WTF

how I come up with good names: think of a phrase a few sentances long, find the two most iconic words in the phrase, and try to find a pun.

but this is insane. how many ponies can you name "Shadow"

IDK, just something I noticed...

How do you ponies come up with your OC names?

The word "Shadow" is one of those "cool and stand-out" words, which is perhaps why everypony loves "Shadow".

With my OC's.........im very specific with there names.   The names I give them, represent who they are, what they resemble and significance.   My main OC, is Thunderwing, which I can go in depth, but rather not do that.    The rest of my 25 OC's, they have there significances.

Example:

Name: Timaeus

Title: Prince Timaeus, King Timaeus (before Celestia & Luna's reign), Temporalus, and God of Time

Age: 5000

Representation:

- Science

-----Galileo Theory of Timaeus (Involving Time)

-----Astrology (The study of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies in the belief that they have an influence on the course of natural earthly occurrences and human affairs - If you look at the Horoscopes, it involves Time, like Taurus is from April 24 to May 24, then comes Gemini, etc.)

- History

-----Civilizations *in order* (Mayan, Roman, Spanish)

-----Time Period (Ancient Roman,Greek,Egyptian)

- Mythology

------Chronos

------Viracoocha

------Odin

........I can go on forever, but that's just 1/4 of his bio.

B.) I always think about my characters most defining personality traits when I decide on their names. I figure their name should reflect those, so I research terms that correlate to those traits, and I try to make their names work on a symbolic level. Once I choose their name, then I define their skills and talents.

I guess I'm a bit odd when it comes to this, though. Most define skills/talents/gimmicks first.

I made up SkyStorm on the top of my head :D when I looked around the forums a bit, I realised there were heaps of pegasi with the word sky in their name! But I didn't want to change it :P

I come up with my names by thinking of a two word concept or item, then tweaking it a bit, usually changing the sound and adding a "us" to the end.

Usually, I decide on the OCs personality and then choose the phrase from that. These are a couple that I just made up in the past 5 minutes.

Quantum Mechanics: Quantus Maxinus

Solar Eclipse: Sollus Exlipsus

Fender Guitar: Fendix Guitius

it sounds a little different than most of the names out there, but I like it.

I like to think of names that can be seen as sort of famous or easily notable. Like, the Kitty Hawk could be the name for an amateur flyer, as the Kitty Hawk was one of the first planes built by the Wright Brothers.

Other than that, I just try to find words that sound well together, like Star Script or something like that.

The extent of my interest is in things that don't exist.

Or, at least, things that aren't in the basic man's senses

I think of cool words and match powers to them.

Rift: can travel using he rift

Chronos: can alter the time fabric

Ace: a pro flier

Storm: can withstand any storm

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it save equistria with its five candy coloured friends and shoot rainbows at bad guys using their necklaces and tiara unless you're celestia

I usually use terms relating to that OC's talent, though not always. Baryon is a clinic doctor, Secant is a mathematician, Synapse and Inkblots are respectively a psychiatrist and psychologist, Fuselage is an airship pilot, etc. I usually dodge common phrases in words "Shadow", "Night", "Light", "Flare", and "Shade".

For back stories, I don't like going with overused tropes, either, such as dead parents, being an orphan, outcast in society, etc. It's too dark and flat.

going to assume it's an alicorn oc...

Anyway, so what if an OC doesn't have an original name? Not every OC should have a name like Miraak or Fuaesae or something. Let people be unoriginal.

Because I'm going to say it right now; Shadow Stalker and Shadow Dash and Shadow Blast sound like awesome names. I'm going to make an OC called Shadow Down now.

Coming up with unique names for original characters has always been a challenge for me. I usually look at the pony's colors and design and try to come up with a name that way. For instance, one time, someone wanted me to help them name their OC. Since the OC was yellow, and their hair was a big swirly, I came up with "Lemon Swirl"
Didn't expect them to like it :P

The problem is that names such as shadow are so generic it tricks your mind into only thinking of that one word, for me at least my names have always been off the top of my head or from an already created character.

Oh my gosh I didn't know there were that many Shadows.... Oh I see Shadow Falle (I wish I knew how to make that weird french apostrophe that goes over the letter)! I think its the 2nd one...

and OC names are not my strong point... the only ones that are completely original for me (No one else is using them)

are Times and Incognito. Everyone keeps beating me to the good ones...

Miraak and Fuaesae aren't really "pony" names. They sound like it's coming from a fantasy roleplay.

I actually don't care about the OCs, just how they're executed. If the player types up a horrible and grammatically incorrect post, I'm not even going to read it. If it's a decent and interesting one, I might just like your OC...even if it's an alicorn.

I concur.....that is my focus as well, when it comes to OC's.  Even when i come up with one, I try my best to be detailed as possible with the Name (focus more on an actual/ancient name), Representations, and a well-written bio of the character.   When people just write short "mary-sue" characters, it just blows my mind, b/c that's like a lack of creativity, IMO.

I'm not really creative with names...it took me a while after I created my ponysona to come up with a name and it's not very unique.

My cider brings all the ponies to the yard and they're like its better than yours, damn right it's better than yours. I can teach you, but I have to charge

Coming up with a character's name can be pretty tricky but fun.

-As for me, determining the prime word first - for instance my OC: Inkwell Oeuvre. Since ponies' names are usually quite obvious to what they do or reflects their personality, hence I started with either the word 'book' or 'author'

-Use thesaurus or Oxford dictionary - providing me with theses several words; octavo, fictive, oeuvre, codex, lexicon, tome, vade mecum, etc.

-Choosing which one I like the most - my choice lies on 'Oeuvre' giving my OC a European name-ish, similar to Fleur De Lis

-Then do some research in the forums, and Inkwell rhymes rather nicely with Oeuvre.

Kinda bit lengthy procedure but I'm happy with it.

I think of names from the things around me, mainly from video games or shows :3 Recently I helped a friend name his two characters, Heilos Wave, and Seras Kale. Heilos came from the Heilos one power thingy-majigger from Fallout New Vegas and Seras came from Seras on Hellsing Ultimate x3
