How do the ponies of Equestria go to the bathroom?

A lot of cartoons NEVER show a character going potty, unless it's for a gag (like frenetically running around looking for the toilet). So do live-action shows, for that matter.

Also, when the baby Cakes were born, we never saw the mother lying in bed exhausted after labor. Much less, of course, during it. O.O

 

Does that mean fictional characters have no such basic need, or that babies in MLP just grow on mud like Saruman's orcs?

They all do their business I am certainly not going to poo poo that lest I risk being in deep doodie I don't want people here to think I am full of it. Okay okay I couldn't resist the opportunity for a little toilet humor, yes I think there are toilets in Equestria and I think that Celestia probably has the grandest throne of all I mean she has to deal with other ponies crap all day so the less she has to deal with her own the better. Celestia is like the plunger for all of Equestria's problems I guess you can say she has a royal flush.

Outhouses are usually constructed over a deep hole dug in the ground, with no plumbing at all. That's why the structure is so light. It periodically has to be moved to a new hole, and the old one is filled in. I think you've hit on the right answer here though. I think of pony outhouses as not even having a seat. It's just a hole for a pony to stand over, with the walls providing a bit of modesty. If a pony is just walking down a dirt road (dirt roads are canon) and nopony else is around, they just do what any equine does. If you know anything about horses, then you know that they don't even break stride! Ponies of Equestria are civilized though, and do not wish to embarrass themselves or their friends. Plus, they like to keep their towns and villages tidy and hygienic. Nopony wants to track their business into the house! To be bluntly honest, I do not think ponies have even invented toilet paper!

Of course they have to... somewhere... all herbivores produce a sh**ton of crap. And like in most shows you don't see the characters often use the toilet. 

 

Imho they have outhouses, or some kind of similar facilities. It's kinda hard to judge how private do they consider doing their business (considering they run around naked most of the time) but all of the roads are clean and nopony has made a joke about stepping into something so far...  they have to have specific places to go. 

 

That's my headcanon. Boring and reasonable.

the others?"

"Charmain is 2 bits a roll and no name is half a bit per roll."

The pony doesn't have much money so she opts for the no name.

Within a few hours she is back at the trading post. "I have a name for the
no name toilet paper," she announces to the clerk. "We shall call it
Rainbow Dash."

"Why?" asks the confused clerk.

Cartoon logic doesn't typically handle this sort of thing. Even if they have bathrooms they would never go into the details. Too realistic, too detailed, too gruesome unless it could be used in a joke somehow like dealing with cow manure or something.

They have outhouses, but I've always thought they don't have toilets. It would be much easier for an equine to stand over a trench slit in the ground or floor than to try and sit on a toilet.
(Except for Lyra, of course)
