Twilight Sparkle Alicorn/Princess Speculation [SPOILERS]

Let's see this in the context of the synopsis.

 

This is probably Twilight's ascension to the equivalent of Star Swirl by probably attempting an ultra-tier spell, but of course, she manages to screw things up and this is essentially a "life swap" episode.  If my assumptions of the synopsis are correct, they will probably swap roles and positions and basically rewrite the entire universe.  And I'm thinking likely with ponies that are closer to each other.

 

(An interesting twist to add would probably to have Twilight be the only one who actually remembers her past self, thus has to work alone)

 

Hence why I'm thinking that Twilight, when she switches destinies, will switch with her mentor, Princess Celestia.  Becoming an Alicorn.  From here, she has to find a way to rewrite the magic spell she set off, using her alicorn powers, to reverse everything. (And at the same time, we finally get a little snippet of Celestia's life... Maybe a bit of personal thoughts of hers)

 

And because of this, I'm sitting here comfortably while watching the rage across the internet with so many people who are jumping the shark.

Something I'd like to see is Celestia teaching Twilight dark magic. As Celestia demonstrated her ability to do so in same said preview upon darkening the crystal so that it mimicked King Sombra's power, she knows said magic. Twilight, as the Element of Magic, is almost obligated to learn about the dark arts at some point; maybe not use them regularly obviously, but to learn about them and study them nonetheless.

Sorry, but I feel the need to jump in here. The extended cut, while it did make the ending better, didn't "fix everything" it just made the abysmal ending acceptable. Not great, not good, just acceptable. It took away that...numbness, for lack of a better word, I had when I first beat the game.

 

But while we're on the subject of crappy endings. I would like to point out that no matter how bad (or not, anything is possible) this whole Twilight Alicorn thing turns out to be, there will be more pony, as season 4 is on the way. So while we might not like the direction the show takes, this isn't the end of the line. The future, no matter how scary, is not set in stone.

Not necessarily.  We know these things:

 

a. Twilight becomes an alicorn

b. Synopsis states Twilight botches a spell and causes ponies to switch destinies and roles (likely a reality-altering spell

c. Title of episode is "Princess Coronation"

d. The synopsis and title appear to be unrelated

e. There are three distinct alicorns Twilight can possibly switch roles with

 

Thus, I can clearly assume that Twilight becoming an alicorn most likely has something to do with Twilight messing up the destiny spell.  And from there, look at and speculate different possibilities of resolution.

I understand why people seem so irked by the idea of Twilight becoming an alicorn AND a princess.

The alicorns we see in the show are way more powerful than the average unicorn. That is because Miss Faust made Celestia and Luna to be the only alicorns and people just threw Cadance in the middle. It worked out. Fans love Cadance. Everybody wins.

 

The original idea of the alicorns seems to be that they were supposed to be almost godlike, as Miss Faust said that she left Celestia's powers undefined on purpose. But then Faust left the show and we got new ideas. Now, it seems that alicorns are not that special anymore and maybe even ponies can become alicorns through some means. An then, all the alicorns we know are princesses! And Twilight is going to be one too!

 

Personally, I think that the staff behind the show can make it work, but the more I think about it it seems that the show is getting "generic". Princesses all around! Alicorns galore! This is an exaggeration, but the idea behind it is eating away the original show in my opinion. One of the things I really liked here was the idea that their friendship is the great power that can conquer any danger/obstacle/slice of life problem the Mane Six came across. But also, there's this powerful and wise, benevolent entity that takes care of Equestria. It's a very "medieval" idea, but Celestia is the ultimate power in Equestria (along with her sister and Discord), and she watches over Equestria. Now with her sister back it's like Equestria was complete again. This station was symbolized by Celestia and Luna being the ponies which embodied the special magic of all three tribes.

 

The Mane Six where the "Champions of Equestria" that got to live their own lives but where also sent in missions when it was needed, such as in the episodes Friendship is Magic, Dragonshy and Return of Harmony. It's about the Elements of Harmony. Luna and Celestia can't use them anymore, so these ponies that hold these "virtues" of the Elements will wield them when needed. The great thing about this is that they are not perfect, making them great characters that seem alive.

 

The point I'm trying to make here is that it turns Equestria into almost an utopia where you have this (or these two) old, wise and benevolent ruler that uses her "champions" to solve problems that arise. This works because we ca assume that unlike on Earth, this government is not corrupt and would work for the betterment of it's citizens' lives. Because, as much as Rarity is not always very generous, she would not make use of station to satisfy her greed. (Assuming that would be her long term development in Celestia's plan)

 

But then came Cadance. And just like that alicorns feel more just like another sub-species of pony. And then Celestia got her flank kicked by that bug with a very bad excuse just so that Celestia can't save the day. And now ponies can turn into princesses and even become alicorns. Equestria is now a weird democracy where the divine right of ruling is passed down to those whom happen to have wings and a horn at the same time.

