I saw something about a French horn being a woodwind...? Thy only time they have anything to do with each other is in a woodwind quintet, which is comprised of a flute, an oboe, a clarinet, a bassoon and a French horn. (I'm in one, we always pick on our horn player. : P )

As for my favorite category... I'd definitely have to say woodwinds. I'm a little biased, I'll admit (I play flute) (and piccolo), but pretty much all my favorite instruments are woodwinds (except for trombones, 'cause bones are awesome). Flutes are nice, but I prefer clarinets and oboes in solo repertoire. My bestest friend ever plays clarinet (extremely well) and his phrase shaping just...uurrrr it just gives me chills. The same goes for oboes, and they have such a lovely pure sound (when played well). (Plus oboe is super fun to say.)

I play a woodwind, but I have a deep love for the strings. There is something beautiful about the way stringed instruments play together, I absolutely love that sound. I am an envious somewhat experienced clarinetist and I would love to learn to play either a violin or cello someday.

Woodwind section is best section :D

Clarinets and Saxophones for life! <3 I also love the brass section. I sincerely believe that the Bass Trombone is one of the sexiest instruments ever when played with a good tone. It just sounds so.... full. :D

I would like to mention some awesome instruments that haven't been getting much love in this thread. The mandolin is a really pretty instrument. Sadly the play tends to spend as much time tuning them as playing them since they go out of tune so easily. Baritone Sax is really a massive instrument but really adds good sound to a band. Then there is bassoon, Grandpa's theme anyone?

Sorry if I'm all up in this thread, I'm a total instrumentation nerd.

Ooh this is hard. I have always been partial to brass and strings. The only reason I pick string over brass wind is because I feel it is more versatile. String instruments have a place in nearly every genre while brass tends to be more limited. Also bass violin was the first instrument I learned and it has a special place in my heart.

Percussion FTW! I can say from experience that this is definitely my favorite at least out of strings and percussion.  I use to play the guitar but never really got into it. But when I started playing the drums, that was what I knew I was going to play for a while. I think I've been playing for around four years. But I can say I've been interested in playing stand up bass...

String I think because it sounds very nice. Also I used to play the violin when I was but a wee colt. Thats also why I like Octavia.

I love string instruments. So many different instruments to make so many different sounds. +1 on the mandolin! If played well, they're beautiful. Of course the guitar needs no introduction. However there will always be soft spot in my heart for brass instruments. Playing the tuba and sousaphone in school was so much fun. People think its an easy instrument to play, and it is for the most part. Until you get a series of eighth note runs and your keys have to travel an inch or more to change pitch.

I voted string. A lot of my favorite genres of music, such as technical death metal, symphonic metal, and classical, all involve different kinds of stringed instruments.

I love all kinds of instruments, though. I love it when songs are able to use multiple different kinds of instruments together to complement each other musically. For example, Nightwish, a symphonic metal band, does an excellent job of this not only on the metal end of things, but in combining it with symphonic music as well.

Key word: seems to be more limited.

Winds are very versatile, in fact the ability to make them work in genres I don't normally listen to has made me expand to some genres I would have never seen myself listening to. Never underestimate the winds! =(

Oh I am very aware of this. I don't think of any instrument group as truly limited, but for me strings have always been the most diverse and adaptable.
