Such awesomeness. And he obviously knows what it means, he was just joking. This was not only his second shout out, but he made a neighing noise and mimicked riding a horse. I bet he watches the show.

According to a person who commented on the EQD posting who was in the audience, Stephen Colbert is in fact not a pony fan. I shall quote them:

 

I was in the audience tonight. Before the show there's a 10 minute Q&A with Stephen and I asked him if he was a brony. He said no, and then made me tell the entire audience what a brony is. He then asked what my parents thought and I said that my three y/o niece thought it was great! I asked him why he gave the shout out before and he said it was because someone else asked him if he was a brony. Most of the other Q&A was centered around his love of everything Tolkien. He recently flew to NZ to see the first 25 minutes of the movie.

 

The shout out was totally off the cuff and took me totally by surprise. The comment about the niece was directed to me. I could have died I was so happy. Unfortunately, I do not think he is really part of the herd. He doesn't have a favorite pony.

My guess is that Colbert is only passingly familiar with MLP due to its status within popular culture. I remember him quite vividly pantomiming riding a horse in the first shout out, so I'm a bit curious how he didn't know what a brony is yet knew enough to make the connection.

Wouldn't he like, get hundreds of emails from bronies explaining this craziness to him already from the first shout-out? I'm not surprised if he knows who we are, but neither will I be surprised if this is all about advertisement.

As cool as it is, I don't quite think he's actually a brony.

 

However it would be terribly amazing if they got him to do a cameo on an episode of MLP. I'd love to hear him do the voice of a pony that looks just like him, or Phil Sebben.

I don't actually care if he's a brony, seeing him shout out to bronies on his show already makes me happy.

Ah yes the great Colbert! While he does produce comedy gold and give us shoutouts, I don't think he's truly part of the herd.
