Thoughts on thrift stores?

I adore thrift stores. I saw someone say they can afford to buy clothes. That's not my reason. It's the thrill of the hunt! My mom and I got every week to several local thrift stores, including 2 Goodwill locations. You never know what you will find! I am trying to convince mom that this is our theme song!

I used to volunteer at one called Lifeline.

I enjoyed it, I did meet some very nice people during my time there.

I love thrift stores. I buy a large percentage of my wardrobe in these places, when I can find the good stuff. It's getting harder to find 1980s fashions, but that makes the thrill of the hunt all the better. And if I happen to stumble across some nice ponies, Barbie or vintage Star Wars toys, yeah, my day is complete.

I get pretty much all of my clothes from them. It's a lot cheaper that way.

I like thrift stores. I can't usually find stuff I like at conventional stores. But thrift stores aren't confined to only the newest and the latest so I like the greater variety they offer.

When I bought my house in 2016 I was glad I remembered the place! There's a thrift store a couple miles from my work. For the first couple of months I would stop in quickly after work about once a week until what I was looking for showed up. I got nice end tables for my family and living room and a nice glass coffee table for next to nothing. I've gotten a few other furniture things, some nick knacks, and electronics also. Some of the stuff was brand new and unopened also!

They're definitely worth checking out! You never know what you might find!

My opinion these days on thrift stores has changed since I can go when I want to instead of being dragged there when all I want to do is be at home or on a bad day when I have pretty bad dysphoria.

Anyways, I like going to the thrift store these days, it's where most(probably 95% of my wardrobe) of my clothes come from since brand new clothes in my size is hard to find and expensive.  I'm trying to be more considerate of things like fast fashion these days so I try buying most of what I need(besides underthings of course) from the thrift store.  Also, if it weren't for the thrift store, I wouldn't have much furniture at home either, finally got a good sofa from the thrift store(that was cleaned by some sort of in-store contraption).  It's also fun looking for halloween stuff at the thrift store, one of them around me gets a steady trickle of halloween stuff donated to them so they have a section for it, nice place to find home decor.

I like Thrift Stores in THEORY, but not always in practice.

Despite what a very popular song by Macklemore says, where I live, thrift stores are not always that exciting...
They don't have a ton of variety and awesome gems to be found. Rarely do they have something cool. Most of the time, thrift stores only have the junk that absolutely no one wants. If you are looking for clothes, there is a whole process to doing it right. If a piece of clothing looks visibly dirty, if it stinks, or if it triggers any red flags in any way; don't bother. If it seems clean enough, try it.

And that's just assuming the store itself is clean!
I've been to thrift stores where it smells rank the second you step in.
Not to mention, with a certain virus still running amok, thrift stores are probably not the best place to be right now. :please:

Where I live, I have often found that if you're trying to find something good, you get the best results when you're NOT trying to find something. When you come into the store with no expectations, when you're not trying to find anything specific, and you're just letting fate do whatever it wants. And that's hard for me, because often, I know what I want. Even if I have just a general idea of what I want and I'm trying to be easy-to-please, I won't find it. For example, let's say I want a purple shirt, ANY kind of purple shirt. If I go to a thrift store with that in mind, guess what? Not going to find a single purple shirt. At best, the only ones they will have are not in my size.

But outside of clothes, you never know what kind of rare gems you might find, and that can be fun too.  But I only go to thrift stores when I have time for it. I'm not going to stop at one thrift store and call it quits. If I'm in a thrift store mood, I'll go to a few of them in a row before I call it a day.

I think thrift stores are wonderful.  I mean... not all of them are pleasant.  Some are run-down.  But, y'know, the well-maintained ones are fine.  But y'know, as a concept in general, I think they're wonderful.  I love the idea of conserving and reusing.  It's so much friendlier for the environment to find a use for something that someone else didn't want rather than to just huck that thing in the garbage and make a new thing.  I will admit that I tend not to buy many secondhand clothes, though.  Accessories like belts, yeah, but not really clothes.  But I love thrift stores for non-clothing odds and ends.  For instance, some years ago I bought some bamboo stalks at the Asian store in the mall to put in my room as house plants.  It was just the bamboo, no planter.  Like, they just give it to you in a plastic bag with some water or whatever.  So I went to the Goodwill store and found a really cool, tall ceramic cup carved in the shape of a tiki head.  Sort of like a little Easter Island statue.  I filled it with pebbles and water and it made a perfect bamboo planter.  Thrift stores are wonderful for stuff like that.

I love thrift stores! :ticking: I mean, what's not to like? You get to make some great bargains as well as grant items a second chance. People throw perfectly good things away, luckily at least a fraction of them ends up in thrift stores and alike instead of junkyards.

I buy pretty much everything from the second hand stores.

I enjoy going through thrift stores just to look at all the neat old stuff you can usually find in them :eager: I also love going through antique stores too for the same reason :yay: One time at an antique store in Wisconsin I found a super cool souvenir coin from the 1933 Chicago World's Fair which I bought because I have a poster in my bedroom from that same fair, so it felt like it was sort of meant to be :squee:
