technology Any other computer science bronies around?

I'm slowly working through my backlog of algorithms homework (mostly graph algorithms, probablistic algorithms, and a bunch of analysis), and it made me curious if there are any other computer science nerds around on these forums. This seems like the sort of fandom that would disproportinally lean towards the nerdier majors.

Am I ever I am massive lover of all that computer science has to offer but I have recently branched majorly into game design and coding over the massive subject of computer science

It's definitely a pretty broad subject. One of my professors was just talking about that, and how he expects it'll likely end up like engineering has, with different aspects of it branching off into separate disciplines (civil, electrical, mechanical, and chemical, and the various sub-disciplines for each). I'm also aiming at a career in game development, but I see that as more of a long term goal.

I'm more into Maths and Physics than Computer Science. I do use algorithms a lot though to help me ( in some way ) by visualizing or conjecture something.

I love you! <3

Well, I'm not a nerd for it or anything, I have thought about doing it as a career possibly, but I've yet to truly decide. I'm not totally sure what job I'll do in the future really.

I don't know much besides a little bit of knowledge here and there, nothing special really.

I'm still in high school, but next year, I'll be entering UBC's computer science program! I'm already getting a fair bit of coding experience out of Poniverse, but really look forward to combining that with the academic discipline of CS. Having personally met a few of UBC's CS professors over the past two years, I'm really looking forward to digging into my higher education.

I did take AP Computer Science last year and aced the AP exam, but that course wasn't particularly enjoyable, and focused far more on Java language constructs than I hoped it would.

I'm mostly one of those artsy tortured artist types, and I'm majoring in history and creative writing, but I am very interested in computer science. I've slowly been teaching myself javascript and once I am very comfortable with it, I'll move on to other languages and such.

I'm well experienced with HTML5 and CSS, with some experience with PHP and Java. I'm in the middle of learning jQuery and Javascript. With just HTML5 and CSS, I've crafted some great things; my work is heavily ingrained with graphics. I love graphic design along with programming, and being that both go hand in hand in the same way reading and writing do, I've found that I can make things I would've previously thought I couldn't make.

Present and accounted for.

I don't like to think of myself as nerdy... okay, that's a lie. I'm a nerd. Big time. Computer stuff is so interesting to me, considering everything that you can do with a computer. I especially love web coding, and I do server administration and maintenance for another website (all volunteer work :P).

I honestly don't hate being nerdy. I still know how to party, so it's all good.

Used to be but I switched 'cause it was just too difficult to hold. I've decided to take the journey through communications instead, preferably media technology.

Looks like a pretty cool program. Nice balance between theory and pratical application, with some pretty cool electives—AI, Computer Graphics, Parallel Computation, and Machine Learning all look really interesting. My university's CS department is pretty small. The program is good, and it's nice that the classes are so small (10-25 people), but they mostly stick to the core classes.

Yeah, as someone with a burning passion for this stuff, choosing between a large and a small institution was probably the biggest challenge. :P I really like the idea of small classes where I know everyone, but large schools like UBC have so many interesting courses to offer, and some pretty interesting industry connections. One of the professors I chatted with told me, disappointingly, that I won't be able to take all their CS courses even if I wanted to. :(

I'm not sure that I can officially call myself a computer science brony considering that I'm just taking my top heavy baby steps into programming with java. But I've been raised to believe that anyone can do anything if they just put the money and interest into it.

I'm a computer Science student at University here in the UK ^^

I'm on my first year right now, its a 3 year course, after-which i can do a masters followed by a doctorate if i wish :3

Sort of. I'm a HS junior but I think I want to go into this subject, especially anything that works with Linux. I just really love the open source idea, and want to be part of it somehow. Heck, the Debian Linux distro was written by someone who went to college (and still lives) here! (Indiana, by the way.).

I almost went to school for web design. Almost. Was never much of a fan of computer science though, never had the brain or the maths for it either. I probably could pursue a career in web design if I wanted to. So instead I went with commercial transport mechanics, lol. >_<

I have a a fair amount of coding experience. I loved AP Computer Science (mostly because of the people, admittedly). There was a time when I was absolutely obsessed with programming, but eventually quit, since I felt that it wasn't my true calling. That, I believe, is in the life sciences. Since each field will take me along a completely different career path, however, I'm faced with a pretty big problem. It's only made worse by the fact that the university I'll be attending this fall is renowned for both fields.

Gah, choices. ohmy.png

One of the things I really like about having such a small department is that I've gotten to know my professors pretty well, having had 2-6 classes with each of them. Made it a lot easier, for example, to get good letters of recommendation for internships and whatnot.

There's always a first step, and Java is a pretty good place to start. A lot of universities use it for their intro to comp sci courses.

I'm still debating graduate school. I'll probably wait on it, maybe see if I can find an employer that's cool with me taking a class or two each semester towards my MS.

You could try learning a language (C++, Java, pretty much anything) and start contributing to open source projects on GitHub; it's an excellent way to get your foot in the door and get some real experience.

Yeah, it can be pretty math heavy, though depending on your career you can generally forget most of the math the instant you pass the relevant courses. At least, until you get into a higher level job and suddenly need to remember how to do algorithmic analysis or whatever.

My problem would be that I'd never be able to get by. :P I took pure math right to the last year of high school but then I started failing miserably so I took something else. I think at that point I started looking at other occupations.

I know right? they're an "interesting" mix... to say the least.

Yeah, I've never been great at math. Not terrible, either, but it was usually harder to maintain good grades in my math classes than it was in other classes. My Calc I class was horrible; the class averages on the midterms were somewhere in the mid-50's, the professor would assign homework and then forget to go over the material that we needed to know for it, calculators weren't allowed on tests...

I'm prouder of that B than I am of any A I ever got.

That does seem an odd mix, but one of the coolest things about comp sci is that it has applications in pretty much every field you can think of. I'm certain there are careers where that double major is ideal.

I'm currently majoring in Computer Information Systems, but I have been thinking about switching from CIS to Computer Science.

I took a course in computer science last semester and I'll be taking another one next year. Honestly, I'm not the greatest at it but it is kinda fun.
