I -think- it was the first Castlevania. I slept over at a friend's house a lot when I was young (like... mid-80s) and her brother was always trying to get us to play video games with him. I remember he had Castlevania and wanted us to play it and be creeped out because back then that was considered a horror game. I could have played something in an arcade in passing before then but I am not sure.
