general media A character you thought was a different gender than what they were

For a split second in MLP FiM, I though Zecora was a dude when she made an appearance with that cloak of hers. A split second. XD Then I realized that 96% of the characters are female. haha

Some of the anime-based characters are understandable. Especially FE:A's Libra - in fact, a number of the support conversations play humor with his gendered appearance. Virion, the army's predictable woman-chaser, ends up finding himself unnervingly allured by him even AFTER being made clear that Libra is male.

Samus Aran. My first encounter with her was in Super Smash Bros, and I was so confused and dissapointed when I found out my favorite character was a girl! My brother made fun of me to no end for that!

That was disappointing for me too when i younger

Tell me about it! I practically stopped playing as her for a while! Ah, the innocent sexism of youth...

True, even if Fox is like the cheapest character ever besides Sonic!

Say WHAT, now? :okiedokielokie: No character could ever be cheaper than Zelda with her air-juggling fireballs that noobs like to spam ad nauseum.

OT: I always thought Tails from the Sonic cartoon was a girl. Given how he was voiced, can anyone really blame me?

Anybody played A Link Between Worlds? Yuuga, full stop. I don't care that it's constantly referred to as he. I don't care if they were purposefully going for an effeminate style. Have you seen his design? Have you heard his voice? Let me tell you, I'm making aneffort to make sure I refer to him as a he in here. No, I refuse to believe Yuuga is, or ever was, a guy. He is a she. Period.

Also, I thought Babs Seed was a guy. The haircut. The voice. Having been the subject of bullying, I'd say even her style of tormenting the Crusaders is boyish. I know it's ostensibly a little girl's show, but I really think they missed the chance to add.more males to the cast, seeing as there's so paltry few. Or maybe they were makings a point that girls could be bullies too. I don't know, I still check myself when referring to her.

I was lucky enough to watch the first episode of "Ouran High School Host Club" cold, without knowing a single detail about it. It took me a few minutes to figure out Haruhi's secret. Not that Haruhi was actually tryng to keep the secret. It just sort of worked out that way. I figured it out by the second "Light-bulb".

LOL!

"Ouran High School Host Club" is now one of my very favorite anime. I love the live action series too. I still drive people crazy by referring to instant coffee as "Commoner Coffee"!

Apart from alot of cosplayers and people in real life, there's some characters I thought was a different gender such as..

  • Nanaba from SnK, thought she was a guy
  • Ciel from Kuroshitsuji, saw him in the pink dress, thought he was a she

To all those talking about Libra from FEA, men who look like women is a mainstay of the series, and many of them poke fun at it (usually just the womanizer of the group hitting on them and them being all "yo, I'm a dude").

I distinctly remember thinking Lucian from FE7 was a girl.

By the time Awakening came out, I was used to it and figured Libra was a man.

Signature now 99% less edgy!

I thought that some tiger named Pura from the Crash Bandicoot series was a female, but he isn’t. Then again, Crash Boom Bang aside, I think Naughty Dog has made Pura’s gender unconfirmed. This also applies for a polar bear named Polar. I may also used to think that Ripper Roo is female, but I can't remember.

I got a lot of the character’s genders wrong in the Pokémon series. Silver, Bugsy and Tate are just some of them. Although the biggest screw up I can think of is that I thought that Colress was a girl. Not only that, but I first thought that Colress would be the new Professor of Unova… until I checked out the trailer a second time, only to find out that’s he’s male and a Scientist for Team Plasma. xP

I thought that Samus was a male, until my brother pointed it out. People in the Smash Bros. fandom seem to lash out on others for calling Samus a male, which is kind of sad because not everyone who plays SSB is a Nintendo nerd… >_> This also applies for Sheik.

Kind of off-topic (and kind of relevant at the same time), but I've actually come across numerous people who refuse to believe Sheik is female. Like, they know that Sheik is Zelda in disguise, but they make up the most backward-ass scenarios to justify the thought that Zelda somehow transforms into a male whenever she becomes Sheik. The reason for this? They desperately want to maintain their headcanons that Link and Sheik have some kind of yaoi thing going on.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. -_-

50% of anime characters nowadays

I also used to think Zelos was a girl, then I noticed on the cover that he didn't have any breasts, then I saw him in the game it's self and boy did he scream man. I also used to think Genis was a girl too, but that was probably the voice and the long hair, now I can see him as a bit more masculine

And of course I thought Samus was a dude. That one was definitely the biggest surprise

Tons, and tons and tons.  A lot from My little pony, at that.  To be honest, I never really cared too much about the genders of the characters in shows and video games.

Sorry for continuing to be off-topic, but I personally see Sheik as male, simply because Sheik is a costume meant to be seen as male, like if a girl was playing Romeo from Romeo and Juliette in a play.  It's a matter of perspective whether you see him as male or female for that reason.

If you see him as male by way of gender, that's fine. But sex? I'm sorry, but I flat out refuse to believe that Zelda grows male parts every time she dons the traditional garb of the Sheikah.

I was just thinking about this after I made my post. Yeah, I also saw Birdo partnered up with Yoshi and the fan art of them being a "thing" and then I read up about Birdo and....she..was HE! Oh Japan..

I think the two are a cute couple! ^-^ Japan slash lol!

It's strange, Frieza never used to confuse me; I knew he was a guy from the start because he was referred to with masculine pronouns before, during, and obviously after his first appearance.  I noticed the appearance and female voice was strange, but so were a ton of other things in the show.  And yet, lately, I find myself occasionally misspeaking and using feminine pronouns when referring to him despite never actually having that confusion in the first place.

Seabreeze from MLP.

This for me as well.  Nothing about that appearance or voice seemed male to me.
