Didn't you ever read

When you were younger?

Do you really want to be stuck in limbo living the same day over and over and crowding around a tv replaying the same show and commercials every hour on the hour?

Dr Who, 1963-current (yes I know it's not continuous). Would I like to see mlp:fim go on forever? Yes. Is it easy? No.

New characters, new places, taking a year or two off, all can help the show stay fresh. Better to take a break than to produce something of a lower quality. Even losing a character or two could prove helpful. Imagine the Mane 6 if Rainbow Dash becomes a Wonderbolt and has to move to Cloudsdale, and Rarity gets a major break in Manehattan. The show could skip ahead to a new generation of ponies, where Applebloom is Granny Smith's age.

There are plenty of things to do, it's just a matter of avoiding burnout.

That could work, just look at the Pokemon Special Manga, far more interesting than the anime, changing protagonist constantly and reusing the old ones in team-ups or MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH later

Well the MLP franchise in general can keep going on. But I wouldn't want Friendship is Magic to keep playing forever. They could run out of ideas easily if they stick with the same generation forever. If FiM went on forever it could potentially go the SpongeBob route which I don't want to happen. Like in Pokémon, MLP should always come out with new generations every while to keep the franchise fresh.

I really doubt so, I don't want to see MLP falling in the same clichés from Pokémon where there are now 17 years of Ash in the same fight for becoming a Pokémon master and it never happened, the show could fall in too much filling, and too much filling drops que plot quality.
