What are the worst things about school

Metallic Strings

Recommended Posts

For me, it was one huge thing, the people. I was an outcast in school, I barely had any friends until my final year there, and I just could not stand the majority of people there. Plus I have a bunch of social anxieties and that made it worse. There were other things I hated about school of course, but I could counter those by looking at things I enjoy in life. People, well, they can make school a living nightmare. Luckily it wasn't THAT bad, but it was never great either.

Well the school I went to, basically the amount of fights there and just some of the teachers. Plus the power system of years in school.

Well, I'm homeschooled (actually it's more of an online public school), but I really don't like the technology, I guess. There are sometimes glitches in the quizzes and the online class meetings don't always work. Plus, the site is down at least once a year.

And I don't like sitting at a computer all day. It's not good for my eyes. Isn't there anything better to do? Like this. Why can't I just sit on the forums with you guys all day... Wait.

The blocked websites: Why do we need to need websites blocked? To block people from looking at porn? Most people would not do that in a computer lab in front of people. And most of the websites you block can still be used for educational purposes.

Waking up so early in the morning: Why does school start so early? Why do I have to wake up this early? My brain can't even function fully at 7:30 in the morning. It's especially hell during Winter when you live far away from the school and you have to also walk out to the bus stop in the cold when the sun is not even up yet. Make school start at an actual decent time. In elementry school, it started between 8:30-9:00. You know, a decent time.

Homework: It really cuts into your forum surfing time. And some assignments feel unnecessary.

Students: There are the decent people. But then there are those people who are just jerks who want to make your school life miserable.

Stuff you learn: Most of it is useless. Let me tell you a typical math problem you'll need to know for a standardized test: "If Sally has 3 apples and gives John 2, what's the distance between the sun and Chicago, in millimeters? Oh, and solve for X.

I didn't much care for most of the other students in high school (especially at my first one), but worse than that were the administrators. I frequently went to the principal's office for disregarding rules that I thought were pointless and moronic.  Not to mention the spineless weasel had me arrested (long story, but it was nothing in any way, shape, or form violent or disruptive, and nothing to arrest someone over.)

I'm still in High School in my final semester. And the worst thing for me are the students there. They annoy me and I have a hard time concentrating. I get hard work but if the students weren't so annoying and unpleasant I could handle all my work just fine. I'm glad this is my last semester though.

The 'one size fits all' mentality that seems to be upheld- I know that it's difficult to give everyone what they want, but not everyone finds the same way the easiest one to follow. I remember getting fed up with how long my science lessons took to get anywhere, so I ended up just skipping ahead to the things I've yet to learn, and was pretty much put to a halt by my teacher who wanted me to go at the same pace as everyone else. :P

And... it lumps you in with all the other students, people who can be very different to yourself. I've always been very shy and generally didn't cause any trouble, so being in classes where almost everyone else was a jerk, and the teachers could give out class punishments or halt the lesson to shout at everyone there... it annoyed me so much. It made me cry because of how darn sensitive I was; I hate it when people raise their voice or when the class was in chaos and I didn't wish to be part of it. And I know I'm not alone, that other people have been affected a lot by this sorta thing- there was one case I've read about where a good kid was beating themselves up over a class punishment, because they thought they were to blame.

Maybe not everyone can stomach the soul-destroying aspects of school, and I sorta wished that could be respected a bit more...  -_-

1. Having to wake up at nearly six in the morning to go to school. I was in pain and I just couldn't stop thinking of doing something irrational, all because school has to start at seven in the morning. Why couldn't it start later at a reasonable time like nine or ten?

2. A tiny minority of students are nice, but the majority are unnecesarily rude and inconsiderate. It's even worse if you're shy or otherwise not looking for trouble. There's also people who hate anyone who is not their idea of perfection. It's people like that why I never tell anyone about watching MLP. I almost forgot to mention the lack of administration when you need it, and an excess when nothing is happening.

3. Every class I had each gave out homework that took all night. It's to the point that I never bothered doing homework.

Last semester of high school for me. It'd probably be some of the people. Like I've got a bunch of idiots in my small animal management class. Basically just stoners who don't give a flying feather about school. Also there's a theif in my culinary class, 2 phones have gone missing on our lab days. So my teacher is pissed off at us and banned us from having our phones out at any time.

During public schooling, it was more-or-less just the other kids, a decent amount of them were assholes in general who thought they were perfect in every way.

And with my current online schooling, my only complaint is that it's actually harder than public school, I like it better but it's just harder.

Some things I dislike(d) about school

- Bullies

- Nopony not even a teacher understood me and my Aspergers Syndrome. One exception was during high school when I was in a school made for kids like me.

- Waking up early

- Homework

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

Let me tell you a typical math problem you'll need to know for a standardized test: "If Sally has 3 apples and gives John 2, what's the distance between the sun and Chicago, in millimeters? Oh, and solve for X.

What?  Seriously?!  No no.  That's amazingly far from the truth.  Math, surprisingly enough, actually makes sense.  The reason a lot of people do badly in math is because they stare at new concepts telling themselves "This doesn't make sense" over and over instead of trying to make sense out of it.  If you want math to be easier on you, remember to tell yourself "This DOES make sense, I just have to find the sense in it."  Seriously, treat math as a puzzle game.  Learn the rules of the game and it'll be easier.  In fact, since math is all about finding patterns and logic, human brains, once they "get it" tend to want to do more math because your brain is designed to make you feel pleasure when you find patterns and follow logic.

