Is watching MLP classified as hipster?

Lil' Lovebug

While talking to my father, being hipster was brought up. He subsequently started listing reasons as to how I'm a hipster, and me watching MLP was one of them. So, that begs the question: I watching MLP hipster, or is it mainstream? Was it ever hipster? (Probably) What are your guy's thoughts?

Uhg! I hate the term 'Hipster' It was never Hipster unless you literally put it across saying, "Everything else is too mainstream! I like this because it's not" (Which it is quite mainstream now)

No-one is a hipster for simply liking things they honestly like. A hipster is someone who basically just goes left when everyone else goes right.

I would say liking My Little Pony doesn't make you a hipster. We aren't liking Ponies because it isn't "mainsteam" we are liking them because we honestly do enjoy the show and the fandom.

I highly doubt it, it may no be a 100% mainstream fandom but everyone at least knows about us and the show at this point. I'd say the Little Per Shop fandom would be closer because even WITHIN the brony fandom where it kinda spawned out of it's rare to find a member even though they're there.

I guess you could be a hipster, but watching MLP does not make you a hipster. MLP is definitely can be a hipster thing to watch, everyone has heard of it, chances are if you are on the forums you are more then just a hipster fan. I don't watch MLP for the sole purpose of being different, in fact, i became part of the fandom because their were people like me, and i became a brony because i truly enjoy watching the show.

Ignore every single person using the word "hipster" in a serious manner. That word has been beaten down to death, to the point where it has lost it's meaning. 99% of the people using it, don't really know what it actually means

No, because if you say it's hipster it automatically isn't.

I don't like a lot of things most people like, so I guess you could call me a hipster, but I think its kind of dumb. xD Hipster people usually purposely don't like things most people like.

It is if you make it. I think MLP is already decently mainstream when it comes to the realm of "fandoms." Though, I think the term really needs to be dropped. It seems like anything can be "hipster" these days.

no...just no, watching MLP does not make you a hipster nor is it mainstream. Most of us all watch MLP because it is a fascinating show with great characters who we can relate to (mostly) and good animation style close to that of the Powerpuff girls (I loved that show growing up) and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends (also a good show) so by no means are you a ''hipster'' for watching MLP. it infuriates me to no end when people including some of my friends classify me as a hipster for watching MLP.

While a very small minority of those who watch MLP may do so on account of hipster motivations (i.e. they already are or behave like hipsters, and for them watching MLP at an adult age, being ironic, falls into a category of hipster behavior), bronies watching it in general is NOT automatically hipster.  People of all ages watch it for a variety of reasons, and hipster motivations are just one of the many reasons that people of adult ages watch it (and again, not too many people actually do seem to watch it on account of hipster motivations, since not that many people in general are hipsters).

As for myself personally, no, I've never considered watching MLP to be hipsterish nor have I ever watched it in some purposeful attempt to be ironic or a hipster.  What draws me is the high quality, the great fandom community, and the sense of nostalgia I get whenever I watch it.

Maybe, MAYBE the intent of a very small amount of people is the 'hipster' notion, but really, I am not fond of that term at all. I don't classify it as that because the show is fantastic, so if someone watches it and enjoys it, it is not hard to imagine that it is a legit enjoyment and not a 'hipster' inspired joy. If that exists that is.

It seems the term hipster is used to degrade someone for enjoying something that isn't very popular and I do not like that, it is pointless.

Not in general, although people who watch it out of irony could be to some extent. I don't consider myself a hipster, but I originally embraced the show out of irony and that eventually led to me building a real appreciation for it.

Well, no, not really, I think.

A hipster usually chooses something unpopular and says everything else is too mainstream, and honestly...it's annoying.

It's...just...annoying.

But...this right here is adorable, don't even deny it:

Watching MLP doesn't make you a hipster, far from it. Though at the same time I wouldn't call it mainstream either. It's just kinda in the middle

I dont think so.... why would you be a hipster for being involved with something you like?

I think you're only a hipster and MLP is too minestream if you make it.

Perhaps some people watch it to be hipster.  Maybe they think it will make them so.  In my opinion, it doesn't.  MLP isn't mainstream or hipster.  It's just one of those things in the middle.

Most people watch it because they genuinely like it.  And I certainly wouldn't waste my time watching a show just because I want to have a silly label.

Well if you were to look up hipster in the dictionary then yes; watching mlp is hipster.

Then again, if you were to look up hipster in the Dictionary then technically, being hipster is mainstream.

So watching MLP is mainstream.

Hell, I don't know. The word "hipster" doesn't mean anything to me. I watch MLP because I like it.  ;)

It's not like something has to be non-mainstream for me to like it. I'm into some obscure bands and shows that are cult favorites, but I also eat at McDonald's and watch football. Life should be about what you enjoy, not who you're trying to impress.

Psh, we're so totally hipster! Watch as I put on my so-not-mainstream hipster glasses! See how hipster this is?! We are the most hipstery hipster hipsters on the planet. We make all other hipster look like mainstream fools. That's how hipster we are. Boom.

Lol, but really, the word 'hipster' itself is mainstream, making one heck if a contradiction. I don't watch the show cause it makes me different, I watch it cause I love it!

This thread appears to be related to the My Little Pony franchise and/or the Bronydom in general. Thus, it has been sentenced to Sugarcube Corner.
