gaming Controversial and Unpopular Video Game Opinions.

I have many:

  • Ocarina of Time was a relatively weak entry into the Zelda series, being surpassed both by its predecessors; including the original, Link to the Past and Link's Awakening, and its successors; including Majora's Mask, Windwaker, Twilight Princess and Breath of the Wild.  I don't consider it to be the worst Zelda though, that honor belongs to Spirit Tracks.
  • Final Fantasy 9 was a weak entry into the Final Fantasy series, suffering from tedious combat, lack of character customization options and a plot where the characters do bugger all until the end of the story.  It is easily inferior of Final Fantasy 7.  Of course we all know that Final Fantasy 6 is the best FF, and that Kefka is that best villain.
  • Civilization 5 is the best entry into the series to date, surpassing both Civilization 4 and Civilization 6.  The one-unit-per-tile system implemented for combat was nothing short of brilliant, and global happiness was a solid mechanic for preventing settler span.
  • Paradox grand strategy games are obtuse, bloated and poorly designed.  Paradox's best games are actually Cities: Skylines and the newly released Age of Wonders: Planetfall.
  • The 2017 release of Prey is a absolutely phenomenal video game that easily surpasses all of the Bioshocks as a spiritual successor to System Shock 2.
  • Divinity: Original Sin 2 is easily the best RPG of the past 5 years, if not the past decade, surpassing even the likes of Breath of the Wild.
  • Overwatch is another gaming masterpiece and easily surpasses Team Fortress 2.
  • Heroes of the Storm is superior to both League of Legends and DOTA 2.
  • Super Mario Brothers 3 is still the best Mario game to date, yes even better than Super Mario World.
  • Super Mario 64 is overrated, possessing relatively sparse and empty environments and a repetitive gather the star mechanic.
  • Super Mario Kart 64, on the other hand, still has the best battle mode of any Mario Kart.
  • Not counting the wretched business practices surrounding it (see always online connections and real money auction house), Diablo 3 was a clear improvement over Diablo 2.

Doesn't everyone agree with this? Everyone I know that plays Civ says 5 is the best one.

One Winged Angel is not top 3 Final Fantasy final boss theme

My top three would be

3-Of course OWA’s designated rival: Dancing Mad

2-Born Anew, from FFXIII

1-A game which struggled and had to be remade from scratch. But it debuted my top favorite FF final boss ever:

Spoiler

I'd say that I have a LOT of unpopular opinions related to gaming. I'll list a few of mine: (In no particular order of unpopularity)

I think that Ocarina of Time is better than Majora's Mask

I think the "Five Nights at Freddy's" of games are pretty good horror games. (At least in terms of the "horror" aspect)

I think Fallout 4 is better than Fallout 3

I like Halos 2, 3, ODST, Reach, 4, and 5, and I think that 4 is the best in the series. (Seriously, try to change my mind about that.)

I prefer the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One over the PS3 and PS4

I prefer PC gaming over console gaming

I think the Uncharted series and The Last of Us are EXTREMELY overrated and all of them except the first Uncharted game are bad. (The first one is just mediocre)

I think Killzone is a mediocre FPS series

I think God of War isn't fun or interesting at all and is just a series of mindless button mashers that require almost or zero strategy

I think the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy is better than Super Mario 64

I think Skyrim is good and better than Oblivion and Morrowind

I think Witcher 3 is kind of meh and just a watered down Skyrim (But not bad)

I don't think Superman 64 is that bad

I'd list more, but I'm lazy. :maud:

Same here. I prefer keyboard+mouse (or a joystick for flying) instead of a gamepad. I usually play shooters and adventure games, I think that both of them are better with keyboard + mouse and only flighting games are better with a gamepad (which you can plug into a PC as well), though I do not really play them.

I do not really have a console (a broken first Xbox that I don't bother to fix or use does not count).

I do not like MMOs and games like DOTA and LOL, actually make that most online games. Playing a co-op game with a friend is fun though.

I use arrow keys instead of WASD.

I dislike VR - tried it, the tech just isn't there.

I also dislike motion controls.

I agree for the most part, except I use a controller for Grand Theft Auto and PC platformer ports, like Sonic: Lost World and the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.

Same here. It just seems far easier to just press buttons instead of wailing around a gaming apparatus.

When I was a kid, I had a (probably Chinese) copy of the NES and then a PC. I played everything on a PC (I liked Commander Keen, which is a platformer), so using a gamepad is a bit weird to me. I think Chantelise was a game that made me try using a gamepad (since it was obviously designed for a gamepad and its analog controls), but IIRC playing with a keyboard was still less weird. I sometimes play Recettear (another gamepad-centric game) on my miniPC (GPD WIN) that has a built-in gamepad. It's OK, but no better than a keyboard (better than the tiny keyboard of the GPD though).

I'm sure I have a lot of unpopular opinions, but I can only think of these (some of them taken from previous posts):

  • Ocarina of Time was revolutionary for its time but far from the best Legend of Zelda game ever made, let alone the best game ever made.
  • Both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks were fun and enjoyable Legend of Zelda games.
  • Console gaming > PC gaming. Why? Just because PCs can play games better, doesn't mean your PC can. Such is my case.
  • I can't stand playing games with a keyboard and mouse.
  • Some games should not be made (or shouldn't have been made) for PC.
  • Overall, FPSs feel very same-y and offer practically nothing new other than different enemies or weapons.
  • As of the present, the Switch is better than any other console in the market.
  • Great graphics help make a better game but they don't make the game.
  • Pokémon Ranger was a fun series and it should be brought back.
  • Loot boxes are fine as long as the game doesn't make them necessary to win. After all, you're spending your money because you want to.
  • Fortnite isn't so bad, just too popular for its own good. Still not my cup of tea.
  • The Pokémon main series games keep getting worse for long time fans.
  • Barbie Horse Adventures: Wild Horse Rescue on the PS2 (considered by X-Play to be the worst game ever made at some point) is not a bad game, given it's for children and I loved it as a kid.

I know, very controversial, right? Specially the last one. Let me grind your gears~

Continued:

  • I don't like the Mass Effect games, as in I like none of them. I don't like the way the game plays at all.
  • The only Battlefield game I liked was 4 and even then it was just for the multiplayer.
  • I've been playing Phoenix Wright recently, and I don't exactly see what's going for it. The story really isn't all that good, and its gameplay is as boring as to be expected from a visual novel.
  • Halo: Reach's campaign was... pretty awful. I mainly liked the game for Firefight and the multiplayer. I kind of liked Forge too. But the campaign is very weak.
  • I can't stand the platforming of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World isn't all that great either.
  • I could care less about Mii Gunner now having a Sans costume in Smash Ultimate and I honestly wish people would shut up about it.
  • Halo 2 is probably the second worst entry in the Halo series (to ODST) before Halo 4 came out.
  • Cecil Harvey is the best character from any Final Fantasy game and I could care less about Cloud.

I've got more: Pokemon Sword and Shield look like they are going to be absolute garbage. Game Freak's laziness this time around is on full display.

The fighter's pass for Smash has been mostly disappointing, minus Banjo of course. So glad they announced more characters are in development.

Overwatch has one of the worst progression systems ever. This is why I stopped playing the game entirely.

Bulletstorm is very underrated.

Yoshi's Island is better than all Mario games before it.

Undertale is a terrible RPG. Say what you will about the music, the characters and the story, as an RPG game, it is so bland and simplistic.

Yoshi's Island is one of the very few 2D platformers I actually adore. When people talk about preferring any of the earlier 2D Mario platformer games, I can't ever relate, as they all blend together to me.

While I love pretty much all of the 2D Mario platformers, Yoshi's Island is easily the best of them. It is so unique compared to the others and has such a wonderfully charming style to it. It's soundtrack is one of the best. <3

Battlefield is better than CoD.

Grab Turismo is better than Forza.

Saints Row games are underrated. (and hilarious)

Microtransactions are the spawn of the devil.

The NASCAR games have sucked since EA lost the licensing rights.

Sonic should have died out long ago.

Destiny was overhyped.

And last but most polarizing: PlayStation is better than Xbox. Fight me.:nom:

The last two games were what really defined the series. The series is better when it’s dumb and goofy instead being a blatant GTA clone

Sonic Colors sucks.

Sonic Mania is overrated (great game, but nowhere near as good as 3&K; and the boss battles were nothing like the boss battle in the classic games - the Advance trilogy's boss battles felt more like the ones from the classic games than Mania's did).

Shadow the Hedgehog was fun.

The Sonic series needs to go back to having the worldbuilding, continuity between games, and character interactions that it had in the Adventure era (Adventure 1 through Chronicles).

Oblivion > Skyrim (or at least: vanilla Oblivion > vanilla Skyrim)

Civ 4 will always be the best Civilization game, unless they go back to the same exact mechanics from that game.

The first chapter of Outlast 2 is better than any part of the first Outlast (including Whistleblower), even though the rest of the game is a huge disappointment in comparison to the first one.

FNaF should have ended with FNaF 3 (and it was completely reasonable to believe purple guy = phone guy until Sister Location came out).

Until Dawn isn't scary at all (but is still a great game).

Minecraft is the scariest game ever.

Old School RuneScape should only have gotten bug-fix type updates, and shouldn't have had anything new added to the game (especially the Grand Exchange) other than holiday events.

Pandering to gen 1ers is the most annoying thing about recent Pokemon games (this is coming from someone whose first Pokemon game was Blue version).

Since "Pokémon" is short for "Pocket Monsters," "Pocket Ponies" should have been called "Poképon" - not really a controversial or unpopular opinion, but a unique one (hopefully).

So much Pony, so little time.

I have a few.

  • Dark Souls 2 is the best game in the Souls series and Dark Souls 3 would've been immensely better if it hadn't gutted so many of the improvements it had made
  • Battlefield 4 actually turned out to be the best game in the series despite its lackluster launch
  • The no changes crowd in WoW Classic are ignorant if they expect the game to last long after phase 6. Classic+ or TBC (or both, hopefully) are necessary for its lifespan.

And of course the most long-winded one: People criticize Fallout 4 for its main story but forget how weak and lackluster Fallout NV's story was. Like 4, NV was entirely carried by its side quests, DLC, and cast. Fallout 1, 2, and 3 all had interesting and unique main storylines and 2 and 3 had a wealth of interesting side content as well. Fallout NV really shines as a sandbox RPG and Fallout 4 really shines as a survival game, and with the right mods, Fallout 4 is a much more enjoyable experience overall than Fallout NV.

My boyfriend prefers Civ 4 but agrees that Civ 5 is probably still better as a game, the Civ series just isn't his cup of tea.

I don't think anyone wants no changes, just none for the content phases up to Naxx. I would love to see some of the cut content of vanilla come about after phase 6. And TBC is a real possibility.
