How would you feel about episodes WITHOUT the mane 6 or Ponyville?

How would you feel about episodes that focus away from ANY of the mane 6 and puts ponyville on the back-burnner for other characters and parts of Equestria. I always thought the show could do better at fleshing out its side characters and world, So I'd be all for it. Plus, it could allow for slightly darker, more complex stories.

Oh episodes about other characters could be awesome personally I don't want the show to get dark though. I'm happy with it staying as the innocent kids show it is.

As interesting as an idea that is, I believe if the show were to attempt something like that it would have to be careful. Not only do we have the Mane 6, but we also have Spike, the CMC, Celestia, Luna, Discord, Cadence, & Shining Armor that have had important roles on more than one occasion.

 

Expanding that that to more characters would potentially dilute the franchise. I mean look at Sonic; they end up taking the focus away from the main character, IMO. Likewise if we gave time for more characters in FiM, then we risk the show losing it's main focus.

Wouldn't it be better if we explored these unknown places with the characters we've followed for the last four seasons, so that we the audience can better relate to their reaction to the new place they're in, and learn about it with them?

 

...Nah! Who cares about proper storytelling? We just need shots of Derpy, Lyra and BonBon. You can always count on the fans to unquestioningly eat that shit up!

The problem is that it will take more than a 22-minute episode to develop these characters, to build their relations, to establish their histories, and to bring about a 'darker' setting.

 

It'll likely take more than one episode.

We're near the end of the series, so why should the focus briefly be put on characters that have nothing to do with the story? That sounds like it would be awfully contrived and pointless.

 

And like I said, how does taking place somewhere else make it darker? There's nothing keeping anything "dark" from happening to the main six in any location, Ponyville or otherwise.

The people who work on MLP have a good track record of ending their shows on a high note. With that in mind, I think it's a safe assumption that the movie in 2017 will be the big sendoff to the series. I hope.

I wouldn't want it. Main reason I watch the show is Rarity, and I'll be honest, the non-major characters don't really catch my interest, aside from Trixie. So I wouldn't really be into the idea.

Oh and for Ponyville. There have been episodes. See Crystal Empire and Canterlot Wedding for that or any episode where they leave Ponyville.

The Daring Do books they came out with recently were pretty awesome without featuring any of the Mane 6 or the CMC or Ponyville.

 

I think there is no reason such an episode could not work as long as they have an interesting enough story to tell. Most episodes of FiM are pretty self contained anyway, so it wouldn't be breaking up a major story arc or anything.

I think it'd be pretty interesting for sure. I mean it'd give some of the secondary characters a bit more to their personality and character traits, which would come in handy in future episodes.Though, at the same time, it'd feel odd not having any of the mane 6 in the episode at all. So far, any episode that's been partially focused on a secondary character, there's always at least 1 mane 6 in the episode. Magic Duel, Daring Don't and Boast Busters come to mind.

 

It'd be a refreshing thing to see, and could bring some ideas to the table for future episodes...and perhaps, add character depth to secondary characters, for the upcoming movie.

If it was well written (& they haven't "jumped the shark" yet)  why not?  Episode 100 is supposed to focus on background characters.

 

As to Derpy being featured.  Considering how much fuss got kicked up last time she spoke, IMO you'll see the devil open a ski resort in Hell before Derpy gets another speaking part.
