Scootaloo's Wings

I have noticed something about Scootaloo's wings and want to know if anyone else agrees with my theory.

So in season 5 episode 13, Do Princesses Dream of Magical Sheep?, during the dream sequence Scootaloo's wings grew enormously large and she was able to fly.

OK now fast forward to episode 17, Brotherhooves Social. I first noticed that Scootaloo kept her wings folded at her side like most adult pegasi generally do. Thinking back, I can not remember ever seeing her do that before. She did it again in episode 18 as well, the episode were she got her cutie mark with a wing on it.

Were I'm going with this is, are these clues that her wings are actually beginning to grow and she will learn to fly in the near future? Or am I simply reading too much into it?

Did she have her wings folded before in a scene that I can't remember? What do you think on this?

She will learn to fly. It's almost the opposite of fluttershy. She never wanted to fly, at least not like other Pegasus. She wanted to be close to the ground. Scootaloo wants nothing more than to get off the ground. I think her determination will get her there. I also think that her cutie mark will come into question just as the others will question theirs. She will want to know why her special talent involves a lightning bolt and wing, and during that episode she will learn.

What's the point of Applejacks name? Would be better if it were Applebuck since it that is what she does. Or Apple Bloom? Other than the fact she is an apple family member what does her cutie mark have to do with it? Just because she she might learn how to fly doesn't mean anything about her name.

Look at Pinkie Pie, Pinkie isn't even her real name...

The Apples have apple related names because they work in an apple farm.

It's better that Scootaloo doesn't fly as a pegasus that can still live a normal life as one that can't. Makes her relatable for people with disabilities.

Isn't that the same argument people used when Muffins was being censored?

I can see what your saying, I still do hope she flies eventually though but good point,

having Scootaloo not fly is not going to be related to those who have disabilities.

Why not take away Sweetie Belle's magic? That would make sense too, would it not?

People are going to debate this to death until we are given an answer.

But trying to turn it into an argument over being relatable for people with disabilities is not an argument that will go anywhere good.

Her wings work, she lives in Ponyville for a reason, and she has probably never had a use for them until she figured out what they were for. Thus wanting Rainbow to take her under her wing and teach her.

There are unicorns that are bad at magic like Trixie.

I'd prefer Scootaloo not being a carbon copy of Rainbow Dash. Thinking she should use her wings to make her move faster on her scooter like ostriches and dinosaurs did.

I have a feeling that eventually she will fly, at first I was thinking that she did not have much use for her wings before since she lives in Ponyville but then I remembered that she uses them when riding her Scooter. However, if they can actually give her tons of momentum on her scooter, I don't see why they would not be strong enough to make her fly eventually.

My preference though...I feel like her not being able to fly fits more to her character, it is weird but her being the Pegasus that uses a super fast scooter seems so much more fitting. I am not against her flying, I just imagine her not being able to fly more than that.

Fanfic consensus seems to be Pegasi are too big to fly without a magical boost.  Some ponies get it earlier than others.  Pound Cake was flying when only about a month old (Baby Cakes) others get theirs later. (Off topic, but Pegasi cribs & playpens probably have lids)  Fluttershy was not really able to fly in Jr Flight Camp (Cutie Mark Chronicles).

Scootaloo is pretty late learning to fly, but Sweetie is just learning to use her magic so it is possible S will learn 1 day. Frankly, I thought it plausible that the reason she hadn't gotten her Cutie Mark yet was because it would be flight related.  I've heard Lauren Faust wanted Scootaloo to be crippled & Hasbro forbade it.

It's not confirmed, and like "Sleepless in Ponyville" made Rainbow Dash her sister without referencing Scootaloo's family situation, which continues to go unmentioned, future episodes can reference Scootaloo's character development, specifically working around her inability to fly, without definitively going one way or the other. It's one case in which you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, because obviously the fandom's split over whether it should happen or not.

The wing and the lightning bolt can be less interpreted as literal symbols of flight and weather than as more indirect symbols of speed as we commonly interpret them in real life. The use of them on her cutie mark doesn't prove anything regarding her ability or inability to fly except that she's fast and athletic. That can be used in a hypothetical episode, in which Scootaloo would probably mention a desire to take after Rainbow Dash's flying, but apply her natural athletic skills elsewhere. No implication of whether or not she would ever fly is necessary, the fact is she can't do it now. So you still have quite a bit of mileage you can get out of this character and have it make sense, too.

  • 1 year later...

Hello. I have noticed that some people think that Scootaloo not being able to fly would be to do with disabilities, except what would be "wrong" with her wings? We see that they are strong enough to push her scooter and we know that Bulk Biceps can fly.

As for the disabilities thing, why not introduce a unicorn who can't control their magic or a blind or deaf or whatever pony? (Maybe I'm just thinking because blindness and deafness are common disabilities and a unicorn who can't control their magic sounds cool, I dunno  :derp: ) But anyway, back on topic. Some people have said that they don't want Scootaloo to fly because they don't want her to be like Rainbow Dash, but flying does not equal like Rainbow Dash. After all, Twilight learned to fly and she's not like Rainbow Dash. Some people also say that they don't want Scootaloo to fly because they want her to be good on land, but why not both? After all, Fluttershy and the Alicorns are good on the ground and with flying.

So that's why I still want Scootaloo to fly.

P.S. I noticed that people with disabilities which mean they can't walk have gizmos that mean they can get around. Do pegasi with non-flying disabilities have flying machines?

To be perfectly honest, I don't want to see Scootaloo be able to fly.

I feel like it would be a cop out for the writers to not want to have to address one of their main characters possibly having some kind of disability.

While they could implement a character specifically meant for that task in one episode, it wouldn't leave that strong of an impact.

Having some random pony that we never heard about before hand being introduced into an episode with the sole purpose of teaching a moral about disabilities, wouldn't nearly be as strong as if it was Scootaloo who's inability to fly would be her handicap.

It would allow for more storytelling possibilities such as being able to overcome adversity in order to accomplish the things you love to do.

It also would allow for Scootaloo to get her own story arc, and would make for interesting character moments between her and Rainbow Dash, as Scootaloo looks up to and wants to be like her, but with her inability to fly, Scootaloo wouldn't be fully able to emulate her idol.

This could allow her to learn to be herself and stuff like that.
