Rarity did not manipulate or trick Spike into giving her the heart ruby. She was merely showing admiration for that which is beautiful. Spike saw how much Rarity liked the ruby and gave it to her since he wanted her happiness.

 

That and Spike did get something far better then the gem. A kiss from the mare he loved. He was happy and she was happy. Often giving and generosity is simply bringing happiness for others.

I have seen in YouTube comments, RD Network threads and other places that people think that Rarity is not often portrayed as very generous, even though generosity is her element. There are many examples that show how wrong this is, such as how she made dresses for her friends to go to The Gala, but I just want to here you guys' opinion on this.

I think Pinkie. Except for Party Of One, she is always cheery. Sure, all the mane 6 have failed to live up to their elements, but I don't except them to be perfect. But considering that Pinkie is supper happy, I'd say her.

Ok, I have come to a decision on something. Rarity is easily the hardest to make a decision on and here is why. She has the most moments of losing her element, & being anything but generous. HOWEVER, she also has the biggest moments of showing off her generosity. The dresses, the tail being given as a moustache to the giant sea serpent, forgiving spike after he destroyed ponyville... While her bad moments outnumber her good ones, the individual good moments outshine the individual bad moments. So while I do think Rarity doesn't live up to her element as much as others, I think her's is the most balanced, if only because the quality of the good weighs about right with the number of bad moments. I think the rest are almost always in their good moments, with fewer bad to use against them. For example, Fluttershy, my personal favorite, has had plenty of bad moments. But the majority of the time we see her she is fawning over an animal, & her biggest moments are her being kind (minus a certain Iron Will incident...). Feel free to argue this but I just think it feels the most... Fair towards her.

Personally, I think this is just a huge assumption about her character - fashion divas like her usually are selfish and greedy; the opposite of generosity, but that's also the opposite of Rarity too. In a show famed for breaking the mold of what a cartoon is supposed to be, Rarity is no exception of going against the stereotype her character arc bears by enjoying fashion and the high life while maintaining a kind and giving heart and being very generous to all

 

So, yeahh She's a character many people seem to underestimate due to a bad first impression or something, which is just silly. We should give second chances and be forgiving, not just to assume the worst in things because the others are ones that are rotten. She's a heart of gold in a business filled with hearts of ice, and that's one of the many things that's so great about her

The entire episode she just keeps going "Oh I'll do it later, I just promised one of my closest friends an incredibly valuable dress that I said I was going to put all my effort into making but OH HECK YEAH WAY TO MAKE MYSELF MORE POPULAR! GIMME!!!!!" I smaller example would be making Fluttershy feel guilty about being a fashion model, knowing Fluttershy would feel guilty about it, & doesn't notice once how painfully obvious Fluttershy is not enjoying the limelight. I don't remember if that was before or after the group found out that she has really bad stage fright, but if it was after then that makes it even worse.

But generosity is about more than cash and stuff. When you're forgiving and gentle to people, you show generosity of spirit. If you give others help or credit, that shows generosity. I showed you a list of everything generous she's done - not every single pony lives up to their element all of the time. That's an unrealistic expectation.

For the first part, I completely agree. I even pointed out a point where my favorite character was the complete opposite of her element. It is just that overall I think Rarity has more moments of bad than good. More so than pretty much any of the other mane 6. I have nothing against Rarity the character, by the way. I like her more than most. I just don't think she lives up to her element as strong as someone, say, Pinkie does (I am using Pinkie because she is about as neutral as I could think of). Without conflict, the characters would be boring & therefore the show boring. Rarity just has a lot of conflict.

 

For the second part, I agree that, at first, it could be confusing. However, after awhile, it should have become apparent. I mean, that episode hyped their friendship up like mad! They had (I think a) weekly spa treatment together. You mean to tell me that after who knows how many of those Rarity couldn't notice that Fluttershy wasn't enjoying herself? I mean there is being confused & then there is turning a blind eye...

You can't accuse her of turning a blind eye without any proof of such deeds, first and foremost - she said she didn't realize that Fluttershy didn't like, and given the fact she was experiencing problems of her own throughout the episode as well, I think that's understandable. Like in court, you need to presume innocence until proven guilty - if we just think everyone/pony is guilty of a crime we thought they committed, then the world would be a terrible place.

