Today I was kinda bored and I was thinking about this: Princesses Celestia and Luna control the Sun and the Moon, thus the day and the night. If they can control the lenght of a day, they could also decide on the lenght of a week, a month, a year, etc., all in all, ponies have control on "time", unlike humans. So I guess an Equestrian year wouldn't be 365.25 days long, that would be too much trouble for nothing; why not 360 days? Or even 300 or 400 days? That would only be logical for a species that possess such power on its environment.

What would the Equestrian calendar look like? How many days a year? How many months (and what would be their names? Julius Ceasar didn't exist and couldn't give his name to July)? How many days a week? How many hours a day? Etc.

ENLIGHTEN ME, BRONIES :D

I have no answers for those questions, I'm stumped too. Also to add a question, in Equestria Girls the portal can only be opened every 30 moons and that why Twilight has a time constraint, but if Celestia and Luna control the cycle why couldn't they quickly do 30 moons to open it back up if Twilight got stuck?

This is how  I see it:

I am guessing that instead of 12 months of 28 - 30 days, Equss may have 4 months named after the seasons (Winter, Summer, Fall, Spring) of 60 - 90 days. So I'm guessing:

Winter: 60 days

Spring: 80 days

Summer: 90 days

Fall: 70 days

but those are just my estimates. My guess is a year on Equss can not end until all 300+ days have passed. The one problem is that the only way life on Equss could exist is if the days stay on a tight schedule. If the sun/ moon does not rise:

Sun not rising: Crops will not grow causing starvation because the majority of the planets population are herbivores. Also the carnivores will die off because their food supply (the herbivores) are dying off.

Moon not rising: Widespread flooding because of Tides and stuff. ^^^ now I see why Luna was in Celestia's shadow ^^^

Well clearly Celestia and Luna must follow some sort of schedule so that the lenght of a day or a moon cycle is always the same...

The Equestrian society would get fucked up pretty fast if they started to play with "time".

Also, how long is a moon cycle? I first thought that 100 moons = 1 year (because of the Apple Family Reunion) but that would make a cycle of 3-4 days, which makes no sense (but again it is a world of magical ponies ).

Don't forget the first line of "Winter Wrap-Up": they clearly have months! :)

But I wonder if it really suggests a 12 months year (3 per season)... Maybe the seasons are, like you said, not the same length: almost all episodes surely seem to happen during spring or summer!

oh yeah forgot about that.... hmm maybe they do have 12 months. Really the question is what are they called.

Equus didn't have a roman empire age so they couldn't have July, August, June, ect. because most of the months of the American Calender are named after Roman figures.

I am guessing some of the months could be named after ancient Equustrian (the populants of Equus) figures like Starswirl the Bearded, Celestia, and Luna. Also one thing that bothered me was "What year is it in Equestria"

This is what I came up with:

Episode 1 took place in the year 999 A.B. (After banishment)

S4 E1 took place in the year 3 A.N.N (After Nightmare Moon)

Well thats just what I have been calling the years.

Luna and celestia only control the cycle in equestria, and the portal most likely runs off of the sun/moon cycle of the alternate world. Plus fast-forwarding e cycle by nearly 2 years worth of moons could easily have put equestria in massive amounts of jeopardy.

Personally I prefer to start counting the years from Nightmare Moon's banishment, making the series happen between the years 1000-1001. But I think the ponies would have more likely set the year 0 on the founding of Equestria... anyway, we can olny speculate!

Now, let's say there are indeed 12 months. How do we call them? I like the idea of using important Equustrian figues!

Ideas:

-Celestia (June: longest days of the year)

-Luna (December: shortest days of the year)

-Star Swirl the Bearded

-Chancellor Puddinghead

-Princess Platinum

-Commander Hurricane

-Smart Cookie

-Clover the Clever

-Private Pansy

-Discord

-King Sombra (for a gloomy month like November)

(Smart Cookie, Clover the Clever and Private Pansy may look like secondary figures, but they're the ones that actually found the meaning of harmony!)

Discord should be April, and have 'Day of Pranking', which would be the pony equivalent of April Fool's Day.

Clover the Clever = clover = St-Patrick = March? XD

Also, I feel like Chancellor Puddinghead should get a summer month (it would suit her Pinkie Pieish personality)

And for Princess Platinum, definitely winter.

That does make sense

and maybe Clover the Clever could be like march.

Also I don't think all of the figures would be Equestrians remember I said Equustrian figures not Equestrian figures. Because since all the kingdoms are relatively close to each other they share the same calender.

If they had ponyville/canterlot have the good weather most of the year and only 2 months of winter, I would feel for the other side of the globe where things were the opposite.

Yeah, that would make sense, I guess.

But I say we stick with Equestrian figues since the show provides almost no information about the other kingdoms. Let's just say that every kingdom has the same number of months, but with the names of their own figures!

Why not have months named after mythological creatures such as Cerebus for October (when they celebrate Nightmare Night). We could also have windy May be called Breezy, off the Breezies. The creatures have to be the same around surrounding kingdom.

maybe a month after the griffons, and July could be Crystalis, after the Crystal Heart and Kingdom. :D

well..in the human world it still takes 24 hours so it wouldnt matter if they did. The other world would still be 24 hours

I actually thing that an Equus day is slightly longer or shorter because the sun and moon orbit the planet not the planet orbiting the sun.
