What is your opinion of the old generations?

G1 had influence, LF redid everything and made a whole new series with G4.

Yeah, that summarizes my views. From what I've read, Lauren Faust pitched G4 as what she made of G1, with the characters advanced a bit because she was a professional now, instead of a child playing with toys.

 

In other words, she saw the show, bought the toys, played with them, and what we're seeing now in G4 is a lot of what she imagined. Sheesh. Talk about a dream come true!

 

Anyways, she's great at doing characters, and that's why I'm here for G4. I liked powder puff girls so many years ago. I saw only a few minutes of "Fosters Home", and I immediately recognized the show did an excellent job with the characters, enough to gain my respect (but I still didn't like it that much. It was a tad too odd for me.), and she did even better with MLP. Kudos.

Oh, yes, and I'm gonna go watch some G4 as brain bleach, perhaps to purge my mind of the old generations...

 

Those horses... I find them uncanny... They scare me...

And from what I've seen, the voice acting is absolutely horrible, the characters are all the same, lifeless puppets and the plots are boring to tears.

 

Maybe there's some exceptions, but...

My biggest issue with the first three generations is (especially G1 and G3) simply the way the show reeks of the stereotypical girl stereotypes, like tea parties, everyone wanting to be a princess, etc. I recall G1 having some plot-oriented episodes, but the overall quality of the cartoon was lacking. Of course, for it's time it was probably a decent production effort overall. Anyway, the constant stereotypes make me cringe whenever I've tried to watch an older generation show. Thankfully, G4 is in a league of its own.

I liked the old pony shows when I was about seven years old, but now that I discovered FiM, I'll just leave the oldies be.This is so much better.

But, to be honest, I kind of like the 2006-2008 pony stuff. Y'know, Sparkleworks and Twinkle Twirl and Minty and those gals.

I've got about 16 old ponies (now i mean the 06's ponies) and two super-old ones (made in the 80's or so).. And some fake ones which I won't even count as ponies

G1: Pilot was amazing! Kind of an annoying theme song though. Firefly was kind of fun! Defiantly an older Rainbow Dash!

 

G2: Better. I like the bit of realism in it. Considering I'm a teen and around these ponies ages, I can see a bit of relation between these.

Bon-bon was defiantly a lot of fun! Her and Teddy make a weird, but also a nice couple! It did have more character than G1

 

G3, G3.5- I don't care what anypony says, I kind of like them! Maybe just because of Minty and Sunny Daze. Minty was the funny, clutz pony, and SD was the tomboy of the group. They pull those characteristics off alright.

I never watched any of the earlier gens. From the looks of it, the first one looks bearable, but the "RAINBOW DASH ALWAYS DRESSES IN STYLE" cartoon looks downright cringeworthy. >< However, if it wasn't for the earlier gens, there wouldn't be FiM, so there's that to be thankful for.

The older generations were terrible because Fluttershy wasn't in them. Ok, being serious (well that's partially why), from what I've seen of G1 and G2, it was G3 and G3.5 that was bad, though I've never really seen anything of G3.5 except for a song from Twinkle Wish Adventure that I surprisingly enjoyed, and baby scootaloo if you count that. I've seen bronies watch 2 of the G3 movies (apparently G3 was just a few movies oddly) and they were just plain terrible, flat cardboard characters who barely differed from one another in what little personality they had, and badly written, boring, stupid plots.

I don't like them personally. I find them lame, uninspiring with dull characters and next to no plot. This is partly why I was skeptical of G4 right out of the gate, but I think G4 is the first generation they put serious effort into, and It really shows.

I hate the past gens art design, but I usually have a neutral opinion on Gen 1 since it's the original, Gen 3 and especially 3.5 make go NO! in disgust, I really don't know much about Gen 2 to say anything about it though

Show:

G1: Not bad, if the VAing was better I'd like it more. The characters are flat as well

G2 (or G1.5, since G2 technically didn't have an animated series): I haven't watched anything yet... so I can't judge it

G3: Ehh, not too big of a fan

G3.5: I dislike. Barely got through an episode

G4: Must I say...? xP

 

Toyline:

G1: Not the best again. They were awkward looking in my opinion, but I still like them

G2: These are the 2nd worst in my opinion. I thought they looked weird looking

G3: Probably my favourite. They looked realistic (which is a good quality in my eyes), yet still had a cartoony charm to them

G3.5: Ugh, no. I might like them if they didn't have such weird looking mouths, which is a problem in the G2 series, and were just over all the worst of the group

G4: Take out all the G3.5 imitations and awkward looking plushes and I'd say it's a good toyline. These are the only ones I own, along with a G3 pony