Now that that's out of the way, what I hated about school is how they make you learn so many useless things.  Learning the elements of the periodic table?  Ha!  They actually give me a copy of the periodic table in college whenever I need it.  English as a second language? (English is not my first language)  They taught me the exact same things for years and I ended up learning more by watching TV.  Biology?  Yeah, that changes so much that I'm now learning that everything I learned in school about it was wrong.

And here's my favorite.  Math?  If you are not going to be a scientist, engineer, or computer programmer, you don't need to learn anything beyond pre-algebra or even just basic adding, subtracting, multiplying, and division. Seriously, they just want you to learn math just in case you choose a high-end math career later, but even then you didn't have to spend years in school learning it because if you need it, they'll just re-teach it to you in college.  Assuming you are not a high-end math student, they somehow still want you to math while studying.

My other problem with school is teachers that don't know how to teach.  I've had enough teachers who put stuffs on the wall, explain it, then go and do the opposite, get lost in their explanation, and then blame the students for not being smart enough.  I'd say the worse was my first gym teacher.  He refused to teach sports to a lot of students because they weren't good a it, but how were they supposed to be good at it if he refuses to teach?

For all of those still in school, hang in there.  Sure, it can be a pain, but later on, even if you don't need whatever they teach you, you do need your diploma and such to find a good career.  You'll be happy you got it over with later, especially if you get a good job.

If you can't tell by all this rant, I'm probably going to be a teacher.

Well, well, I can't really say I have that much trouble with school. I never saw much bullies, and, well, even if I saw some people being rejected during college, mostly because they acted badly during elementary school, they were not really bullied, and if they were not that taunty, I guess people wouldn't have hated them.

Some people did try to piss me off, of course, but I didn't really care.

The only thing that I hated there, is that the people were really uninteresting. No one really cared about school, and I needed to talk about stuff I didn't really care about, all day.

Now I've been in High school for more than 2 years, and it's much better ! Literally no one is bullied, the teachers are fine, and there are many people interesting here. Maybe I'm lucky.

I think the worst thing about school, right now must be.. Homeworks, because I often have to stay late to do them. But that's all, really.

I will say, I have an easier time in Algebra and even got an A on it last semester.

Geometry however, keep that away from me.

I hate the mindset that is created by the school administration. The goal of school seems to be more along the lines of following rules or listening to authority rather than ACTUALLY LEARNING. You'd think that an "education system" would be focused on educating students, but it doesn't seem that way.

Schools seem focused on completing assignments and tests, jumping through hoops and completing paperwork instead of finding the best ways to teach students. I'm sure that any student can think of a time where they had to complete a virtually worthless assignment, because "that's just what you have to do."

I hate the grading system. We are supposed to be at school to LEARN, why be expected to understand everything immediately and be punished for any mistakes? The grades themselves aren't even close to an accurate representation of how much a student has learned.

I hate tests. Well personally I am not troubled by tests (rather, I am much better at tests than completing homework), but tests seem absolutely terrible for everyone else. I have been blessed with a great memory so studying has never been much of a worry for me, but so many of my peers get stressed out over studying for tests, spending hours and hours to hopefully remember all the right things. Many people tend to perform more poorly under such conditions, so I see tests as inaccurate and wasteful of time and energy.

The way that schools try to teach students is normally pretty bad. If a student is struggling with a subject then it's usually because of the way that it's taught.

Math, surprisingly enough, actually makes sense.  The reason a lot of people do badly in math is because they stare at new concepts telling themselves "This doesn't make sense" over and over instead of trying to make sense out of it.

In my experience, people don't understand math as well because they are taught to "memorize" rather than "learn." After memorizing an equation, students would have trouble finding where and how to apply it. They complete certain problems over and over until they get used to how the equation is used in that certain type of problem, but never really learn how everything logically fits together and thus have a hard time dealing with any new applications.

Of all the highschool math classes, geometry is the one I have seen the most people struggle with. It is also the one that has the most need for application of learned concepts, instead of following the same type of question structure.

I hated getting homework, luckily, I barely, if at all, got any.

I hate the fact that the College Professors will speak so fast that you barely have any time to process and write down the information they are relaying to you.

I have Aspergers for Celestia's sake! That makes it even harder for me to get information quickly.

One thing I did like was Afterschool programs.

And some other things I hated were

The bathrooms

The schedule

The Tests. (Like really, I just passed a fucking HIGH SCHOOL REGENTS EXAM. Why the hell do I have to take a college entrance exam literally a year after the High School regents to prove that I can get into college?)

Personally, I hate the natural feel of the school and the people.

School just feels like.. a disaster waiting to happen to me. I have five classes a day this year, two of which are with random people not in previous classes. To the moment I walk into school til the moment I enter my house door I'm scared and nervous of the peoples and the events that either are or could happen around me. At lunch, before, after and between classes you're forced into the mix of every single student in the school. Weaving between and avoiding these judgemental, critical pricks who, if you even touch them in the slightest they'll give you the worst scowl or most menacing laughter, which sucks cause I'm clumsy
