What would you change in the 8th MLP season?

More episodes about the Stident Six. And I'd replace the teaching staff of the friendship school with secondary characters, leaving the Mane 6 as occasional guest lecturers - the Mane 6 should stay focused on their main jobs, IMO.

More focus on the school of friendship, as right now I feel like it's been pushed to the side and isn't really the main focus of the season. In fact, I feel like this season doesn't really have any focus, it's been bouncing around all over the place all season, so one thing I'll do for sure is give it a main focus. Also, we need to see some more development in the student mane six, they're just hollow shells of what they could be at this point, due to not having enough episodes focused on them. There's a lot more that I would do to improve this season, but that's just the main points at least. :adorkable:

Less Rainbow Dash episodes. She's still getting a bunch of useless ones since Season 6.

By the way, I don't want the Student Six to be the new main protagonists at all. Every episode in earlier seasons always featured Spike, Starlight or the CMCs, if not any of the Mane Six. The Student Six didn't even exist before Season 8.

I also know that Pinkie Pie isn't sharing any of her episodes for at least a third time in an entire season (despite having no solo episodes in one season), and she still has yet to share one with a character other than a Mane Six pony.

Not only that, Spike and Discord just got an episode where they appeared but no Mane Six ponies did, and Fluttershy and Pinkie both still need one individually where the rest of the Mane Six aren't seen, as so do the three Princesses and Sunburst.

  1. I think the big thing for me is to focus a bit more on how the mane six are affected by the school. In most mane six focused episodes this season, the show has either brushed off their new responsibilities ("Grannies Gone Wild," "Fake It Till You Make It") or opted for the simplest possible interpretation ("Non-Compete Clause"). I still like having episodes step away from the school here and there, but I'd like to see more episodes which use the school to provide a fresh spin on the mane six's usual quirks and insecurities.
  2. I'd like the school to make more sense in general. How does one teach friendship? What qualifications would be needed to do so? Who can learn friendship? Most important for me would be having people other than the mane six teaching, and I'd love it if not all of them were ponies. Thorax, Gabby, and the yaks demonstrate that friendship isn't exclusively the domain of ponies, and I think the show would be better without the implication of ponies needing to teach other races their values.
  3. In general, I'd want a few episodes to be structured differently so certain characters are made sympathetic or given greater depth before the climax. Why can't Big Mac just talk to Sugar Belle? What does Maud see in Mud Briar? What are Firelight and Stellar Flare's redeeming qualities? In the latter two cases especially, I think getting that information earlier would make those episodes' structures feel less didactic; this is something I've been thinking about in the show since season 6 or so.

Overall, I'm fairly happy with this season, so while those changes would certainly improve it for me, it wouldn't be a night-and-day difference. Mostly those would all just serve to give the season a stronger sense of purpose for me.

Some betrayals would be nice....I mean, just like the ending of the Splatty Tomato episode on South Park, I think Starlight should’ve just betray the Mane Six at the end of School Daze Pt. 2 instead

To be honest, I feel like the Mane 6 have already had enough development- to try to create conflicts with them kinda leads to "forced" episodes like Fake It 'til You Make It and Non-Compete Clause, which, while not terrible in my books, weren't really entertaining and/or felt incoherent.

Instead, I'd rather they focus on the School Six and how they're able to grow their own relationships- maybe even outside of the instruction of the Mane Six. Because, as much as I like the idea of a "new mane six", I'm still very on-the-fence on the idea of a friendship school- it just felt like a convenient way to  get people to buy more toys  create this new story arc, even though one of the main points of the premiere was in fact the idea that friendship isn't something that can be taught in a classroom (so, what's kinda even the point of the school? Is it more like a day camp?). So I feel like if they focused on more natural episode ideas arising out of the School Six - and maybe other students in the school - that have more to do with everyday life than with the school itself, the season might improve.

But then again, I might be totally wrong about all this. I'm not really a writer.

I would actually go back and eliminate any and all references to the movie. The movie wasn't good and introduced the dreaded sea ponies. Blech. I am fine with the hyppogriphs, but the sea ponies are simply dumb. Wouldn't mind them being erased from the canon.

  • 3 years later...

Less focus on the mane 6, more on the students, the character arcs of twilight and her friends were over by that point and all the episodes dedicated to them ruined their characters

Make the Student Six burn for a start, and the whole idea of the School of Friendship in general. Or if they really wanted the School then they shouldn’t force the Mane Six out of their every day jobs that they’ve worked up to for eight years to get lousy jobs as teachers.

Just more Mane Six focus and more of a general focus on characters we actually like and not new ones that they expect us to like but they suck at everything.
