Do You Want MLP to Address More Serious Issues? Which? How?

Cmon its a children show. I mean it was meant for children in the begining. Only way that this could be happen is if somepony of the main 6 smokes/drinks and gets addicted to it and later learns if is wrong ,but i wouldnt want it. It would be even worse problems than with derpy.

It is never going to happen in a bazillion years as there would be a lot of very angry and possibly sue happy parents.  It is just one of the many subjects that is best left to the fanfic writers, seriously there are alot of fanfics that deal with these topics and some of them are quite good.

I don't think that anypony would want to do that, even if they would have a possibility. Especially not any of the mane 6, maybe some background or newly introduced pony.

Secondly, I don't think that mild references are bad they give something for us bronies to enjoy on another level.

Thirdly, I think that one episode dedicated to that topic, when they learn about it would be pretty much ok, if well handled. It couldn't be about addiction or landing in gutter... I don't know exactly how it should be showed, but I believe there's a good way to approach the topic.

I would hate myself to see Mane 6 doing that kind of stuff, as I have complete trust in them :)

Given how my previous post have been. Such as the one as " is death implied in the show." What if the show went darker with the content. Like having characters die. Say Celestia is killed by Chrysalis or something like that. Obviously doesn't have to be gory. But say if a pony in the show dies they turn gray and are lifeless. I mean does it really matter. We already have alcohol references. We have seen a funeral. Little girls aren't meant to be talked down to. Have some characters die. As much as I love Celestia, turn her into Optimus Prime. Have her die and pass down her leadership to Cadence or Twilight. If Celestia is truly immortal she could pass down her immortality to one of them and that new pony would control the sun. I sound ridiculous. But if the show went darker I think it would be good. Builds character for younger kids. MLP is already a great show. But when I was a kid I wasn't talked down to

I wouldn't mind it becoming darker, but not in the way you describe. I despise darkness for the sake of darkness, and having Celestia die just sounds... unnecessary. And you know how darkness is used best in my opinion? When it makes the light at the end of the tunnel even brighter. An episode concerning Applejack's parental grief and healing past pains, for example. But that would probably be seriously pushing their limits, as awesome as it would be.

I...would be fascinated and love to see the show take a slight dark turn. Your ideas sound rather interesting, having Celestia pass her leadership down to another alicorn being my favorite. We DO still have to factor in the younger kids that watch the show, and of course their very...touchy parents. Same deal with The Last Roundup and Derpy. Parents get worked up over the silliest things, I swear. ._.

Stella, how you've described darkness in the show is just absolutely wonderful.  I agree with you on all points, but I've got a little bit more to add on.

I'd like to keep the morbid themes to fanfiction.  But the more thought-provoking darkness, such as that of death, would be a wondrous addition to the show.  It wouldn't fly, but if at all possible, I'd love to see the show take a turn down that path.

But, the show itself should remain, in my opinion, a show full of life's joys first and foremost.

As long as the show retains the innocent side that is a large part of why it is so wonderful, then darker episodes here or there aren't a bad thing.  There used to be serious kids shows all the time.  I like the idea of Twilight taking over for Celestia btw.

Well, not this show.

But eventually...eventually friendship is magic will end.

And then.  Generation Five will begin sooner or later.

Generation Five.  I want it to be a bit darker, aimed towards teenagers instead of kids.  I want it to be even better then Generation Four.

I don't want to see a gen 5 for a long time. Gne 4 is the most popular generation it is allowed to overstay it's welcome. Also they killed people in transformers. So why not MLP

No, I like My Little Pony because it's not dark.

My Little Pony is a colorful, happy, cute, and innocent show about friendship. That's why I watch it.

If I wanted to see a dark show, then I wouldn't be watching a show like My Little Pony, now would I?

Because Transformes is a franchise about big robots with big guns that engage in epic battles and make lots of things explode, so it makes sense that some people have to die there.

But no, I would not want that kind of dark stuff in this show, that's fanfiction territory. However I wouldn't mind if the show got a little more serious every now and then, dealing with more complex, less black and white, issues.

I'd like it if the increased the amount of drama and suspense in the average episode rather than make it darker. One of my favourite episodes is MMMmystery on the friendship express which I think managed to increase the suspense and drama of the show without taking away the innocence and humour we've all grown to know and love.

I know the episode was basically MLP ripping on Poirot and Sherlock Holmes but they I'd t so well that all through the episode I was trying to work out who it was. It kept me really engaged in the show and sent my mind reeling with possibilities that could have happened only to be shown how wrong I was.

