What size do you imagine the characters?

Good rideable size. Bonnie Zacherle designed MLP so that kids who wanted their own horses, like she did, could get a slice of that experience. Being able to ride them is probably a big part of why the target audience wants horses. We can probably pin the size down better if we compare to other animals in the setting - Or, for example, from Troubleshoes Clyde, who looks to be a Clydesdale horse. Going by the size of a Clydesdale, how big are the ponies next to him?

I go by the dimension called the "length" or "height"; the bounding box of a pony is roughly square, so 1 length = 1 height.

 

1 length of a pony is roughly half a meter, or 18 inches.

Celestia would be taller than a average full grown male

Cadence/Luna would be the height of the average female

Twilight is just a tiny bit shorter than a average female

The mane five would be just a little bit shorter than Twilight

Spike would be the height of a Cocker Spaniel

The CMC or any other filly/colt would be just a tiny bit taller than Spike

Chrysalis would be taller than Celestia

Sombra would be in the middle of the average male and female

Changelings would be shorter than the mane five

Breezies would be the height and length of a butterfly

Manticores would be the height of Celestia or just a bit shorter

Discord would be at least 13ft tall

They would go up to around the knees of your average fully grown human, I would say somewhere between a mid sized and large dog to put things in perspective.

About 3.5-4 feet tall. If you google it there's images of people using the eight foot candy-cane from Hearthwarming Eve as a measuring stick. Fillies are 2-3 feet tall, I think.
