Is Rarity deep down a brawler?

A Talking Dragon

Recommended Posts

This a theory from a forum I frequent: Rarity is a lot stronger than she appears and she tappers it down to be a lady.

Rarity is able to fight surprisingly well given the type of pony she portrays herself as. Also, she's done some surprising things that doesn't seem possible for one of her character:

- Without thinking she kicked a manticore in the face
- She shows no fear in going up a mountain to seek a dragon, despite worrying about fashion, she treks all the way up there like the others
- Unlike Twilight, Rarity doesn't instantly resort to magic when facing someone. The only time she has used magic against another was at the sleepover, and even then, she tried to match Applejack without it
- Rarity showed no fear when being held by the diamond dogs

- She was actually able to plow through solid rock to get to Tom
- She high kicks Applejack to the ground and drives her back physically rather than with magic
- She carries a large boulder, with Applejack on it at one point, without having problems
- Sweetie Belle and her do surprisingly well in an all around physical competition

- Carried up a mountain by a crazed dragon, once more she doesn't show the fear one would expect
- She puts up her dukes to defend Spike
- She fairs well on her own against the changelings, right hooking many in the face

A reason Rarity could be a brawler is likely due to her and her parents clashing on life and style choices as she grew up. The person who came up with this theorizes that since Rarity's father was likely into sports (hence the football cutie mark), he might have pushed Rarity to be more active since he had no sons, and even as Rarity decided to step away from her parent's choices as she grew up, falling into the other extreme, the marks of being pushed by a sports driven father are still present.

Some of these marks are also present in her little sister, Sweetie Belle, who manage to bend a tree (S2. ep 12) and pull a large cart of Rarity's stuff with Scootaloo sleeping in the back (S3. ep.6).

Summing it up, I think Rarity could be pretty good at brawling. Many fans see her fighting very delicately, but I think she would more likely to slug it out.

Well, yeah, kind of. I think it's since she wants things her way and wouldn't stop at anything to get it. Kind of ironic since she's the element of Generosity.

That's an interesting theory. I do not see Rarity as the stereotypical damsel in distress/drama queen. Yes she's classy, and uptight but she can kick ass if she wants to and can very well defend herself, which Is why I admire her character.

Indeed, and this is one of the reasons I love Rarity's character so much, she just has so many layers.

Everything about her, from her fake accent, her unstylish and energetic family, and her aforementioned physicality, all points to Rarity as being a working-class pony who really wants to be a member of the high-society, and will do anything to project this image. But when push comes to shove, her true roots show through and she shows everyone she's not as delicate as she'd have you believe.

You actually make some really decent points. It just proves that Rarity is a complex character. So it seems that Rarity is a bit more like Applejack then she'd like to admit?  :P

Wow that would add some depth if they ever decide to go into her back story I for one would love so see her change from a pony much like applejack into the pony we all know and love today. Plus it would strengthen my shiping with the two of them if applejack was the one asking her and making smug comments as rarity told the story:) it could also add depth to applejack showing her that people change preparing her for when appleblom grows up and changes!!!! ^_^  B)  ^_^

But seriously, Rarity is many, many, many things due to her awesome and complex character, and the fact that she tends to get physical more often than using her magic(which is maily relegated to levitation when dressmaking and finding gems) just shows how awesome she really is, a fair lady with a fair fist(er, hoof, whatever) to back it up! She can be and has been when she has had to be though she tends to do so only when other less physical means are not an option. Rarity may have been able to take out some of the diamond dogs is she decided to attack them but knew that outsmarting them was not only more desirable but also a better strategy.

I don't think Sweetie's the same in some aspects since she was struggling to pull the cart full of shat her sister brought, though, I always had the idea that the crusaders were all pretty strong. Scootaloo carries three ponies, a cart load of items, and Pinkie at some point. Apple Bloom is also pretty strong, being that she's not at all hurt by apples falling in the basket, which would weigh a lot. And Sweetie, she's pretty strong as well since Rarity also uses her probably for certain other things too. I think in the scene, it was to show how far Rarity would go and how far Sweetie's determined to have her there. Then again, that's inconsistent since they couldn't even hold back Spike from taking Scootaloo's scooter.

Anyways, Rarity should be that strong. I'm sure she is really powerful, but its during those special moments where she lets her projection down. (Its like how in Big Bang Theory, Sheldon is really strong from playing football, but he never really used it until Lenard really didn't want him to)

Well, her dad is a quarterback, so it'd make sense. It's obvious that her proper behavior and accent was something she learned and refined over a period of time. She chose to be who she is. Doesn't stop her from ripping some punk dragons to pieces from time to time.

I always thought about this in the back of my head, and it does seem true Rarity is quite the powerhouse, but she either decides not to use it, or she doesn't know her own strength. Of course, she doesn't wants to use it because she considers herself a lady, which is who she is. She is not as strong as Applejack, but she definitely is fit to fight.

I've always thought of this aspect of Rarity. She is ever-so prim and proper, but when things go astray she can defend herself. However, I don't think she is a brawler at all. More than likely I would say she is "anti-brawler." We have to ask the question though,

"Where did she get these skills?"

Here is my theory, Rarity growing up probably learned from her parents, especially her father. Which made her a bit tom-boyish in her earlier years. However, as she grew older she became interested in dresses and glamour that she wanted to push away from that life-style and become quote, "The pony everypony should know." Once she came of age she pursued her dream and became quite successful. Secretly off to the side though, she probably mastered one or two crazy pony martial arts.

So no, she's not a brawler but she can deliver a sick right hook and defend herself without the use of petty magic.

I guess she's just a Rarity ;) and that's why we love her.

Proud to Be a Brony Song:

"So I'm gonna mention Rarity and how she's oh so lady like,

But even though she's prim and proper, she could make it in a fight!"

For some reason I imagine Rarity doing that pre-fight planning thing in her mind that Sherlock Holmes does in the movies.

I think this should just about answer the question. "Rip you to pieces"?, yep, Rarity's a brawler, and this is why I like her. She isn't entirely a mare of etiquette, and in some cases she can and will deviate from that, as you listed.

@@A Talking Dragon, I think you have already answered the question. I can't really add anything to it, she is obviously a brawler. It has probably something to do with her parents, we will probably see something about her childhood explaining why she is that way.

I like Rarity, she is a diamond. Beautiful and as tough as a diamond.

You're just now noticing this? Rarity has always been pretty much one of the most physical ponies in the show. Only RD and Applejack out of the Mane 6 have been shown to get physical as often as she does. Her line from "Dragon Quest" pretty much settles this...

"Fighting's not really my thing... I'm more into fashion... BUT I'LL RIP YOU TO PIECES IF YOU TOUCH ONE SCALE ON HIS CUTE LITTLE HEAD!"

Only thing in the OP I wanted to mention is that Twilight is effectively the only pony to rely on magic so quickly because her specialty, even her element, is magic. Typically, unicorns' magic helps them in whatever their specialty is. For Rarity, it's anything to do with fashion, such as sewing and locating diamonds in the rocks. Similarly, Trixie's magic is for tricks and illusions, unlike Twilight who's shown exceptional skill in any kind of magic (even Rarity's ability to locate diamonds). When it comes to confrontations, Rarity's magic wouldn't really be suited for them the same way Twilight's would be, thus why she'd have to be more physical anyways. Otherwise, I agree with everything :D

She's a somewhat materialistic pony, but when someone makes her angry, she's not afraid to attack. It doesn't usually happen, but when it does, she wins every fight.