 

Because "every girl wants to be a princess"... <sigh>...

 

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Twilight developing and even becoming a princess or even an alicorn. I can live with that. Even like it. I saw her on the "highway to power" from episode one as we learn she's Celestia's student. But when they make her a princess along with becoming an alicorn... I feel like it's a change too deep to a basic premise of the show and has to be done in exemplary quality of storytelling or it's going to be forced, and rushed. Add to that the fact that it's going to happen in 22 minutes... To me it's a sign that the show is falling apart and it better end before it turns into another Spongebob.

 

EDIT: Of course... Assuming that this is all going to happen and that the change is not temporary, as the synopsis seems to indicate.

The problem here is that it breaks the foundation of the show. All of the mane 6 are supposed to be equals. Now that Twilight is an alicorn she is superior to them in anyway. If they make her faster than Rainbow Dash I will be pissed. They could just rename the show "Twilight: I'm an Alicorn and my friends are useless"

It's not the writers I'm worried about. They've proven time after time that they know damn well what they're doing. It's Hasbro that concerns me. They've been meddling more and more with the show and it, well...shows. Granted, the FiM writers have done an amazing job at working around whatever Hasbro throws at them, but with this Alicorn thing...I just don't see any good way to pull it off while not alienating a sizable portion of the fanbase. But the writers have yet to let us down, so there is still hope they can pull this off (or at least minimize the damage) and I wish them the best of luck.

Okay, moving on to another semi-related issue.

Yes, I am also fully aware and admit that we (the Bronies) are NOT the target audience for the show. But you can't deny that we played a large part in the show becoming the success it is today. Now, this doesn't mean that we're "owed" anything, because we're not. But it does explain the outrage. The fans who are angry feel like they've been betrayed, even if it is or isn't justified. They supported and loved the show for what it was about, the magic of friendship. But now Twilight is better than her friends in every way, you can't deny it. Because Alicorn  > every other pony race. It's (in the angry fan's mind) no longer about friendship, it's about, and I quote, "Becoming a Princess! Just like every girl wants!" In their minds, it's a complete destruction of everything the show stands for. I'm not siding with them, not yet anyway, but I understand why they're so upset.

Anyway, while I'm nervous about all of this, there's nothing any of us can do until the episode airs. Here's hoping that all of this drama is just us blowing it out of proportion.

This really isnt true. If it were all of the main six would be useless in comparison to Celestia,Luna, and Cadence. However as has been seen in the show time and time again this is not the case. Can you name one instance where an alicorn has saved the world or ended conflict in the show by herself. I don't think so because it hasn't happened.  The elements of harmony have been used far more often and they cant be used without the harmony of all of the elements. Without one of them they are all useless. 

If you read the synopsis for the episode it has many interesting implications. I myself am more excited then I have been so far having read it.

The foundation of the show has been laid out by Mrs. Faust. Plenty of evidence suggests that the current season is where the story became largely independent of her influence in the MLP:FiM universe.

Actually the episode is titled The Magical Mystery Cure. I think hasbro is just hyping up the princess deal to sell toys, hence Princess Coronation. The synopsis is focused on the switching of destinies and cutie marks and mentions Twilight will have to make magic to fix this. They are over blowing alicorn twilight(just as we are). Kinda like when a movie hypes up an actor and that actor only appears in the movie for like two seconds.

I support this.  Writers haven't failed us yet.  They won't now.  I mean, Twi has always been OP'd.  At the most, there'll be a friendship lesson about staying friends when something changes.

The more I think about it, the change being abrupt, accidental, and reversible is the only logical explanation.

 

Why?

 

There's been no buildup to this specific event in recent episodes. Sure, she's become stronger and wiser as a unicorn, and there's been foreshadowing about her possible future role as a princess, but to go from completely adorkable student to full alicorn princess in just 22 minutes - especially when it's not even the main plot of the episode -well...an accident is the only reasonable explanation.

half hearted to me as a fan in truth.   So far also there

If the idea is that Twilight gets alicorn-hood due to switching destinies with an Alicorn, then it *can't* be permanent, because that would mean one of the current alicorns would be losing their wings permanently in response.

 

Unlikely to do that to Celestia, and if you think the nerd-rage over Alicorn Twilight is bad, imagine the response to a de-princessified Luna.

 

Unless it happens to an Alicorn that wouldn't care about becoming just a normal pony. Because she was written into the show due to a manufacturing error in the toy line anyway, and Hasbro could just issue a unicorn version of the toy without much effort.

 

Say, a pony that is about to have a Coronation as the official Crystal Princess.

I'm not quite sure where people are assuming "become an alicorn, you're a god(dess) now".

 

For all we know, it could literally just be Twilight with wings without the random god-power-up.

