I believe 4chan's where everything pony-related was born: the artwork (nasty and not), the fans (nice and trolls) and... well, everything. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

 

I've heard this name for years, but I've never actually visited the site at least once in my life. I've never felt the urge to see what's going on there. To be honest, I was also kind of scared of 4chan's hugeness and wanted to stay away from it. I have a few question though.

 

What exactly is 4chan? Is it a forum just like this one?

What's its fanbase like? Is it nice and friendly like this one?

Should I be thankful to it because of the MLP fanbase we have today?

Should I sign up and follow it to stay informed about the latest memes and whatnot?

I respect 4chan, you have to, 90% of all memes originated there or where popularized there. So in a nutshell:

 

4chan: Respect it

 

9gag: Show no respect, they're not worth the effort.

I use to visit 4chan's /b/ section daily for quite some time, but the mass amounts of gore/animal abuse and child abuse threads just finally sickened me to the point that i stopped.

4Chan is basically an imageboard, where you can post one image along with your every posts. 4Chan have a lot of sub boards, each with their own unique community and subculture

Everything about 4chan varies greatly, depends on which board you are referring. on /tg/ everyone is rather cool, but on /b/ all hell broke loose

Thanks to both /co/ and /b/ MLP managed to break the demographic barrier and be this popular. We must respect that, but everything from those two boards must be taken with a grain of salt, and a peck of troll

Nope. You can participate in their discussion without any registering. Most of the users are anonymous anyhow.

 

If you want to stay up-to-date with FiM memes and stuff, 4Chan is not the best place due to its random behavior, which is to be expected when almost everyone is a faceless account. I suggest this forum or EQD instead

I used to be a huge 4chan wackjob, but then I stopped going and I'm glad I did that. 4chan is an awful place, awful community, little to no order or moderation, and is just full of assholes. I also say this quite a lot: FiM was going to be big even without 4chan, it's just that 4chan simply sped up the process.

So I'm gonna edit this because truth be told I recently did a few serious posts on /mlp/ regarding Double Rainboom being taken down and they were the only ones to believe me on that which later on was proven as a fact and just post my much more modern opinions I guess you can say. 4chan's alright. I used to post there and quit but I was on /b/ most the time so yeah that's kind of why it was an awful community. I' still not gonna regular on there much though because quire frankly I prefer this group of dweebs but hey.

Something Awful is pretty big in meme's too. It just doesn't get mentioned as much these days.

I'm not really sure. For all the time I've spent on the internet, 4chan is one of those sites I never really wanted to go on. I've heard good and bad things about it. I DO know that MLP:FiM started it's rise to stardom through this site, with all the memes it produced.

 

Now, off topic, but I've also heard of the site 9gag, yet I've never been on it also. I've heard a LOT of bad things about it though, and I sorta wanna know why. Is it 4chan's evil brother (As if 4chan wasn't evil enough for some people)? Like, be specific on why so many people don't like it

I understand its a major site but 4chan doesn't appeal to me. I'll let other people go to it if they want, but from my general experience 4chan and severe bitterness seem to go hand in hand. By no means am I saying that you're automatically a spiteful scrooge if you go to 4chan, but the environment to the site generally gives me bad vibes.

 

I know they kickstarted the MLP phenomenon and there are occasionally funny images that see their birth at 4chan but I wouldn't wade through the mire in a sewer just because word around the street is a gold nugget is down there.

Unlike 4chan, nothing on 9gag can be considered evil - it's a meme site, but it's also known as a "cancer" site if you will; it spreads unfunny memes everywhere like cancer and the jokes aren't even funny.
