is useless then it can be moved,but not in the "Stats" section,not everyone goes there to "stalk" the profiles of users,putting it in the "Community Stats section under the "Time online" line is good enough in my opinion.

Seems to me more people are fine with my idea than not. Because it would seem that many people knee-jerked 'no', because they thought that we'd no longer have a counter for recieved brohooves at all, which isn't the case, it's just be relocated to elsewhere on the profile that makes far more sense.
