We saw her use raritys gem spell so she can search for gems

Forgot about that, just found the clip where she uses it.

Hmph, there goes unicorns having a specialty down the drain. I guess some unicorns simply have a talent in certain forms of magic.

But I digress. Even if all magic is universal, my other point stands.

"Moving" a cutie mark is different from creating one.

I thought these episodes were great!

The bad out of the way first.

I have never been a big fan of the openings and endings of the seasons, I watch MLP for the slice of life.

On top of that, while the concept is interesting, I can't help but finding it all very cliche and predictable. I have seen this before.

It also leaves me worried what the rest of the season is going to be about.

It seems spreading friendship to Equestria.

Essentially this boils the moral down to; finding people who are unfriendly in some way somewhere, and fixing it.

I can't say it seems to promising, and going back to friendship friction between the mane 6 is kinda redundant as they are essentially the ambassadors of friendship.

The GOOD!

The animation and the facial expressions were all over the place these episodes, and I love it!

Fluttershy's cute and Pinkie Pie's skeptical faces made me laugh

The jokes were good, and how the mane 6 played off each other seemed better than ever. They actually felt like a group of friends.

It's one of the episodes that has made me laugh the most despite it's probably because of my hunger for ponies

Even though I wrote how I'm uncertain where the show will go from here in the BAD section, I am also interested in where they can take this. I am excited!  ^_^

Communism certainly wasn't something I expected to see in My Little Pony. Then again neither was slavery when I first saw the flashback of Sombra looking down on a chain-gang of crystal ponies. I thought Starlight Glimmer (is that her name?) was a good character foil to Twilight, and i also liked how some other ponies besides the Mane 6 saved the day. I would've liked to find out Starlight's motivation for wanting to equalize all of Equstria, like what drove her to want such a thing, but I can always hope it might be revealed in a future episode. It's very plausible for her to make a return in some way since she escaped.

Overall, i think we can expect to see some really great things from the new season .They'll be traveling to new places we've never seen, and instead of needing to learn the lessons over that they've already learned, the Mane 6 will be teaching them to others. There are a lot of creative ways they could go about doing it, and i can't wait to see what else is in store.

I just have to say- In my opinion, the episode is not about Communism. There are hints of certain communist, and socialist ideals, but Starlight Glimmer is more comparable to Hitler...in little instances anyway.

One of the ponies say: "We gave up everything to help you, because we thought you were our friend."

Which in my opinion is reminiscent of the opinion Germany would have had of Hitler at the turning point of the second world war:

"We elected you to lead us, because we thought you would save Germany."

While I acknowledge it is an odd outlook, I must say it seems more right to me than "Communism, obviously." Think about it a bit; the episode is definitely about several things -

1. Your talents are some of the things that make you special.

2. Coexistence is possible without destroying the things that make you special.

3. Starlight Glimmer is an ass.

4. And blind conformity is bad.

The Nazis had very opposing ideals in these instances.

1. Your background and the things that separate you from us make you inferior - (Jews, Russians, Gypsies, Gays, etc.)

2. Coexistence is only possible through the race of perfect, specific people.

3. (Not opposing) Hitler was definitely an ass.

4. Listen to your Fuhrer, he will take care of you.

Anyone else seeing the correlation here? I mean, it's obscure, but I'm convinced.

i see a correlation between the two. I've thought about it a little bit just because I've seen a picture somewhere of Starlight's head on Hitler's body, but seeing your argument I am starting to understand it.

Another point to add is that both of them were deceiving (being asses not withstanding). Starlight lied to the other ponies about giving up her cutie mark and hid behind a fake one. Hitler tried to commit genocide on Jewish people (which is a religion not a race so he was kind of an idiot), but he actually had a grandmother or someone in his family that was Jewish and I'm sure he lied about that fact.

Another thing when Twilight goes to just fucking shoot Starlight she makes the exact same pose as when she fired at Tirek.

(also, when her cutie Mark is being taken away, its the same exact noise as when Tirek is stealing her magic :P)img-3638425-1-ObGGvto.jpg

"But if I fire this blast it could destroy the whole planet!" "Well here it goes ka Mae ha Mae!!!!!" :P

Guess who crawled out of the woodwork.

Normally, i let most reviews slide off, by saying that they're just opinions. But there is actually one bit, where he's insulting people for liking this episode, by comparing them to the towns people and that's not okay.

It's also not a very good review for me, because most of his problems are so incredibly small, that he's making them bigger as they actually are.

Like i said before, Tommy Oliver is probably the kind of guy, who would probably make a 20 minute vid, where he explained why it dosen't make any sense, why brick walls are red.

So just for future reference, you being a Tommy Oliver fan is NOT something I should include in the Hypnosparkle fan club? :squee:

Part of me likes some of Tom's work, but things like he did here, putting himself up on a pedestal for being the good critic that doesn't overlook flaws, is kind of obnoxious. I can understand why Spike not going may be a problem for him, but I myself don't thinks it's actually contrived and also don't care anyway because I'd rather focus on the big themes. To be insulted like that kind of ticks me off and was completely unnecessary on his part.

Well, yeah, in concept, TO's review makes sense.

Everyone kind of DOES seem like zombays when it comes to the whole "starleght glimmr is comunist" thing.

But, to my knowledge, I'm the first one who noticed the implied torture, and I'm more leaning toward Nazi than communist, so, ?

Watched this three times now. Once at BABSCon during the premier, once on the flight home, and then last night with the kids. Some quick thoughts about why I thoroughly enjoyed the episode:

  • I loved the execution here
  • The dialog was clever and hilarious at times.
  • The pacing was tight
  • Fluttershy and Pinkie stole the show for me.
  • The more realistic and ambiguous villain is a welcome change of pace.
  • This isn't quite Communism, but I can see how people are interpreting it that way.
  • Raritears broke-a-my-heart.
  • No easy solution was presented at the end.
  • Recurring villain!
  • Fetch Quest foreshadowing done properly made be squee!
  • Twilight's wing ruffle.

All in all a brilliant start to the season. Great moral, diverse new characters, some evidence characters are growing/have grown, and a high stakes episode that works simultaneously as a simple or complex story depending on your preference all made this a phenomenal start to the new season.

Loved it!

I watched the review and I don't understand this point Tommy Oliver made at all. I mean, it is like saying that Star Wars is not well executed because it would have ended early with the Empire winning all if the Star Destroyer gunner just blew up the escape pod  with Threepio and Artoo in it.

He reviewed this too early.

That's a great point. But I don't understand how leaving Spike behind is "contrived", because it's something that has happened several times before (including in his favorite premiere The Return of Harmony).

Tommy says things I agree with in every review he does and then he says some things I really don't agree with right afterwords. I wouldn't even mind here, but like Hypno I got pissed that he implied that people are willfully overlooking these flaws and are worshipping everything DHX puts out. The word pretentious gets thrown around a lot, so I'll use "arrogant" to describe that instead :P

I see a lot of people saying "communism/nazi themed" but honestly, I saw more of a brony vs society thing myself. Also pinkies wall breaks are off the hook. "Is this an ending?"  and a few others, one about a tree castle reminded me of people mocking hasbro for making everything about the toys.

Oh, you mean like society shunning us, because we don't their norm? It's not really just bronies, but i like this anology.

It was okay. The only thing that really sold it for me was Starlight Glimmer, though.

She was amazing.

The amount of stuff put on this thread. I don't think anyone notices that there are some people who only watch the two-parters. We should go yell at those people next saturday.
