Organic Gems

I've come to the conclusion that the only way there can be so many gemstones in Equestria is that they REPRODUCE!

I mean, Rarity can find simply hundreds of them in just one afternoon, and yet she isn't rich, and there are just too many out there! Don't you think that by now she would atleast have to dig deeper? Also, spike eats them, so it only makes sense they are biological.

They are probably protist beings, like sea weed. They are very simple life forms wich are basically no more than just a group of identical cells connected, having no organs and stuff.

I know that Rarity could probably do better by farming them, but i'd say that there are way to much of them in the wild for it to be actually much more gain. I bet few ponies actually seek these, so they aren't endangered

EDIT: And as it was pointed out, remember Pinkie was raised in a rock FARM! It all makes sense now.

That's... actually rather interesting.

But Rarity might not farm them because they r extremely difficult to farm. I think on Earth some mushrooms r really hard 2 farm.

I have been bothered by something. Why do the gems come out of the ground already cut and polished? Has anyone ever seen an uncut diamond? It looks like a piece of broken car glass! People used to smuggle them by hiding them in bags of rock salt. Dissolve the salt in water, and only the diamonds remain!

Yeah, that is true... WAIT, DON'T GO ANY FURTHER, you are degrading the worth of my treasure...

Why are there so many gems, and how does it not make Rarity more wealthy than she currently is? It is weird, especially after that one episode where she is ponynapped by the Diamond Dogs. Maybe gems do grow, since they are edible and/or organic... to dragons.

Great adventuring for great treasures!....Except when I'm hurt...

Gems are minerals, and a few are formed by chemical precipitation and crystallization of gem- and mineral-forming elements. This means that provided that the local earth has the proper elemental makeup, gem-type minerals can essentially "reproduce" on their own!

^That was a highly elementary explanation there with some assertions that may be false, but I think the general gist is true. Essentially, if Equestria's chemical composition is right... Gems ain't living!

What happens after Spike eats gems? Does he wreck the sewage system of Ponyvillle? Does he produce building material?

Seeing how Rarity generously applies them to even her lowest prestige outfits, I don't think that precious gems have nearly the same value in Equestria as they do in our universe. Of course, some are more valuable than others (like Spike's ruby and the Blue Sapphires that Rarity was to protective of).

The Diamond Dogs' obsession with gems seems to be an exception. They're either very dedicated collectors or are trying to get rich quick by selling massive amounts of them.

That's really all there is to say on the matter.

I just think the Diamond Dogs are a magpielike species that sort of likes to collect shiny things, which exclusively fixates on gems, regardless of value or worth. They don't seem intelligent enough to want to use those gems to get rich or anything, as they do not appear to have a real society.

Also, I don't think the gems are organic. But it is an interesting idea to propose.

Wow...that's really interesting. I guess I never really thought about the existence of the gems on that deep of a level. I just sort of ran with it. Haha. I like the of organic gems, though. That's really interesting. Part of me is wondering how they would reproduce or multiply, if that's the case? My brain is latching onto the idea of some kind of form of mitosis. Split in two, and each half forms a new gem? Something like that.

That makes a lot of sense. If there is an infinite, renewable supply of them, then they would be much less valuable than they are here. Which would explain why Rarity isn't rich.

I can't make signatures.

Sooo... yeah

To say nothing of the use of diamonds for industrial capacities or gold, silver and copper for conducting material.
