Why was Rarity allowed to join the Best Young Fliers competition?

To quote Pinkie Pie: It's where the all the greatest pegasus fliers get together and show off their different flying styles.

 

This is probably more of a nitpick than a complaint as the simple answer could be that ANY pony who could fly could join, but seeing as how only 16 pegasi out of hundreds, maybe thousands,were in the competition, it gives the impression that only the pegasi that were at least somewhat well known for their skill could enter. So how did wings for less than a day Rarity manage to just get less than a few hours before the contest?

Simply because it was convenient to the plot. I guess you could try and come up with rationalizations, but there would be no way to tell which one is the correct one.

Probably simply anypony can ENTER, but only the greatest pegasi dare to do it, considering that it is a competition and nopony likes been humiliated. Just like with normal competitions, usually only really talented and brave people enter these.

Well I think you may have nailed it right there. Only the most confident fliers would enter so they don't wind up embarrassing themselves.

The Pragmatic Answer: Show me ONE other pony that uses giant friggin' butterfly wings to fly. (No? Can't do it?) I'd say that was a pretty unique "style", yeah? Not to mention with the amount of gall Rarity has, she probably could probably talk her way into fort knox. (Or the pony equivalent)

 

The Practical Answer: Because Hasbro probably wanted them to put their strange butterfly wing toys on as much of a pedastal as possibly so kids would buy them.

I think it's because, the talented fliers are allowed to join the competition. If Rarity joined the competition, she would not want to be embarrassed if she lost.

Yeah, that part totally slipped my mind. I was skipping around to parts of the episode for part of a scootaloo/rainbow dash fic I'm making where Scoots is present at the BYF competition so I completely forgot that those guys suggested she join

It is the Best Young Fliers competition. I'm guessing that any pony under a certain age can join, but Rarity was either granted exception because she is less experienced at flying or legitimately young enough. There might have only been one or two Pegasi from each flight class participating, meaning a small number could represent a large population.

I dunno, maybe there were different categories? I mean, there must be more to flying than just speed and moves. Maybe there was a style/flair category that she was entered in? Or maybe she just flashed her wings at the judges and they let her in. (Wow, change 'wings' with a different word and that sentence takes on whole new meaning...)

I think it's to prove that the pegasi aren't racist against the other races. As long as anyone can join; they would let them join no matter the race. Since Rarity had wings at the moment she could enter. Otherwise I think it would prove that the pegasi are racist and would give them a bad image.

That's the reason for many of the things we question about the show. They don't call them plot holes for nothing. :-)

The ones who told Rarity she should enter were workers at a weather factory. Unless the company that runs the factory is also responsible for the Best Young Fliers Competition, their "permission" wouldn't help convince the organizers to let Rarity enter.

Rarity was showing off to more or less very passing pegesus. thanks to word of mouth i'd imagine by the time the game started more than just the weather factory pegesi knew of her. And of course its probably known that Rarity (along with Dash) is friends with Twilight Sparkle who in turn is the Student of Celestia who is the one who crowns the winner.

 

I'd imagine if they were neighsayers about Rarity entering, pretty sure Celestia could just overrule there decisions

Well recall that Twilight used magic to give Rarity those wings. Those pegasi must have thought that Rarity would win the most beautiful pegasus contest. They assumed that Rarity naturally had those wings and Rarity simply flew in and showed off her alluring wings.

They let her join simply because they knew she was best pony.

 

Lol, seriously though, I don't think you had to be a certain mold (other than a young flier, of course) to join. You probably just signed up and they let you in, and when they saw she had wings, boom, she was a young flier and could join.
