In the latest episode, spike saves a phoenix egg and at the end of the episode, it hatches. Now, this seems to be set up for a future canon character, but this could just turn out to be another owl incident. The owl character (And for the life of me i cant remember her name) in the episode 'Owls well that ends well' was the main focus of the episode, obviously. And it was presented in a manner that suggested she would be returning. Now, to my knowledge, she hasn't been in any episodes since. So, whats stopping them from scrapping peewee as well.

I don't think the baby pheonix is going to become a canon character.

We might she him in a future episode for a brief moment, but I think he was mainly used to show give a clean ending to the show and to show that Spike learned a lesson ~

Eh, well I guess that a simple acknowledgement of their existence will suffice in this case, I mean you can't really expect them to cut much character time for secondary characters.

The pets are always ignored, in fact none of the upcoming episodes seem like they will involve them again in any way for the remainder of the season. But who knows, maybe in season 3 we'll get more pet episodes, or not(at least a few).

I think it'll be the same case as Tank (Rainbow Dash's pet turtle from 'May the Best Pet Win'). It's a canon thing, but it's not referenced much in later episodes.

I think Gummy is pretty much the canon pet with the most screen-time. Opalescence is a close second.

Same for Winnona as well, I've only seen her in 2 episodes with Applejack. Other than that you guys are forgetting about angel Fluttershy's Main pet, She/he gets as much airtime(maybe a bit more) than gummy.

Angel Bunny and Opal are about the only pets you really see regularly throughout the episodes. Winona seems to only be around when she's herding stuff. The only one I'm really disappointed in not seeing enough is Owlowicious (y u so confusing to write name?).

 

I mean, aside from Fluttershy, Twilight is the one you see in her house most often. Off the top of my head we haven't been in AJ's house all that often, and, considering she lives on an Apple Orchard / Farm, it's not really surprising to not have seen Winona too much.

 

We haven't seen Rainbow Dash in her house all that often, and in fact, I don't think we've seen her at home after May the Best Pet Win, so not surprised we haven't see Tank either.

 

Again, Pinkie's not seen at home in her room all that much either (Party for One and Pinkie Keen are the two I can remember off the top of my head).

 

In fact, we've seen Rarity's, Fluttershy's and Twilight's house the most out of the six, so it makes sense for Angel and Opal to be seen the most, but Owlowicious should be seen significantly more, considering we're at Twilight's house a lot. Even if she just perched on a branch or something inside, I'd like to see her more.

Remember that Owlowiscious wasn't the only pet/side character that was introduced formally. We first saw Gummy in episode 15, and he has returned regularly ever since. Same thing with the Cakes' babies, they've appeared (I think) twice since Baby Cakes.

 

All I'm trying to say is that there are other possibilities. Sure, Owlowiscious and Tank were never heard from again (besides a quick Owlowiscious cameo in May The Best Pet Win), but the future of Peewee is unwritten at this point.

Not to be picky, but I think you mean Peewee won't become a secondary or frequently recurring character. Peewee is canon by virtue of being on the show and acknowledged explicitly at the end as taking part in the continuity.
