How do you like them Apples?

So I've come to notice something very peculiar, and that is how the members of the Apple family usually refer to themselves as just that; the Apple family. Now, when you refer to your family, the format is usually “the [surname] family”. Wherever a member of previously mentioned family is present, “Apple” appears at the beginning of their name. Shouldn't this be their surname, as their family title suggests? And thus, wouldn't that mean Equestria works things out similar to the way Japan deals with names (last name first, first name last)? If that's the case (prepare yourself), Twilight Sparkle is actually “Sparkle Twilight”.

Eheh, this is just poking fun, but I thought it was interesting and that I'd mention it anyways. What do you think?

I think it really just depends. I don't think the ponies have a specific system as to whether surnames go at the beginning or the end of the name- it seems to go both ways, and of course, there are those ponies who don't seem to have surnames at all...

Apple Jack's family were travelers. They could of originated in a part of Equestria that followed the Japanese traditions of introducing names, and never changed that mindset as it is how they grew up.

Umm...no. The Apple Family makes perfect sense. The japanese naming theory is absurd, being that it's an American show. They're called the apple family because that's what they are, they couldn't use their surnames because the surnames are what changes, but 'apple' is the recurring theme. Thus 'apple family'.

I think in some cases this sorta makes sense, but really it doesn't seem consistent enough. I mean sure Applejack works for it, but Granny smith doesn't have apple in her name, nor does big mac.

And then theres some of the ponies like Rarity and Fluttershy who don't have but one name.

I think that either ponies last names are just not used normally, or they don't really have them. I've always just thought of them as something that isn't used as often as it is in our world or something.
