I really like these old, G1-inspired designs, but the current ones look a lot better in the Technicolor universe they've created for the show. Here's some more history for ya!

Of the ones that have actually changed, I prefer the new designs on all of them except Rarity. Rarity I could take either the old or the new. But I didn't know the concept art was so different colour-wise for some of them. I like seeing stuff like this, it's always fun to wonder what might have been had things gone differently.

They look WAY better now. Especially don't like the white/flying Pinkie Pie. The original names just don't sound as fun/interesting either. Posy? Surprise? Firefly? Sparkler? Just doesn't have the same ring to it. Meh. I for one am glad the names/designs had to be changed. It definitely worked out for the best!

I've always been a fan of the "Firefly" design for G4 Rainbow Dash, partially because the old color scheme is kind of cool (and not flashy like how she is now) and as a result gives her an even more "cool" factor, I personally think.

they're interesting as concept-art, but as for using them in the show, the current designs are better. they fit better in with the show's artstyle; the concept art looks like it could do better with a different kind of design to them: Twilight looks extremely old with that white-purple hair, for example.

I quite like Lauren's Surprise and Firefly concept arts. No doubt that the official designs are better, though.

I like the old and new. For some reason though, the old seems to look weird in the actual show. It just dosent fit it with the other colors. But out of old and new

 

Pinkie Pie-Surprise: I like Surprise better. Also, shes a pegasus! Cant you imagine pinkie pies playful personality as a pegasus? her flying around with Rainbow dash and doing loops in the air?

 

Applejack-Applejack: yeah.....Both cause there the same.

 

Rarity-Glory (is her name glory? Cant remember): Rarity! Her white fur makes her look more proper and clean. I dont like the blue

 

Twilight-Twilight sparkle: I like them both, but I think I like TW better. Just, the white mane and pink body dont really fit her personallty to me

 

Firefly-Rainbowdash: Rainbow dash. Bright Pink and blue just dont look good together, also, pink? For RD?

 

Fluttershy-Posy: The same.

I like the new ones a lot better, Twilight and Rainbows concept color scheme are just horrible in my opinion(I like Surprise best out of the concept ponies).

Also their new names are better, Sparkler and Surprise sound like colts.

 

I think it's weird that the original Fluttershy didn't have any wings

 

The only thing that's quite sad is the fact that Lauren wasn't allowed to bring her favorite pony back in G4, but nevertheless this might be one of the rare cases where copyright issues changed something to the better

Pretty cool find. I've always liked seeing the evolution of ideas from inception to full production. Every character from Shang Tsung to Twilight Sparkle has a whole life before anybody even gets to see it!

If this were the case then of course Sparkler is best pony.

 

But it's pretty cool how Applejack stays pretty consistent over the generations and she is the quintessence of consistency in the show. Applejack for most reliable and consistent pony ever. Applejack is 2nd best pony.

Surprise and Twilight's scheme are too bright. Rarity's is alright. I like Firefly's. Sometimes I think Rainbow Dash has it too good that she's a rainbow pony. She still has a beautiful mane.

It's neato to see the evolution of characters. It's for the better that Pinkie and Twi got changed, really couldn't imagine a white-haired Twilight. o.O I like the old RD though the current design suits her better. I find it amusing how Rarity's hair color scheme is what Twilight has now.

Nothing wrong with the concept art, but IMO the final product is better. I find it interesting that Fluttershy was originally going to be an Earth Pony.

I love Sparkler and Suprise quite a lot. Twilight's cool too. Posey is meh, except I LOVE the G1 toy of her. Firefly's nice, and I perfer AJ with her hat.

Pinkie Pie was a pegasus and Fluttershy was an earth pony?

 

Hmm...

 

Y'know, I would have approved of a pegasus Pinkie Pie. There'd be that many more opportunities for her to be wacky. Though, Fluttershy kind of needs the wings even more, and if BOTH were pegasi, that'd ruin the delicate 2-of-each balance they have going.

Twilight's color scheme bothers me, as does Rainbow's, to a lesser extent. I can only say this in comparison to the current and final designs. I would probably be just fine with their colors had they been chosen to be included in the final product.

 

As it stands, however, those two in particular bother me. Surprise (who became Pinkie Pie) doesn't have a lot of clashing colors, so I could roll with her design.

I don't think I would like Pinkie Pie that much as Surprise. If she was a Pegasus then everything she did would just be her powers as a Pegasus.

 

Pulse I kinda like the balance the charters have with each other. Like 3 are prime definition of the type they belong to and the other 3 arent. Like Rainbow Dash is a good flyer and Fluttershy is an alright flyer, Apple Jack is good at farming and Pinkie Pie has other powers, and Twilight is great with magic and Rarity can only do a few things.

 

Also the color for them just don't look right.

Uh, those wouldn't be their names. They would be Twilight, Sparkler, Posey, Firefly, Applejack, and Surprise. The names can't be used in a case against them, cause the names were changed along with the art.
