Does the show push the rating to you?

Hey there :)

As this topic relates more to the show than with general fandom related material, I have moved it over to the more appropriate section :)

I don't know much about ratings, to be honest. >.>'

The U.S.'s TV ratings range from very strict to very lenient. TV-Y is by far the strictest; everything written must be appropriate for all-ages and cannot contain content like strong fantasy violence, blood, and swearing. If it crosses the line, then parents can file a complaint.

And at least four episodes push the envelope to the point where they can be TV-Y7:

  1. A Canterlot Wedding, Part 2: The brawl between the Changelings and Mane Six borders it due to the violence (from punching a Changeling in the mouth to shooting a cannon at them).
  2. Daring Don't: Fantasy violence.
  3. Power Ponies: Fantasy violence, and some of it got very violent.
  4. Twilight's Kingdom: Extreme Dragonball-esque fantasy violence. Had to be toned down during the draft stage because actual punches crossed the boundaries.

Oh. Thanks for the quick explanation. I know more things now! :)

Well, maybe things get a bit violent at times... but it's usually pretty chill. If they don't get their violence from Mlp though, they're almost guaranteed to get it from somewhere else. ^_^'

In some aspects, I feel that the show does push the rating a bit. I chalk that up to the fact that the writing and storytelling is top notch. The reason why MLP is so popular amongst us is because they can tell compelling stories within the TV-Y restraint. I applaud the show staff for being able to work around the strict rating so effortlessly

Not particularly, although I can see it happening in Season 6 though, they almost started pushing the boundaries a bit in Season 5.

Wait, that was the toned down version? Edited by NeonCobalt

Yes. In the original draft, Twilight was supposed to knee and punch Tirek in the face.

I don't really know what changes a rating from TV-Y to TV-Y7, but I have never seen anything even slightly objectionable in this show. Like there was that one 'adult' joke about "spiking the punch" but that was it. Adult humor is extremely rare in this show.

For comparison, every Nick cartoon has a TV-Y7 rating even with childish humor and zero contact.

It's things like this that make me glad I'm old enough to drink, vote, drive, consent, get married, and run for president. Kids today are too soft and sheltered; yeah, the show pushes y's limits a bit, but that's a good thing. Withholding knowledge of something from somebody doesn't change the fact that something is still there or still happening. Rather, kids need to be educated about real-world violence and fantasy violence so they can differentiate and know what to do when confronted with real-world violence. Better an educated survivalist than a sitting duck, I always say. :nom:

I think I'd agree with most of these. My hunch is that they got away with it because the characters didn't seem to get injured or battered beyond a few bruises and messed-up manes, although property was destroyed and the characters were physically worn down by it.

I don't know if other episodes with dark/intense imagery would qualify as well, but I'd list episodes like "Bloom and Gloom", "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?", "Sleepless in Ponyville", "The Return of Harmony", and "Somepony to Watch Over Me" in addition.

In all truth, however, I think content ratings on a cable show like MLP might be voluntary, because it mostly falls outside of FCC jurisdiction (over-the-air TV).

In the newer seasons, the show does seem to have become a bit more mature than it started out as.

For example, in the season 5 finale, we pretty much saw a war going on. That definitely pushed the TV-Y rating quite a bit.

So the rating definitely gets pushed a bit, but it manages to stay appropriate for children.

Early on, the show was definitely far more tame than it is now and to me that shows that the writers now have more confidence in potentially pushing some boundaries and the rating along with it. The season 5 finale showed many grim concepts, like the other mane 5 living in hiding and most likely being captured or the war with Sombra, and not to mention Tirek absolutely obliterating everything, this show has pushed its rating a few times at least, mostly in season 4 and 5, going with my original statement.

Wow. I think that the way it was worked better though, it was more a battle of magical ability then physical strength. Granted, Twilight was beefed up the the other three princesses, but I still thought it was both interesting and a lot of fun to watch.

Most of the times, not really.  Yeah there are the occupational action scenes but Celestia know's what reason violence is usually ranked below language and sex so you could have a massive ton of violence but so long as you don't swear or talk about natural body functions your rating won't nearly be as high.  Take DBZ Kai for instance, on Toonami it's TV-14 and it's unedited, but on Nick it's TV-Y7 and all they really did was remove the blood and take out the swears. MLP for the most part doesn't need to swear or show gratuitous violence so it fits it rating, for the most part. Then again I think strict adhesion to a rating ultimately can undercut a story and rating should be used as a guideline and not as a hard rule for what is and is not age appropriate.

Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.
