Facebook, and why you shouldn't link pictures from it.

A lot of us are on facebook, we use it to upload and share pictures. We have set them to private, so no-one can access them, right? Right? Well, think again.

This right here is a picture of a plant, a Wisteria to be exact. You can see it, which means you have access to it.

Now access it here: http://www.facebook....&type=3

And suddenly you can't anymore. ( Unless you are in my friends list. )

There is pretty much nothing Facebook can do about that, but they don't need to. It doesn't work in the reverse way. Would you be able to guess the numbers required there? You can't. They are probably randomly generated. And either way that is not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about how you can trace back a photo to it's owner. And it's really simple! Just some copy pasting indeed.

First, let's look at the file name:

37685_144542748892609_100000106553162_444212_7023633_n.jpg

Loads of numbers, there is no sense in it... but! What you probably don't know is that: the third number from the right is actually your profile id!

So we take that out which gives us:

100000106553162

Now what to do with that? Easy! You just paste it after this link:

www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=

so this gives us: www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000106553162

Oh noes! You have found me! ( I don't mind. )

And that is why you shouldn't link pictures from facebook, unless you don't care about your internet life seeping into your private life.

Edit:

Oh and please, don't turn this into a "This is why I don't use Facebook!!!1" thread. I didn't make it to complain, but to inform. So keep it that way, thank you.

Another reason why, internet filters! Block the entire website or certain pages!

That is why I don't use facebook period.

Interesting piece of information there, never knew such a thing. Makes me all the more glad that I took measures to deactivate my account, along with the pictures that were on it.

Hmm, well considering that i usually link other people's pictures, does this mean that I've shown the pony and other wacko internet worlds all of my friends personal lives?

I have 2 Facebooks, 1 for people i meet online, 2nd for people i know in real life, so if people get access to my online profile it really isnt that big of a deal

More reasons to try and persuade people to pass SOPA related bills... lol jk

Not sure how much it would reveal about some peoples profiles if they have their profile set to private, or "Only may only be seen by friends" and not "Viewable by friends of"

Facebook has been the source of so much strangeness for me. Just when I thought I had everything nice and hidden, the admin of one of the forums I frequent pulls a creeper on me and comments on my Facebook photo in PM - he looked it up via my (hidden) e-mail.

This is very interesting and good to know. I don't usually use Facebook to link pics, but now I know what the danger of it are.

(your profile pic is awesome btw.. sorry, had to say it! )

Interesting, next time my sister links me to something like this, I'm going to creep her out and find out where it came from >: D

Ah, I never link pictures from Facebook anyway because I'm always paranoid that people won't be able to see them due to weirdo privacy settings. So I just use Photobucket instead.

But good information! I guess it justifies my struggle... and gives me more ways to stalk people. :P
