I'm not exactly sure if she could carry a Human of average weight, unless of course she came from a universe where Ponies are stronger than canon Ponies.

The title of the thread is a little misleading.  If Twilight and Rarity can carry a boulder weighing tons, a human on her back would feel like a feather.  The real question is can shy fly with a human on her back.  While it would take more effort than carrying a person on the ground, I'm sure she could do it! 

 

Remember that the pony that serves as the inspiration for Rainbow Dash is Firefly and she can canonically fly with Megan on her back.

Knowing how strong Rainbow Dash is, I'm pretty confident she would be able to carry a human on her back. Just watch Sonic Rainboom. She was able to carry a total of four Wonderbolt ponies whilst pulling out of a supersonic nosedive.

While it may be true that Dash is extremely agile at flying, it doesn't equal to "Rainbow Dash is strong". It's not even confirmed, therefore you can not assume that she can hold a human. Using evidence from previous generations is inaccurate and outdated. Maybe pegasi are light. Maybe the gravitational pull of Equestria is lighter than ours. We don't know.

 

I would be more skeptical and say that Dash may or may not pick up a human. It all comes down to her still ambiguous strength and the weight and size of that human.

Oh yeah! I completely think so. What comes to mind when asked this question is in the Episode "Sonic Rainboom", at the very end when Rainbow Dash saves Rarity, not only does she carry her, but also 3 of the Wonderbolts. Now if you want to get technical, you can go ahead and understand that a Pony would weigh more than a human, even if it didn't, or was close, there were 4 total that Rainbow Dash was carrying. So yes, I think Rainbow Dash could easily carry a human!

You have to remember to measure the size of the other animals and plants relative to how big the ponies are, they would be far smaller than real ponies, and thus, most likely unable to carry a human on their backs.

This is an interesting question but the assumption being made are flawed, if not misleading about the nature of Rainbow Dash's character, either due to a misunderstanding or just blind loyalty to the pegasus.

 

Rainbow Dash is strong no doubt and exceptionally moreso than the other Mane 6, with probably the exception of Applejack where credit's due.  On the other end, Rainbow is also very athletic along with obviously being fast, for a pegasus that is since saying she's fast in that context would simply be redundant. People seem to overestimate her own strength at times and mistake her athleticism for her strength. That is not the case at all. Good illustrations of this are found easily in the NBA, a point guard like Chris Paul is easily considered fast and athletic, but he is by no means exceptionally stronger than other players. Strong for a point guard would be like Derrick Rose or Ty Lawson. Rainbow is certainly like that in a lot of regards, she has above average strength to complement her speed and athleticism.

 

But the case could easily be made that there are plenty of other male pegasi, like the ones who mock her and obviously Snowflake, as well as other stallions like Big MacIntosh are clearly stronger than her. She's built for speed, agility and athleticism as a racer, not as a body builder.

 

That said the ponies we see focused in the show are "little ponies" arguably, not even regular ponies, like say the Royal Canterlot Guards, or even Big MacIntosh. And that's not even factoring in the fact that ponies on average are smaller than horses, nor the possibility that pegasi may well be much lighter than regular ponies. If she were a pegasus horse, then this would be a different story. 

 

With all that factored in I would have to say that Rainbow Dash would not be able to carry a human on her back assuming its an "average" adult that's of regular weight (heaven forbid that she be asked to carry the average American ). I don't make this judgment out of spite towards Rainbow, just based upon what I think would be a reasonable measure of her abilities.

So long as the human in question is not grossly overweight, I can kinda see Rainbow being able to carry a human. After all, as several other posters pointed out, she was able to catch four Ponies in free fall. However, as yet another poster said, the human on her back would get in the way of her wings, leaving her to carry said human in her forehooves.

You raise some interesting points.  G1 doesn't necessarily translate to G4.  But throughout the MLP:FiM series, ponies are shown to have amazing power for their size.  Equestria may have lesser gravity than earth, but not too much less because objects fall at a similar rate.  There may be other differences to physics that are harder to pin down. 

 

My personal conclusion is that Rainbow Dash can fly with a human on her back in Equestria.  But it's also possible humans themselves would exhibit enhanced strength of their own in Equestria due to the differences between our worlds.

I've looked into the weight reduction tricks of birds and the like.  The pegusi could have half the weight of other breeds of ponies.  That would make the weight Rainbow Dash was carrying still over 500 lbs (more than twice the weight of the average American).
