Hybrid pig humans. Disturbing?

ManaMinori

Recommended Posts

So apparently, the world's first chimera has been created, with scientists finding they can grow human parts inside of a pig, for those in need of organ transplants. Does ths deeply disturb anyone else, for now and in the future? Hybrid species, I think, shouldn't even exist outside of mythos.

hm..well knowing human's and pig's organs are technically the same with some minor differences. So i don't really see this as a pig problem.  If this actually succeed where pig can still function with a human's organs then maybe vice versa. Human organs donors can be hard to come around.

Overall, as long it not expressed inhumanly toward both the animal and human.

but I wouldn't go extreme calling this a chimera.

Anything with more that 1 set of DNA is a chimera so it would definitely be a chimera...

.what do you get with a mule and horse?...a donkey. A hybrid species. They would called it a chimera but they didn't why?  chimera just sound a bit far fetched  and mythical ( since its origin is from greek myth). and it would make the researchers sound like delusional  dreamer. So they play it safe and just call it a hybrid.

Either way Chimera is unlikely to happen due to species incompatibility to another .

even so, if they cut up parts and mixed it together, i don't think it will last that long and it would be inhumane.

Hmmm... On the one hand, it can be seen as unethical and perhaps borderline disturbing, but on the other hand, it could prove useful in saving lives. I'm going to lean towards the latter by saying it's a good idea. I also think the project needs to be developed further to ensure no side-effects occur regarding the pig.

Just in case you don't know, "Chimera" can be a used as a medical term.

Technically, I don't believe it counts as a hybrid.

I don't find this to be too disturbing. Based on the BBC article (I just scanned it) they haven't created a "pig person"--just a pig with a few human cells.

Joke aside, if this organ farm plan works out it could increase the quality and length of life for millions around the world. This and stem cell research should receive more funding.

nah you're not being jerk, I understand that but it just tick me to hear the word Chimera being use for an hybrid species. knowing that chimera is first originated from greek mythology where it  just the name of an  mythical creature that blow fire and have several parts of a animal bodies and. Using that term  to define today hybrid just seem a bit dramatic and inaccurate. if you know what I mean.

it like they would use that myth creature name in their report to grub people's attention.

I'm in full support of this though; stem cells are amazing and we'd be a fool to not take advantage of this. So many lives could be saved if we could grow full human organs like this. Of course, we get into ethical dilemas when we start talking about the brain, but I almost hope in a morbid sort of way that someone does go down that road. It could advance our knowledge about the brain.

Well, it's not like they're making a half-sapient race of swine-folk. Just pigs with extra human organs for harvesting. As long as it saves lives, I'm on board.

I don't mind. We got the concept of mechanical prosthesis, why not biological too? Because it was grown inside a pig?

On the plus side, you wouldn't be eaten by Jewish cannibals if you were part-pig. "Pretty situational," you might say, but you never know!