 

Last time I checked, Cadence isn't an all-powerful alicorn goddess like Celestia and Luna. Yes, it took her and Shining Armor to defeat Chrysalis who defeated Celestia from Shining Armor's love, but that's just it. It took both of them. And it took the emotions of a unicorn for Chrysalis to gain enough power to defeat Celestia.

 

What I just said may be a bit shaky, but the bottom line is: The episode has yet to air. We still don't know what's going to happen. We shouldn't be overthinking it.

 

(Personally, I could care less what happens. I've got better things to do than rage at shows/games just because they're not 100% what I want.)

Whew! After reporting the news to the Bronies Australia forums early this morning and the news finally beginning to settle in, I thought I throw in my two cents on the whole situation.

First off, my reaction to the news is a bit of a mixed bag. On a positive note, I'm actually proud for Twilight going to the "next level" and becoming a princess. She has come a long way from being a character that some people love to hate due to being annoying and all in season one to becoming a fan favourite today. 

But, on the other side of the coin, there are fans (not naming anyone) who are going a bit hysterical and running around in circles like crazy by the announcement.

Although I am a bit concerned about the future of the franchise although a fourth season has been confirmed in the works by DHX. Although the worst that could probably happen is that Hasbro retires the "Friendship is Magic" generation after the season three finale and begin a new 5th generation of the franchise, which in turn marks the 30th anniversary this year. 

This latest development and the announcement has some similarities to another situation that happened but with a different show. Many Australian bronies may know of a TV game show that was popular back in the mid to late 80's and early 90's called Sale of the Century with the legendary Tony Barber at the hosting helm for many years. In 1991, Tony left the show and was replaced with Glenn Ridge, a television personality who worked for several regional television stations in Victoria (Australian state) including BCV-8 and GMV-6 in the 80's.

When Glenn first began hosting Sale, there were a few people who hated the host change and boycotted the show from that point onwards. However, as time went on, Glenn began to become accepted more and more as the years passed until the show finally ended it's run in the early part of the 2000's.

This latest development and the announcement has some similarities to the whole "Sale" saga all those years ago.

With this example, it goes to show that some people will actually welcome the change, while others won't. So in summary, there isn't much to worry about.

If they do this, goodbye MLP. I know bronies aren't the intended audience, but if it wasn't for us, FIM would not be as popular as it is today. As other people have stated, alicorns are the most dominating race of ponies. If Twilight becomes one, what will become of her friends? Will they turn into background ponies? Will the mane six no longer be relevant and a new mane six is comprised of Lyra, Bon Bon, Derpy, DJ-PON3, Berry Punch, and Colgate? All of these questions make me shudder.

 

Now if she becomes an alicorn, but it is all a dream, or a what if scenario like a test that Princess Celestia puts her through, to see if she is capable, I'd be fine with it. As long as Twilight reverts back to her adorkable unicorn self at the end of the episode, of course. But in all honesty, I'm very against this idea. If Hasbro does go through with it, they will lose alot of fanbase, and a lot of money.

The problem doesn't lie in something becoming an alicorn, it's just who for me.

Twilight's appearance in no shape or form suits royalty compared to Celestia, her bookworm personality and geeky appearance seems right as it is. Making her larger with giant wings just destroys her as a character...

She's also far too young to be one too, in that one Rarity episode she partied like crazy. 

She's a Unicorn and it makes sense, an Alicorn doesn't fit for her.

Not princess of entire country material...

 

Another problem that i have is that there are two of each race in the mane six

Two Pegasai

Two Unicorns

Two Earth Ponies

It keeps it balanced

Not only does Twilight not fit appearance and sometimes personality wise, it throws off the balance of the other characters in general. 

 

And the worst part is that it's somewhat confirmed on the Hub facebook page...

She even has the wings and everything.

And the rumors even make sense due to the past things that have happened to her.

But Twilight herself shouldn't be the one.

 

This will obviously be the last season, I can't think of a single way to continue with Twilight as the princess of Equestria or Just an Alicorn in general. The other character's will probably be neglected and everything after will just be about her. And I don't even like Twilight in the first place very much.

 

It could of even been Shining Armor and i would of been fine, having a male Alicorn would give some positive things at least.

 

I can't judge the episode itself, but the whole "Twilight becoming an Alicorn" I feel is just wrong...

I want to add that that is my reaction to her becoming an Alicorn and reigning on Equestria forever like Celestia.

This was stated in the Wiki of the episode itself.

Twilight accidentally casts a spell that switches the Cutie Marks and destinies of all her friends. The only way she can reverse the spell is by writing her own magic."

Meaning that it might just be some freak magic thing and that it's not permanent in any way.

Explaining her becoming an alicorn with a 'destiny changing dealy-o' and will be taken away by the end.

I don't see how this will be a good season ending though, seeing they usually have a cool villain that appears. 

 

So everyone should just wait and see before going too far with it.
