Spike needs more love and appreciation.

First off, his design is adorable.  Not just puppy Spike, but also dragon Spike, too.

If I had to say what got me to start really liking Spike, I'd say it had to be how he was in EQG.  He was treated with a lot more respect and dignity by the writers(and the characters) than he was in the show at that point, with the exception of a few episodes in season 2.

After all, he is treated like a king by human Fluttershy.

I really liked how he treated Sunset in Rainbow Rocks, and he actually got to help save the day in that movie too!

This part really made me laugh.

I love Spike and Smolder's relationship.  Smolder is such a great teacher for Spike and it opened up a lot of interesting possibilities for both Spike and Smolder.

Spike got the best episode of season 6, The Times They are a Changeling, and one of my favorite Spike moments is the moment when Spike risks his reputation at the Crystal Empire to help Thorax.

I've always loved Spike right from the start. i thought he was cute and his snark was usuallty hiliarous. It's why it's so frustrating how inconsistent the orignal writers were with Spike, before Josh took over as story editor his best season was 4 and that's because they actually drew on stuff that was set up for him in Crystal empire that being his severe lack of self worth and insecurites. Power Ponies and Equestria Games focused on that while Inspiration manifestation had him having to actually criticize his crush even if it meant losing her as a friend which was a pretty good way to move that part of his charachter forward too. Secret of my excess in my opinon is also pretty good but the rest range from decent to god awful, Spike at your service is easily the worst episode of the show at least for me. Almost all of the main charachters act out of charachter and i just despie how even the writing itself was making Spike look horrible. Like why in gods name would Applejack put eggs on a needlessly high self? Oh right it's so they can go "hey see Spike is bad he can't reach it."

 

Ahem rant aside my point is I've been of the opinion that though the orignal writers were great their attitudes kinda held the show back especially in regards to Spike. So once season 6 came around and I saw how much better he was being treated I felt happy about new writers coming in. They certainly seemed to understand him alot better, I know Josh did'nt write all of his episodes but it's kinda hard not to see that Spike was one of his favorite charachters next to Starlight. Since whenever Josh wrote a two parter Spike always had some kind of role to play in it, To where and back again was an exception and even though i do kinda wish he was included in the group I also underdstand the theme he was going for and everyone else was captured too so that's the exception. Plus Josh is also responsible for giving Spike his wings too. I have always seen him as a main charachter just like Starlight and I am very happy that he did not leave the series on a sour note, (his future design aside uggh.)

Sometimes I feel like I'm the ONLY person who understands Spike. In many situations Spike has been through, I been through it too. Being left out of a group, having an unclaimed crush, feeling held back from true potential and feeling like it's no big deal, dedicating alot of time to help others with little reward and appreciation, and worst of all: not tell anyone how he truly feels deep down just dealing with it himself - I been through ALL that stuff! The show not getting into this stuff fully, it feels personal. 

I can get over stuff eventually, but this, this problems ALWAYS comes back to haunt me. Spike can fool everyone, he can even fool himself, but he can't fool me - he IS me! Hypothetically.  People think I'm just making this stuff up - have THEY ever been in these situations before? 

But I learned recently that I can't convince people otherwise no matter how much I try. Only the series can do it, or Cathy Weseluck herself, but what are the chances? 

He's a better friend than literally everyone else in the show, and nobody even knows it. He might as well be a Tree of Harmony in dragon form, that's how much of a great friend he is. I don't care if he doesn't want it, I don't care if he doesn't need it - he DESERVES it!
