spoiler The season finale is impossible

In It's About Time, they went on record to say that time travel is nearly impossible and even if accomplished, only lasts for less than a few seconds. So, yeah, the season finale is impossible.

I think it will have something to do with the Cutie Map's magic which must be powerful to be connected to the tree of harmony and maybe we will see the enchanted items that were mentioned in the season premiere.

Future Twilight only mentions the "few seconds" thing after she's been talking with herself for almost a minute. I think Starlight could pick a critical point in history and use that minute to do some serious damage to the time stream.

In "Slice of Life" Dr. Hooves states that time travel is no big deal - there's a spell for it. Presumably any well-studied unicorn can cast it since "It's About Time" didn't really state what level of spell it was and Starlight seems pretty capable of casting it.

Warning, speculative spoilers follow.,...

Originally I agreed that the most obvious place to change history was Rainbow's Sonic Rainboom, but there have been no scenes of Starlight spying on Twilight with mention to that event, so it's unlikely she is aware of it.

Now that we've had a second sighting, it seems this is where she gets the idea to use time travel. So her appearance in "Amending Fences" probably means she's planning to change something in S1E1 to make Twilight never form the Mane 6. What that change is that could take only a minute I'm still pondering on...

Maybe she crashes Pinkie's party for then-newcomer Twilight and spikes (ha!) the punch so everypony there sleeps through the day, and Celestia is forced to use the elements herself to stop Nightmare Moon, thus causing her to go all power-hungry?

Of course, "It's About Time" isn't clear on whether anything you bring back with you in time can stay around longer than that one minute. That is, if she makes a sleeping potion to put in the punch, would its molecules snap back to present day even if it was already mixed in after the minute had passed?

The Map makes it possible ;)

Perhaps they find a way or something. In today's episode, they referenced time travel, which could be subtle foreshadowing to the finale.

I think that was just a gag no foreshadowing involved

Let's make the Tardis cannon!

My guess would be she convinces Twilight to go to Moondancer's party, preventing Twilight from ever meeting up with the Mane 6 in the first place.

Kinda reminds me of the episode in the 4th series of doctor who, where donna got stuck in an alternative timeline where she never met the doctor and the whole world and universe fell into chaos.

Yeah pretty much that. I'm just guessing that there will be multiple versions of this playing out (ie, first Starlight goes to event X, Twilight fixes it but with potential consequences, so Starlight goes even further back, and you repeat until you go back to the Sonic Rainboom, or you play it the other way, Sonic Rainboom first)

Course that won't explain the massive Changeling invasion happening right under everyone's noses ;)

Yeah, I like your suggestion better, it's a lot more straightforward than trying to smuggle an item back through time!  :squee:

Remember how the Portal in the Equestria girls universe could only be opened once in a very, very long time? Remember how they fixed that problem in five seconds when the plot required it?

Basically, that spell from its about time only allowed that much time, but if the writers want to BS and create ANOTHER way to time travel, they can. After all, Star swirl the bearded did a lot of experimenting with time travel and journeyed through time more than once based on the journal of the two sisters. So its quite possible that there are multiple spells for it.

Time Travel WITH THAT SPELL can only be done once and lasts for a few seconds.  This does not preclude other spells without those restrictions which would likely be harder to cast.
