Can Pegasi Walk On Water?

Eloquence

Recommended Posts

We all know that pegasi can walk on clouds, we've seen it countless times throughout the series and have been explicitly told this several times as well. I've been thinking about this fact lately (for whatever reason) and it occurred to me that clouds are made up of vaporized water, meaning that logically, water in its liquid form should be even easier to walk on. I don't believe this has been seen in canon, we've seen pegasi swimming but never trotting across a body of water. However, there is canon evidence to support this theory.

In The Cutie Mark Chronicles, Fluttershy's flashback shows her young self nearly falling to her death, being saved just in time by being caught by a flock of butterflies. Of course, if this were to happen to a human, for example, they would fall right through the butterflies and die. So why doesn't this happen to Fluttershy?

Because butterflies are denser than clouds, and pegasi can walk on clouds and everything denser than clouds, including water.

So there you have it. Pegasi are Jesus.

Well, basically what you are saying is that clouds are denser than Pegasi and so that would make them unable to swim in water. But we have seen Rainbow Dash swim. So, that does not work.

I believe walking on clouds has nothing to do with density. It probably is just a perk of being a Pegasus. I guess.

I doubt it. The writers sure would have used it in the show by now if they Pegasi could walk on water.

Maybe Pegasus are like birds and have hollow bones, or something. I doubt that they can walk on water though because to me it just doesn't seem to fit in with them. I understand that clouds are just vaporized water, and it would make more sense if they could also walk on water if they could walk on clouds, but I can't really see it happening. I think the only reason that Pegasus are able to walk on clouds is because there home is in the sky. Maybe some magic is at play with that in the series.

Well, unless there would be a purpose behind, I doubt the writers would introduce that concept. I mean, it makes sense lore-wise and plot-wise why pegasi can walk on clouds. Hell; there's a whole city built on clouds.

As far as water is concerned, unless it would be in the plot, I don't see it happening.

The writers will never go for the whole "walking on water" thing. Yes I agree it does make sense but again if your taking density into account then your saying pegasi are lighter than water vapor. Since water vapor is always present in the sky (no matter how small the amount) then your saying they would float right up until water vapor Is no longer present.

Besides if they DID have pegasi walking on water they may get some backlash from the community. (ya know, Jesus and the bible)

Maybe being able to walk on clouds is a perk of being able to control the weather? We've seen Rainbow Dash swim before, so I don't think they would be able to walk on water.

As for the butterflies, I guess the sheer amount of butterflies, and how light a filly pegasus like Fluttershy would be is why they were able to catch her.

I would say they could not walk on water because it is liquid and not gaseous.

We see it takes tremendous effort for them to manipulate water in liquid form in Hurricane Fluttershy.

I don't believe this has been seen in canon, we've seen pegasi swimming but  Pegasi are Jesus.

The primary identifying characteristic of Jesus was his resurrection from the dead, not walking on water.

I don't think they can:

My guess is that their pegasus magic can allow them to walk on clouds (so they can control the weather), but not the water.

Not necessarily. Pegasi ability to walk on clouds is attributed to innate magic, meaning water being in vapor form may be required for it to work. In fact, the necessity of magic in flight may mean that Pegasi don't have hollow bones and aren't even more proficient swimmers than the other races.

I concur.  Yet, if the writers do that in the future episodes, that would be a surprise.

Looks like I've got some responses to answer to :P

@@boiteporte,@@Old Fluttershy,

Noooooot quite what I was going for. Well, actually not what I was going for at all :P

Pegasi can fly and walk on clouds in the first place due to their magic. I don't think they're any lighter than other ponies, and certainly not less dense than water vapor. The question is whether or not that magic extends to other substances less dense than they are, like water, whether their magic is cloud-specific or not.

And this is just a little theory, I don't think we'll ever see it in the show, because it would create a lot of questions and because of people getting offended like Old Fluttershy said. I realize that this is major over-analysis of pony magic, but over-analysis can be fun ;)

I don't think they can:

Now THIS is an argument I can get behind :P

I honestly don't even remember what episode this is from, but it doesn't surprise me that it's in the series somewhere. Again, wasn't actually expecting to see anypony walk on water in the show.

So maybe they can only walk on things that float in the air? This would also explain the butterflies (in a way that doesn't use the "it was a plot device" cop-out, even if it almost definitely is a plot device). I could get behind that, since it leaves them with a magic that is overall intrinsically connected to the air. Actually, I quite like the sound of that...

The primary identifying characteristic of Jesus was his resurrection from the dead, not walking on water.

(That was a joke)

No, I don't think they can, at least I hope not. I don't like the idea of them walking on water personally :P

I feel like it would just overlap the fact that they are the only ones (other than alicorns) to walk on clouds.

If I had to wager a guess, i'd say pegasus magic changes clouds atomic structures to allow them to make them denser. They can not only stand on clouds, but manipulate them into building structures. I don't think that relates to water; that would require them to be light enough to negate surface tension, and even without bones, they'd still be too heavy. You'd have to be made of antimatter...

The primary identifying characteristic of Jesus was his resurrection from the dead, not walking on water.

If that statement is true, then why is this lizard called the "Jesus Lizard" just because it runs across water?

But as for the topic at hand, barring them using the same tactic of running across water as the aforementioned lizard (and this may or may not be feasible for a fast enough pegasus), I'm gonna say no. Pegasi cannot walk or stand on water.

I think it's certainly possible given the magic that their hooves must be imbued with and water walking itself is also something we've seen in the canon with Twilight.

However, I don't think it's universal. As with most magic in Equestria, I think it's highly tailored to the individual. Fluttershy was able to "sit" on a swarm of butterflies as reflected with her innate connection with animals and nature.

So presumably a pegasus who was a sailor or who's passion centered around aquatics might have such an ability.

And yes, this supports evidence that Jesus was, in fact, not only a brony but an Alicorn.  B)

You do have a point, but I think you're looking a bit further into this than the show. :P I'm pretty sure pegasi can only walk on clouds, since nothing has been said about them and water.

That actually makes a lot of sense. Sort of like how all earth ponies are strong, but very few can pummel boulders into dust with their bare hooves like Maud Pie. It even explains the butterflies, and fits really well into what we've already seen of the equestrian magic system.