Nothing against you, but I am debating about continuing this, at least for now. It is late, I got school in the morning, and I don't have time to find the evidence to back up my own statements. The above section I quoted was just so you would see this, in fact. I really do want to continue this, I am just worried about not being able to debate with a clear, non-sleep addled head. So, could we possibly finish this tomorrow over PM? I just want to make sure I don't say/do something I will regret (there are 2 times it is bad to mess with me; When I am hungry, or when I am tired. Mess with me at both, something is going to get hurt. While you aren't messing with me, the fact remains that I have a bad habit of being snippy when I am either tired or hungry & I do not wish to cause a ruckus). Does that sound ok too you?

I don't remember if that was before or after the group found out that she has really bad stage fright, but if it was after then that makes it even worse.

The episode where Fluttershy 'crippling stage fright' first appeared is in Filli Vanilli, which took place long after Green Isn't Your Color. It actually goes counter to what has previously been shown.

 

Time as a model: hated all the attention, but did no show any stage fright. There is also the time when she acted in the Hearthwarming Eve Pageant she showed nervousness about so many ponies watching her... but was perfectly fine while playing her part, no stage fright. Also sang in front of the same audience after the play without ant problems. Moreover Fluttershy has sang multiple times around others without issue.

 

It was the main problem I had with that episode and relates to why I dislike Lesson Zero.

Ghostie we've seen the list, at least I have. And before I've shown you my list to counter it, things didn't really turn out well. I don't remember you liking the conversation all that much. But I know afterwards we patched things up, especially after "Rarity Takes Manehattan" (which in my opinion is the best portrayal of Rarity)

 

My opinions of Rarity have changed a lot, but I do think that her personality most often conflicts with her Element. I'd rather not fault her, as I know you might take it the wrong way; but look at the element she has to deal with and the position she is in versus the other mane 6. She's a business owner, she can't constantly be giving and too kind; she's a diva, she has to obsesses over herself and her appearance. This can lead her to looking greedy/cheap and selfish, I'm not saying she is because her acts of generosity outweigh the smaller acts of self centered behavior.

 

In my opinion her acts of generosity shine all the brighter do to the fact that it is so contrary to her skin deep vanity and shows what type of person she really is. Thing is when she is being self absorbed she tends to put on a show of it while when she is generous she always remains humble. So in the everyday eye of everypony and for living up to her element she is the least in my opinion.

 

Though I'd say she does still represent her element better than rainbow dash. It's just easier to live up to being loyal everyday than to be generous everyday. It's easy to be more kind, to laugh, to tell the truth, to even preform magic. But to be more generous and live up to that concept everyday would leave a pony very poor and unfabulous. So I blame her element, not Rarity, cause it's the hardest element to bare and she does it fabulously.

Because this thread isn't about representing her element it's about living up to it. Rainbow Dash lives up to her element everyday in simple ways and actions because loyalty can be easy. You know, I don't know what sort of pleasure can be derived through degrading discussion like this - it's why I'm so damned adamant about defending her. People just look to criticize her for some reason, and I'm just tired of it...

 

...you know, some one really should go through and make a list of all the things Rainbow Dash has done that have been loyal throughout the series, or all of the kind things Fluttershy has done throughout the series. And I mean a list - not just naming a couple of things they've done, but an actual damned list like my Rarity one. We could compare and contrast then, but I need factual information instead of just speculation.

 

I've been given 2 or 3 things to discredit all of the generous things she's done throughout the series, and no one else even motherbuckin' bothers to try and list off some of the other things the others have done, it's all about Rarity here.

That's why I don't bother to bring out a list, you get too stuck up on trying to make Rarity perfect best pony that last time I brought out a list on you, you made it sound like I give you a panic attack and near heart attack. You got to calm down man, everypony has strengths and weaknesses. I could go through and build lists for every character but I'd be afraid you'd die half way through the comparisons. They've all had their moments when they seem to be contradicting the element the represent. But they have also lived up to their elements a lot more frequently than they've contradicted them.

And why is everyone so quick to gang up on Rarity? She was obviously very appreciative that Spike gave her his fire ruby. It's not like she just took it and that was that. She made a point to compliment him on HIS generosity, and was even inspired to make capes for the rest of the mane six as gifts.