I think that there is a place for dark things, but I am not sure if it is necessarily with MLP. One would have to keep in mind the original audience and make sure that if it is dark, then it must "fit" and not go beyond the show's scope. I also agree with Stellafera in that (at least in the case of MLP) darkness for sake of darkness is something I would rather see avoided.

Though to be honest, I am not sure if I really want to see it go that dark, most of us who love the show for what it is now, which is rather optimistic. Compare that to things people in my age group (I am 19) are into, and you will find that they are very dark more often then not. The thing about MLP is that it is the only light hearted show that I love it for what it is without any sort of irony, despite it not really being that dark (sure it has it's moments, but it always hits the right amount to keep you engaged without destroying the shows "alignment" if you catch my drift).

It depends on how well-executed the darkness is.

I mean, just blood, gore and plain darkness isn't going to cut it. You have to make it so that it will be sad, but not so much that it ruins the theme of the show. MLP is supposed to be upbeat, light-hearted and death would be seriously pushing the limits of the show, but an implied death wouldn't. And it doesn't necessarily have to involve dying, you could ruin a career or show a very sad story, or something like that.

If it's done well, yes. Otherwise, no, keep MLP the same D:

Well, Yes and No,

Yes - For all the teens and pulling them into the show and going ' Oh! Dis stuff be good! ' and stuff.

No - For all the younger people watching the show, just imagine if a 3 year old was watching MLP and saw an episode where someone dies or something?

You know what happened the last time a light-hearted series I liked tried to become darker and take itself more seriously?

250px-Shadow_the_Hedgehog_Coverart.png256px-Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Next-Gen_Box_Ar

Now im not saying Twilight would start using minor curse words and start carrying around guns everywhere or that Rainbow Dash would have a romantic relationship with a human while a psychic pony from the future tries to kill her but my point still stands. The series has been farily cartoony and light hearted up to this point. I wouldn't mind darker themes, but come on it's a show about six candy colored ponies that go on magical adventures. There are never any real threats unless it's a season premiere or season finale. If Hasbro decides to put effort into G5 so they can keep the bony fanbase then maybe we could try something there. Kinda like how Legend of Korra is a little more dark and mature when compared to Last Airbender.

Didn't they kind of kill Tirek in the original MLP series? If we're talking about that kind of dark than sure, why not. It's just that you can't overdo that kind of stuff on TV anymore, too many soccer moms out there y'know. Maybe just some dark undertones would work fine with the show

That depends on what you mean by "dark", if you mean grimdak, then no. If you mean something like Disney dark, or Don Bluth dark, like All Dogs go the Heaven, that might be a interesting thing for the writers to experiment with.

I would like to see a little more "Earn Your Happy Ending" now and again.

I think that it's beyond the scope of the show, but if we are talking about teaching a lesson or something... I think it can be done for an excellent effect, but very carefully.

Ever read Fallout: Equestria? The drama is fantastic in the beginning. It hurts to see the ponies like that, but after a time, it's so overdone within the fic itself that it becomes boring.

Oh... Littlepip is dying again... Uh-hu... Oh... of course... Healing potion... Shot again... <sigh>..

I'm not sure I like the idea of the show becoming darker, personally. There's a lot of dark stuff in life, and the show can be a refuge, a place where you can just laugh at Pinkie doing something. Maybe even dream of this place so beautiful, so full of life.

Did that sound weird?

I think I'd not stop watching the show now, because I'm hooked. But if it had started like this, I don't think I'd be here.

I understand what people are saying that this show is a refuge for safeness. I know life sucks. But I would only want the show to cover death once and that would be about it. I think if Celestia died it would make her and Twilight's relationship go full circle. It would also shape twilight and make her a mature adult

I kinda wouldn't mind mlp making a few "darker" episodes.. but not death. Mlp is not a show for death. I think only an episode with a more dramatic plot would happen. I guess this goes along with everything everyone else is saying...
But anyways, if you want mlp to be dark, there's always fanfiction. Go find the mlp you want, someone else has probably written it. But in the show, I want it to stay happy and joyful and stuff.

Depends on how people define dark. I don't want it to be "dark", but someone said earlier I think it could work experimenting with something like "Disney Dark" themes ala Hunchback and such

You mean "dark" as in "bad thing happen for a good dramatic reason" and not "I wanna see some ponies squirm" kind of dark, right?

In this case, I think it would be ok.
